Today Bruce McCurdy and David Staples dig into Edmonton's free agent mania, with the need for new contracts for Leon Draisaitl, Evan Bouchard, Mattias Janmark, Adam Henrique, Connor Brown, Vincent Desharnais and others. Wiill they take Stanley Cup discounts to stay?
Great job. Still depressed over game 7, why couldn't we win that last coin flip, would of been one for the ages. Will never get over it, oh well life goes on.
It does suck. At least we got to be part of a great ride. That was so much better than losing in the 1st or 2nd round
Ya it sucks, but Just think of all the years this day, draft day was basically all we had to be hopeful about. I’ll take watching 25 wild games in 63 days and a game 7 SC loss over that nonsense. Our future has been now for awhile now & will continue to be for awhile yet!
@@kwaty i agree 100%. Im an overly obsessed fan, i just want to see one more stanley cup and i wouldn't care for the next 15 years. Its just so hard to get there again. Its so emotional consuming. I know its over and no point complaining but that second goal just CAN"T happen. It would of been a 1-1 game going into the 3rd, nobody talks about it. Skinner is young and had a good but not great playoff which was expected. I didnt't even watch the 3rd i was just pacing around which i know is not healthy or no way to enjoy a game
@@nenochukich7504 At the end of the day, with all our fire power, We scored 1 goal in 60 min. That was never gonna get it done! But this team will have more chances! Now injuries and randomness are what there are, but one year everything will fall just the right way. It’s coming! Just gotta learn to enjoy the ride! All the disappointment will make it more worth it!
@@Greenfrom3 NOPE! Your statement is only true financially. Everything they did, including the 3 game comeback, was wiped from history with the AWFUL performance in game 6/7 from McPotter and Leon. When was the last game 7 in the NHL, does anyone remember the comeback from the losing team? In the biggest games in their career, they both shit the bed. ZERO points for McPotter in both games was the death nail. The loss is solely on the backs of the top 2 players. Leon, injured or not, had one good period in the final series and the media thought it was the second coming of Christ. 3rd line was the best line in the finals which speaks volumes. Here is what needs to change, in my opinion. We will never win a cup with Nurse/Ceci. They both make momentum killing mistakes. Leon should be traded and his cap space used on some top level D. We can't get rid of Nurse because no team would take him without the Oil retaining 50% of his contract. Nurse is, at best, a 3rd pair D man. Get rid of Ceci and Perry. Kane also needs to go. Sign Brown and Yanny as fast as you can. Henrique should be extended but I doubt he will stay. they are close but close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. I watched EVERY game the Oilers played in the playoffs and this team needs to move away from some of these players. Time for a change. We can't run in back.

The fans deserve a gem of general manager. I am not sure who that will be? This can go well but humility is required they need people who can really evaluate and get value where needed!
I think that paying Desharnais a five contract would be a mistake.
Sam O'Reilly is exactly the player type the Oilers need! What McLeod shoulda been (and maybe still can become??). And a right shot, can play C, hope he develops quickly to help this core. With some work with Pelletier, he should be fine.

Regarding losing talent, the Oilers lost Coffey and Gretzky and still won Cups, until they were completely ripped apart after 1990. If Chicago wins 4 or 5 cups, the Oilers win 7 or 8.
Some might take a small discount, but no one is going to leave millions on the table to play here. And Holland was a great Gm for the Oilers. Some Oilers fans don't seem to know when they have it good all to often.
He almost won a cup here. Would his ability be in question if they won it?

It's a shame we have to debate and dither over how much Desharnais could be worth, and where he sits between 1 and 2 million. The big albatross around our necks is the fact that Nurse is overpaid by $5 or 6 million/yr. If some players are open to taking a discount to be on a Stanley Cup team, why doesn't Nurse step up and forgo 5 million of his salary, accept and acknowledge that he's worth 4 million, and then we can make 750,000 of those savings available to Desharnais. Obviously the world doesn't work that way but in an Ideal World... and some of those funds should be put towards signing Bouchard and Ekholm as well. Neither of those guys should be paid less than Nurse. Nurse's deal makes life very difficult for the next GM.
In other news Florida is shopping Ekblad for the same reason, NYR are looking to trade Trouba who has 2 more years at $8 million then there is Chicago who pays Seth Jones $9.5 million per year for him. See a pattern? All of these defensemen were signed around the same time. 3 of them are rhd & Darnell Nurse is a lhd. We all know that rhd are a rare & valuable commodity. So would one of those players being swapped for Darnell Nurse make sense to you? I'm not convinced Bouchard is a true 1st pairing defensemen because of his lack of an all round game, he seems one dimensional imo.
What about the difference in winning and losing when it is a chicken wing goal given up by one goalie and not the other? Bad goal!
I think 7.5 is fair. Some of those contracts were results of being cornered by the market. When you need a position player you have to take one of the best that’s available. He’s leaving the team in pretty good shape
We need someone that can fight. We needed someone to protect McD and Drai. Other teams had free reign on those 2 will zero consequences. Step it up! This is unacceptable. Our 2 stars we injured immensely and ultimately costed up the cup

Knowblach made the same mistake every other coach for the oilers, relying on McDavid/Drai , overplayed and both were at 75% at best, that’s when you need the other nine to chip in and take more shifts, what you said was true, ✅, as upset as some fans may feel

I like Vinney, but considering his path to the NHL and his Age this is his chance for a payday and I think he should go wherever pays him the most and gives him the longest term. Careers are short as it is, and he made the NHL so late so his is going to be shorter than most.
I think Holland did a good job. He put together a team that had a real shot at winning it all, it just didn't work out that way, that's hockey there's luck involved and Dri/Mcd/Kane where either hurt in the end and not producing like they can or not able to play at all. This is significant and Holland can't prevent any of that
that penalty Warren took in game 7 was bad. Florida didnt score on the PP but did score a few seconds later.

I would sure like to know when 29 was injured. No doubt he was injured just never seen a hit in the Canuckleheads series that did it.
People forget, it was so hard to get a top pairing D, we had to overpay for Nurse, if we let him walk WHO was going to fill that spot? Landscape was what it was, same with Jack C, people would have burnt the city down if we didn't sign a goalie, at that point it was him or Kuemper and neither were great, we did what we could. Kassian's signing he was a fan favorite, he had 1 amazing playoffs who would know he would fall off a cliff, at the time all these signings were fine, maybe we would have liked nurse at 7.5-8 mill but again that's all retrospectively. Holland gets a B+. People forget Edmonton isn't every players cup of tea and we couldn't just get anything for nothing. Easy to look at what Vegas did or Florida or the Stars and say WHY COULDN'T WE? Because .... we're Edmonton ....
Ceci is a very serviceable dman at his cap hit.
It's a crapshoot for any players to repeat a spectacular performance. That being said, we saw a near record penalty kill throughout the playoffs. I don't know about Ceci or Foegele but you may want to consider keeping the duo of Brown and Janmark as a pair for their spectacular performance on the penalty kill and their competent five on five play. Perhaps they can be convinced to sign a couple years each at 1.5 or 1.75 million to take another couple shots at a Stanley Cup ring. These guys are out of your top 12 but I'd argue the Oilers best line for much of the final, factoring in their ice time, was actually the Oilers third line. Henrique may not figure in the Oilers' future but Brownmark is a combination the Oilers should keep if at all possible, even to a combined amount of 3.3 million.
I can’t believe I’m saying this , but letting Holland go and Jackson or a new GM is going to be a disaster, you made a great point that Holland has connections from the last 25 years, Jackson or new GM does not have, it’s going to be interesting to see how many players leave for more money elsewhere, you’re asking a lot for a player to take a Discount, just to play in Edmonton, we will see what unfolds, you are by the far best Oilers coverage, ✅🥅🏒

Better then bringing in a new person, who doesn’t know the team and doesn’t have the contacts or communication that holland has with other GM, I’m not saying he was perfect, (Campbell) but let’s not forget, there wasn’t many other goalies available besides Campbell, but he did get Edmonton Hyman (cheap) , Ekholm, Brown (who was stellar in playoffs), Henrique, Kane, Perry (was a good choice and cheap for playoffs, 4th liner at best) stuck with Skinner when the whole province was screaming 😱 for a new goalie, and now with Pickard signed, guess what, no new goalie coming, Skinner is the guy now, Holland at least deserved one more year, I wonder had Edmonton won game 7, if Holland will still be there ????????????

Draisaitl taking a discount is laughable. He's been on a discount for the last 4 or 5 years. There is no way he signs for less than 14 million if it's with term. I could see him sign at 13 if it's 3 years or less.
I don't buy Jeff Jackson's excuse for being behind on things...he should have been jogging numbers and creating a general game plan....lawyers

Holland was overrated in Detroit and in Edmonton. Look at the talent he inherited in both cities. There was a good reason why the wings wouldn’t give him the job.
