  • Many people don't realize that the White House is a unit of the U.S. National Park System. But in many ways, the White House's history, symbolism, and cultural significance make it a perfect candidate for inclusion in the National Park System.
In this video, I explain the reasons why the White House is a National Park. Starting with a brief history of the White House, I then discuss the general criteria for how places become National Parks, before moving onto the criteria for the White House and President's Park specifically.
The White House is such a unique and interesting part of the National Park System given the multitude of functions it serves. On one hand, it's the heart of the United States Executive Branch, but on the other, the White House Grounds are a vital recreation area in Washington D.C. These juxtapositions in many ways justify its inclusion to the National Park System, as they reflect the diversity of experiences and viewpoints of the American people themselves.
I had a great time researching this episode and I hope you'll enjoy Why the White House is a National Park!

The AlGoreRythm recently tossed this kid at me. He is good with the technology and this grumpy old fart is learning things. i have to remind myself not to be harsh with him for not having an old man's perspective !:-)

Great video! I realize I’m very late to commenting but I think it would be interesting if you did a video on an overview of the NPS units and sites in DC, as there are tons. A lot of standard city parks and even traffic circles are under NPS jurisdiction in DC. Love your channel!

That is a topic I really want to cover! I actually just got back from DC (long layover) and got some great footage. I need to return to film more of the "bits and pieces" parks scattered throughout the city, but yeah, that's a story I'll be telling for sure. Thanks for watching!!

Does this mean Joe Biden is homeless, since he lives in a park?

Thank you for saying there's been 45 (as of this video) presidents rather than 46. It's always annoyed me that Grover Cleveland tends to get counted twice. He served two non-consecutive terms, but he wasn't 2 different people.
