I love it how Bioware finally put more character development into Shepard on an emotional scale, it really shows that Shepard is under a massive amount of stress, plus the PTSD of being blown up in ME2, then having the fate of the galaxy rest on his hands in ME3, because deep down, he knew he was fighting a losing battle, even if he said he was hopeful.

Shepard's efforts are admirable, but he's only one guy. his crew is only one crew, and they found out about the coming invasion too late, and with too little proof to convince anyone to do anything about it. Even the delusional lose hope eventually, and Shepard knew EXACTLY what he/she would be up against.
      -
The entire series first hints at, then tells you, and then finally slams it like a jackhammer with each game the whole way: you CANNOT win against the Reapers as a whole without major interference from a previous cycle and knowing what's coming CENTURIES before the next cycle begins so that you have time to prepare. Make your alliances, gather your forces, summon your greatest heroes....there are simply too many of them, they're simply too advanced, and simply have too much experience fighting civilization after civilization.

@@pawe1721 in retrospect, I was explaining this to my best friend the other day. -- shepard literally had 16(?) hours to dream after the vision he received from the beacon on eden prime. it doesnt mean the vision was a dream because we know it wasnt, but the council does refute his claims, calling it a "dream". the entire game is intertwined with shepard having visions. having it in mass effect 3 wasnt an afterthought. just a progression, from visions to processing loss. its a quirk. a possible 6th sense that they could have made into one of shepards abilities. but they did not because its cliche

@@mikespam8271 for me control is pretty much the best option, even if Shepard didn't want it at the beginning, but look at it like that: red ending destroys Reapers but also Geth and EDI what you don't want, but Shepard survives. Synthesis lets everyone, apart from Shepard survive, but you play god and change the genome of organics and you give the synthetics free will, is playing god something Shepard would do? Okay, it might be the best solution listening to the Catalyst, but this way you're doing pretty much the same thing Salarians did with the Krogan, you give them technology and opportunities they're probably not ready for yet. And with control, Shepard lives as the Guardian and a legend, Reapers now help rebuilding what they destroyed and probably even make it better, and the one that controls them is Shepard, so the one who is totally capable of doing this not like the Illusive Man who sacrificed his mind on his way to unlimited power and infinite control

+Rasin Bran If it were indoctrination, Shepard wouldn't be holding strong to his/her belief that the Reapers deserve to be destroyed, especially during conversations with The Illusive Man. Think about it. When you are indoctrinated, you lose the ability to think for yourself and you don't realize it, you become a a puppet who trusts in the beliefs of the Reapers without question, you trust in them and what they believe in. What Shepard actually is going through is having his/her naturally strong willed nature being slowly eaten away by his/her doubts and fears based on the knowledge that not everyone will live to see a Reaper free Milky Way galaxy, no matter how hard he/she tries, no matter what choices he/she makes.

Personally, I'd have preferred the dream sequences to be bits of your Shepard's pre-ME1 past and psych profile depending on what you chose:
    Examples:
Spacer - Chasing the child down a corridor on a ship
Colonist - Running from Batarian slavers on the destroyed colony
Earthborn - Running thu a run-down street after the child
War Hero - holding off Batarian pirates until the dream ends.
Sole Survivor - Running from a Thesher Maw as soldiers die
Ruthless - Murdering every Batarian you see

zanebrunes45 I think that’s a very valid reason why during the Citadel DLC Shepard gets visibly upset and even angry with their clone. They’re trying to throw away, discard, destroy the very family that Shepard has found. The one thing that is holding him/her together and keeping their humanity and by extension, sanity in check.
Legion: We will do the same for Normandy.
      Liara: You mean Normandy’s Crew.

I dunno man. The scenes where ur running through a burning forest chasing the kid with ghosts around you were really good. The reason they chose that to be his nightmare is because Shepard felt responsible for the childs death. Just like he feels responsible for everyones death. In one of the nightmares you hear the ppl that died say things, like Mordin, and Legion, and Kelly Chambers for me since they all died for me. Say what u want but these scenes perfectly brought out my emotions.

The first time I saw the dream, I didn't get it. The second time, I started to suspect. When we saved the Krogan and she dreamed again, I knew. It was all starting to take its toll on her mind, (and already did once) body, and heart. War always does; no hero is invincible. Not even Shepard.

The only good thing about the dream sequences were that you vaguely heard the last words of your fallen crew members echo in the background.

    • @Ramathustra
      @Ramathustra Před 9 lety +41

I believe the child was was important to Shepard as by watching his dead it became somewhat of a symbol of Earth he was trying to save. But we all lived the game in different ways, so yes, some of us will be satisfied with the solution, some of us didn't.And Ashley as the Catalyst? No, thanks. But were we all happy with the game overall? Probably yes (if we can forget the original endings). I sure was!

Also the reason I think the dreams should be based on Shepard's past history because it fleshes them out more.
In the 1st dream, you could have the past history (i.e. the horrors of surviving Mindoir or Akuze etc.) and in the 2nd, you could have those who have more recently died partly because of Shepard's choices, like Ashley/Kaiden, Wrex, Mordin and/or Legion. There are so many variables, which would've made it interesting.
They should've made those that died actually appear in the dreams.

I've read quite a lot of of the ME universe fanfic, comments theories that Shepard was indoctrinated by Harbinger and the reason for those dreams that he had where part of Harbinger's plan to break Shepard's will to fight, that the second Shepard was hurt by the Reaper shooting at him he all imagined or (dreamed) of the final scene in the citadel while he was uncouncious when the beam attack was lauched. Those choices that where given to him when he reached the citadel where to fool him, that he was in the reapers subcouncious level. If he chose synthesis ot control end, game over only destroying them is the option that i see. I will post now a quite good fanfic story that made me think a lot. www.fanfiction.net/s/8035991/1/Mass-Effect-3-Aftermath And for the last i recommend reading it with some good Mass Effect soundtracks Cheers!

Shepard having doubts they can pull this off, Shepard is only human even the bravest people can have doubts mainly when its this big.

To be quite honest I think the theory is true but Bioware never intended to reveal it immediately after release which is why the original cut was so short because it wasn't meant to even be real. But then the fan reaction to the ending was so bad that they had to do something, so they just added to the hallucination. I guess we won't ever really know for sure until ME4. "lots of speculation for everyone" they said...

That's because it is :D Well, almost, it uses the same chords but it just varied the rhythm of the notes in the melody. If you listen to 'An End Once and for All' that is another variation of 'Leaving Earth', same chord progressions and everything. One of the things ME does very well is using motifs and reccuring themes in it's music, it's fun to listen to them.

Every Zelda game is a top of the line gaming experience that few other games can compare to. Just because they dont run in a sequence of 1, 2, 3, 4, like Halo, does not diminish the amount of fun you have while playing it. If anything games like Halo and Mass Effect get old the longer the series because of similar gameplay where Zelda constantly has unique and new ways to play like using the Wii controls to swing your sword. The broken sequence of events makes it easier to bring in new ideas.

Well, it was just a quick idea really. I agree they brought emotions in me, too. It's probably because I kept Mordin and Kelly alive, hence why I just hear one voice or two (i.e. Legion) that I felt something was missing. I wanted to save as many people as I could in all three games since my first Shepard was a Colonist who had lost their family at a young age.

When you try to survive in the station, and after many waves of ennemies there's a large beam coming from the Reapers Artefact, Shepard falls down, and he sees Doctor Kenson differently (with some weird shining eyes), anyway she says : That they need Shepard alive. She was indoctrinated, leaving Shepard alive was a part of the plan of the Reapers. Finally i agree with 1vaultdweller, the indoctrination process takes end in the final scene of Mass effect 3, if you choose Synthesis or Control, you

Benezia was influenced because she was inside Sovereing remember in Mass Effect 1 ? She said that Sovereign had some kind of influence on the people who were aboard Sovereign. But Shepard never got inside a Reaper Ship, there's only one exception, it was an abandonned Reaper ship on Mass Effect 2, but that one was completely unfoctionnal. Let's say that the indoctrination process started in the Arrival DLC...

Shepard keeps thinking back to that boy because she regrets not being able to save him, especially since that Reaper shot that transport right before her very eyes. Also, I think the boy is representative of all of the people who have died.
In my playthrough, the voices you hear in the dream are of people who have died; if you don't have subtitles on, it's really hard to make out what they're are saying.

  • @ParagonRenegade
    @ParagonRenegade Před 11 lety

I always choose the renegade responses to the Catalyst, so yes, I think it's lying/withholding information.
The thing is, if Shepard was "only starting" to get indoctrinated until the ending, where he was presumably rapidly indoctrinated, then he would become a husk basically. TIM and Saren were high-functioning victims, and they require months or years of constant exposure. Shepard was not, obviously, since he did not further the Reaper's goals.

Shepard's goal throughout the series is to stop Reapers, whether if YOUR Shep aims to save as many people she can or not is YOUR choice to play as either PARAGON or RENEGADE; which are the main two conflicting themes centered as the engine of ME's narrative. That said, it makes zero sense for EVERY Shep to regret not trying to save everyone, because the renegade Shepard have done much worse to galaxy already by that point. Plus, ME never had a pro-earth, a humancentric narrative.

    Nononononononononononono.
Leaving Earth is the name of the track that plays in ME3 when you...leave Earth. The 800% slower bit is referencing a series of videos that use some program (I think the usual is PaulStretch in Audacity) to slow down a song to the point of it sounding nothing like the original. For a while you could type in any pop song and "800% slower" after it and you'd get a video. I was just saying that I think the composers used a similar process to those videos.

Arrival isn't mandatory to import into ME3, so that doesn't make any sense for someone who has a Shepard who didn't partake in the Alpha Relay thing. So it either happened in ME1 or 3, as ME2 only has a single significant reaper encounter (The derelict)
