Students who had not joined the free speech movement were not seen as idiots or traitors, but as people that needed to be convinced. Of course there was some violence around these protests and at one point there were 4 bombings a day by domestic terror groups like The Weather Underground. Today’s students have succeeded in amplifying the Palestinian cause, but at the cost of civility. Violence, wearing keffiyeh scarfs and anti-Semitic slurs won't win anyone to your cause but other radical anti-Semites.
The president is correct you can protest but you cannot have violence and you cannot block the streets or bridges so that people can’t get to work or do their daily activities. There is a place to protest peacefully and we encourage that always
