2018 elections are the "mid term" elections in the States. In Congress the House Members serves 2 year terms( Senators serve for 6 years). So when a President goes into his/her(theoretically) 2nd year as President, the House can be flipped either Republican or Democrat depending on how well the President's Party has done in the first couple years of their term.

The electoral college balances the power of votes between heavily populated areas and sparsely populated areas. Without it, California and New York City would select every president.

Dave = I think you are referring to the popular vote. The electoral college is in place to ensure that the whole country has a vote. The thing a lot of people seem to forget is that the electoral college gave us President Kennedy (who lost the popular vote to Nixon). So, when people get salty about their candidate not winning, they try to blame the electoral college, but it is the electoral college that attempts to make things fair and representative. Otherwise, only the major cities votes would matter, (and most of the major cities are very liberally dominated) due to their population size. America is a democratic republic, not a democracy. Our founding fathers definitely got a lot of things wrong, but they did attempt to look forward and keep things relatively fair. 🤷🏽♀️
The best I can tell they don't even teach civics in high school anymore so that the young have a better understanding of why the electoral college is so great. 😑
