WEEKLY VLOG #37: Prepping For and Riding Out Hurricane Ian near Tampa & Flooding in Arcadia!

  • Well, our vacation plans were cut short by the need to prep for Hurricane Ian. Since we live in the Tampa area, early in the week we thought Hurricane Ian was headed straight for us. But as the day arrived, Hurricane Ian made landfall further south. We were mostly spared here in Tampa, aside from so heavy winds and hurricane-force wind gusts. However, my parents' back in my hometown of Arcadia had a much worse time. I share our experience prepping for and riding out Hurricane Ian.

    Mother Nature can be scary! I’m glad that everyone is safe, but I feel so bad for your parents! I hope they get their power back, and that you’ll be able to get to them soon!

    I am watching this with our new rescue dog Oliver! 72 pounds of love, bet you didn't see that coming, that I would have a new dog 3 weeks after coming home :) So glad you guys are ok, really seems like a miracle how it all went down for you. It was so tough to watch what was happening for your parents, though. So so scary, but very glad that they are ok!

      Oliver!!! Welcome to the fam!!! I need to see pictures! So glad they're okay - it was tough knowing what they were going through and just hoping everything would be okay.

      You know all too well what it's like right now! I know you can empathize far too well. I truly thought that shed was going to lose its roof so early on! Can't believe it made it!!

      Still no power for my parents yet! They're looking at a return date of October 9th, according to the power company. At least the weather has been nice!

    Omg Ian was terrible, I am in SW Florida, my family lives in cape coral, I work with my mom on Saturdays on Sanibel and the causeway was breached in 5 places. We will need to replace our roof thankfully that is it all and we have no leaks. I feel like it was sitting on us for 10 hours. We have a patio like yours and I was watching out our window (because we don't have shutters, we will be getting them soon) and I prayed it didn't get ripped off because the wind was coming in from the back of our house it was terrifying

    • @SandySanders81
      @SandySanders81 Před rokem +1

      I was having PTSD from Irma, we were with out electric for close to a month, thankfully we got electric back Sunday.

    • @DiscoLiz
      @DiscoLiz  Před rokem

      Oh my goodness, yes! The Sanibel causeway is insane. So, so sad for Sanibel and all the other areas on the coast. It really did just park there and slam the coast for hours and hours. After going through Hurricane Charley, storm shutters were a must for us. Our Tampa house came with them, but I would have insisting on getting them installed otherwise. It just gives so much more peace of mind. So glad you’re okay and only suffered minimal damage! 🙌🏻🙌🏻

    • @SandySanders81
      @SandySanders81 Před rokem +1

      That's the worst part, no water being on a well, no power no water... I took cold bucket baths every night. Everyone would tell me ohh just to take a cold shower after Irma... They didn't understand the well needs power to run. Glad everyone is safe! I was definitely thinking of your parents ♥️

    Glad you and your family are okay. I live in Fort Myers and Ian was so slow it was 24 hours of pure stress. I hope things are getting more normal for your family in Acardia as they are around here. I made my dog a sod pool for peeing during Irma and did not want to pee in it. I just had him pee in the bathtub this time around, my dog is only 10 pounds though.

      Oh man, I'm so sorry for everyone in Fort Myers! It looked absolutely brutal there, and Fort Myers Beach looks like it was a warzone now. It's so terrible! Hope you're doing okay and didn't suffer damage at your house!

  • @sciencelifedisneylove5108

    I knew you guys were okay because we had talked about it in the comments on an earlier video but it was still really stressful watching this. Part of me wonders if Colby’s issue with going outside when it’s wet stems from Harvey because I know you found him right around Harvey but I can’t remember how much he was outside for that. Still glad everything was okay but wow that flooding for Arcadia was insane.

    • @DiscoLiz
      @DiscoLiz  Před rokem

      It was a wild week, for sure. We found Colby about two weeks before Harvey, but I wonder if the Texas storms and crazy rain we used to get made him afraid of rain in general. It's very likely! The storms there were something else. We get wild lightning here, but not anything like the rain in Houston.

    I am SO bummed. My wife's birthday was last week & we had a trip booked to Universal for Halloween Horror Nights (it would have been our 1st time going) & had to cancel because of the hurricane; the two days we were going to be at HHN were the two days the park was closed...

    Not many are prepared for the worse of natures abuse.
    There are various models of "solar Generators", a company called BLUETTI makes a few. This model is very similar to mine.
    BLUETTI AC200P Portable Power Station, 2000Wh LiFePO4 Battery Backup w/ 6 2000W AC Outlets (4800W Peak), Solar Generator for Outdoor Camping, RV Travel, Home Use (Solar Panels Optional)
    when the lights go out, this will feed your lights and / or keep the frig running
    It can be charged with solar panels, other than running fans for temperature control, it can help keep some normalcy in your life during a storm intervention like this.
    I am not advertising this unit, I only own one which in non storm times I use to keep the computers power failure free.
    There are other brands that can do the job for you...................
    Just a thought as you like to flirt with hurricanes.
