I will lose my respect for ANY Scotman should Scotland vote NO for its independence - I have NEVER met ANYONE who did not want to be Independent and to see an entire country say NO to become Independent will earn my disrespect for them. I mean, one nation after another from Asia,Europe,America have FOUGHT and sacrificed lives for Independence - thats how precious Independence is - and yet Scotland will say NO?
On a smaller scale, from the day we are born,we dream of the day we shall become Indpendent of our parents and families. Independence is just a NATURAL thing which is why its considered to be a crime against humanity to deny ANYONE or nation of their Independence. By the way, that will be a precedence by itself - the first time - at least that I know of - where a country decides against becoming Independent and choses to remain second class to another country

England is a neo liberal monarchy. Any monarchical system in structure, Character, or ideology has to be resisted - be it in England, or Pakistan, or some tribe in Africa. You can't argue against slavery in the West by saying there is also slavery in Africa. Any abolishment of oppressive system anywhere is a step forward. That's how progress happens. We would never ever have had the freedoms (demands constant safeguard, vigilance, activism, and struggle, because Power never sleeps) that we enjoy if people who came before us and struggled to create space (for us) had bought into any pseudo justification of status quo of their times.

Tariq Ali's words ring hollow. He would love to see Britain broken up, he comes from a back ground where revenge is natural, of course this is because he could never forgive how the British left India and the fact that his people were given Pakistan. Using position and status in the public eye is a boon that he will use to help compound the former masters fall from grace. No matter what he says, Britain, is a land where he can play Judas, lets see him get away with it in Pakistan.

+Suvasish Roy Chowdhury I've heard one other lecture of him on his book about pakistan post colonial bureaucracy, he holds a pretty standard leftist point of view of how the elites and military leadership destroyed the pakistan economy.
Scottish independence had many incentives from a leftist point of view, least of which is to see a divided UK. Your analysis is quite uninformed and stereotypical and holds no water really.

What part is uninformed? He is for the break up the United Kingdom. He holds a just contempt for it and is a leftist sycophant and that is the point.
Writing a book from his academic ivory tower in the UK on Pakistan and publically defaming the Pakistani government in Pakistan is quite different (holding water there).
The git enjoys his freedoms in the UK doesn't he, yet he would like to break it up.
Like to see him commend the break up of Pakistan whilst in Pakistan and given to the various groups, but he won't do that because the Pakistani authorities would imprison him. He is a figure comparable to Judas. He is a wolf in lambs clothing. Besides no one cares what he thinks.

I wasn't talking about the imperialism of the past centuries. Besides the current political scenario in scotland gives another picture. I don't have time for an enlightenment experiment on 'centuries of imperialist history' to 'contemporary international politics'.
I was inclined to engage in a discussion sorrounding the work of Tariq ali's disposition towards Scottish Independence. If you don't care about Tariq's views, then it is pretty 'grand' of you to assume the position of critique. I leave it there.

Give the English and Welsh a vote on whether they want to remain attached to Scotland. That's fair.

Why is Tariq Ali still hear? He’s made a lifetime making a living out of rubbishing the UK.
