    Why are all the fish appear to be keepers 27” and up ? We were fishing bay of fundy and caught quite a few under sized fish and only one 30 “ between 6 guys in three boats . What is the secret to getting bigger fish . We were using 4oz weights and no. 6/0 hook . Squid heads , fresh mackerel, and fresh gasperough , or the locals call them kayaks.

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  Před 3 lety +1

      Quite a few things come into play for Striped Bass size in saltwater. Stripers tend to swim in like sizes. Once you start catching numerous 20” fish you will most likely see only fish around that same size. We hear never leave fish to find fish, but I often do just that. In the US migratory fish are often much larger so that’s another thing to take into account. Are you catching smaller resident fish that aren’t feeling the urge to migrate and spawn? If so, a much larger fish will be rare in That case as well.

    • @michaellevy3179
      @michaellevy3179 Před 3 lety

      @@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS i believe the fish are resident fish heading to the river waters to spawn . This was my first time fishing strippers and i think i may be hooked . I was a big Atlantic salmon fly fisherman but as you probably know the returning salmon are becoming few and far between around the east coast of Nova Scotia . So this may be the next fishing venture for me .

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  Před 4 lety +2

      I would start out with bloodworms. The guys at the bait shop will hook you up with the right hooks and stuff. They are pretty good in the North East. Try to fish near a river mouth on the out going tide. 👍👍

      I almost Always use a swivel. They will swim in circles and make a mess. You can get away without a swivel if you are constantly monitoring the bait, like pitching live baits to Snook or Tarpon- any situation where you’re holding the rod and casting and changing baits often. If it just sits in the rod holder for long periods of time you should used a swivel.

      Hey Tony, they are the new Aftco anhydrous rain gear. I was lucky enough to help test this new gear out for a year or so before they went into production. We beat the daylights out of most of our stuff and Aftco actually tweaked the design based on some of our feedback. I was very impressed with that. It seems that a lot of companies wouldn't make any changes after they hit the old "price point", but Aftco made some real improvements to get it perfect. It's a super lightweight super dry suit. They have these "cord locks" all over the suit that are awesome. You can really adjust the suit in several places so it fits perfect. This gear has to be the driest breathable gear out there. Thanks for the comment brother!

      Peter Rouse on the bottom with cut bait, this area is big and flat so the current isn’t very strong and the Bait stays on the bottom with no weight. Good question! Thanks.

      Numbers have been dropping every year since before 2011. This past study was pretty depressing. We would keep fish every now and then to bring to the VFW, but we don’t even do that anymore. On our way to another Moratorium if things don’t change. I don’t necessarily think that sport fishermen are to blame, but I think we can help by turning them all loose until things change.

    I'm confused to why is your leader and main line the same test.
    Why not just go straight through from the reel??
    Isn't the leader supposed to be lighter test just in case you need to break off??

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  Před 7 lety +1

      Studio8 because the bait spins when you reel it in and also slowly turns in the current. Even though there isn't much current here, the baits do tumble on the bottom a bit. We also add weight when needed. We can do that quickly by snapping a slip sinker above the swivel when it's needed. Thanks for the comment

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  Před 7 lety +1

      Studio8 when we do use a different lb test for the leader we go heavier than the main line. We avoid weights and heavier leaders whenever we can get away with it. The heavy leader is great for big Stripers with sharp gill plates and we do go heavier quite a bit. Bigger fish usually pull drag and come right up to the surface so the line will pass over the gill plates several times due to the shallow angle to the fish on the surface. Believe it or not, the fish were quite finicky on this day. They wouldn't touch big baits, and also stayed away from the 50lb leaders we started with.

      that was a great answer ,we use heavier leaders ,but i didnt know why. It also explains how they break you off so easily on lighter test. Yes sir!! It doesn’t take much to attract fish when there is current. A hump like this can be littered with good fish. In freshwater you might need ALOT of structure, but not as much in the salt. 👍👍

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  Před 7 lety +2

      Ryan Mclaughlin great question. In most cases I set the drag to be 3/4 of what the fighting drag will be so we can get the rod out of the holder quick to set the hook. (They are harder to get out when fish puts pressure on the rod) HOWEVER, when using circle hooks I leave it at full fighting drag. If the drag isn't paying out at the strike we wind the reel hard without taking it out of the rod holder to sink the Circle hook before picking up the rod. Thanks for the comment!

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  Před 5 lety

      Thomas Wild I have always preferred evenings pretty much everywhere. If there is no tide, I go no weight. From there I go as light as I can get away with. A simple 5/0-7/0 circle hook with cut and whole Bunker would be where I would start. Clams and and bloodworms will do well too, but you will possibly catch lots of smaller fish that way. Grip it and rip it Brother. Try a bunch of stuff and see what sticks. 😁.

    Thanks for posting, we do something similar in SOCAL, live deans nose hook, slow trolled with fluoro and swivel or even straight line, using a bait runner so when they pick it up they can run and take line. Circle hooks, can't beat the technique.

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  Před 7 lety +1

      dzoan duong find areas where the channel runs close to the bank. You don't necessarily need to cast all the way to the channel, but you have greater chances when fishing the shallow water NEAR the deep water of the channel. Use larger spinning reels with 10-12" surf cast rods. 50-80lb Stealth braid. 20-40lb mono leaders. I like to cast eels because they stay on the hook best when casting hard. Hook in the tail.
