Hi, my name is Jorday Rivera and I am an expert in salsa. I own two dance studies in Queens, New York. We are going to be learning a progression of salsa moves, so that we could actually go out, practice, take it to the clubs, take it to a party, and you can show off all the great moves you learned. This is the basic step. And this is the breakdown to the basic step.
Now, we're going to start off with our right foot on one. So, we're going to start with our right foot on one, two, three. We're going to go back, five, six, seven. Forward, two three. Back, back, step. Forward, two three. Back, back, step. Forward, two three. Back, back, step.

This is glorious, been searching for "beginner salsa lessons online" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Miyyan Wenacob Bulldozer - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my neighbour got amazing success with it.

It is good to keep in mind that if you are teaching basic steps, it's best to orient your demonstration by co-ordinating with what the viewer is seeing. In other words, when you instruct to move forward with your right foot, that means that the teacher must move ahead with the left. This will help the beginner orient with his or her right foot, moving as they see you move (the opposite of what you are actually doing).
It's hard enough to learn new steps without having to think about direction -- just follow the direction the teacher facing you is doing. Otherwise, it's a motivating lesson, fun.

Its 3 am why the hell am i watching a salsa tutorial
This is a bit strange, because I started taking salsa classes a few weeks ago, and the basic step we were taught was very different from what's been shown in this video. To be precise, we started with our left foot forward on 1, stepped in place with our right foot on 2, and brought the left foot together with the right on 3. We stepped back with the right foot on 5, in place with the left foot on 6, and brought the right foot back together with the left on 7.
What style am I currently dancing, and what style is being taught in these videos?
***** Yeah, back when I posted this comment I was very new to salsa and I didn't know the distinction between salsa On1 (aka LA style) and salsa On2 (aka NY style/mambo). She's dancing On2 here, which is a very different rhythm (and that's what had me confused). Over time, I've actually come to appreciate and enjoy On2 more than On1, even though I started my salsa journey with On1!

Ella Hill-Cotter I'm glad you said this because I learned only the basic step (total beginner here) from guys who are serious salsa dancers. However lately I've been seeing people do what the woman is doing in this video. So I was confused.
Thank you. Began a few months ago. Took forever to get the concept of skipping step four. Worst was which foot was to be step one. Practiced at home and have become pretty good, but nowhere near your level of course. Why take salsa or bachata? Great for coordination, cardio and socializing. Most importantly though is everyone is always smiling.

For those who are confused, they're doing it correctly. It's just a salsa basic on 2, instead of 1. They step with their right foot on 1 (as the break) so their first step in the actual basic is with the left foot on 2. I believe this is actually Mambo for that reason? Not sure tho

What I liked about this video versus other "learn to dance" videos was that you SHOWED the basic dance step right away, rather than talking so much about what you're about to do. I noticed that when instructors describe the steps they're about to make and what foot to use and this and that, I tend to get lost and focus too much on the mechanics instead of just dancing. The mechanics are ok to pay attention to once you get the feel of it and can then understand what you're doing. I prefer someone to SHOW me right away.

She is teaching New York style salsa, which counts on 2. The first step is a dummy one. Different from LA and several other styles, which (as other commenters have noted) begin with the left step forward for leads.

When I teach I explain that your right foot should be ahead of the left foot so that you are in a position that encourages you to go forward w/ the left foot. I don't ask the feet to be beside each other and then go forward with the left as step one. Rather, your left foot is slightly behind and your right foot is ahead of the left so that when you begin your 1st step is with the left foot ahead of your right. Make sense?
jaasub22 I see that most of your videos indicate what salsa you are dancing. I think if would be helpful to indicate in the video title, when you are dancing on two, and especially when you are showing the follow steps two.

I grew up dancing cha cha cha. It's my country's national dance (you do it in your sleep). And I find that it's really hard to tell the difference betweeen cha cha cha and salsa.
For those on the computer who are saying it was too fast, if you push the spacebar to pause you can push the . and , keys to move forward amd backward one frame at a time respectively. Alternatively you can slow this video down to 1/4 of its duration by going into the settings using the cog and and selecting .25 speed 🙌🙌

You have to start with one step of the left foot then feet together. Then you go backwards with one step of your right foot.

It's confusing to count it as "Forward, 2, 3, back, back, step" --- just say "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6..." to whatever cadence/tempo.
I agree with you - it can be confusing... and since the video is so short - it makes it even more confusing. the best way, in my opinion, is to say the FULL count like you suggested and also mention what you do in the steps (forwards back... etc.)
by the way - it is not 1,2,3,4,5,6- they step on 1-2-3-5-6-7

There really needs to be some difference between male and female. Male (typical lead) is supposed to start on left foot. Videos also get a bit confusing at times for beginners.

Sorry but dance studio dancing is choreography, a true Salsa dancer has the ability to improvise and create as he or she dances.
So why do they do their steps on 234 678 instead of 123 567 (like on every other salsa video)? It's both right. People call this (234 678) ''Mambo'', or "Salsa on 2". The steps are the exaxt same as in "normal" salsa (salsa on 1), but one count later than ususal. So which salsa are you going to dance on the dancefloor? Whichever one you want. Usually it is easier to dance on 1, because the first beat is more emphasized than any other beat, so it is easier to hear. Thus putting your foot forward on one is more intuitive. Having said this, there are loads of songs that emphasize the second beat more. Then you might wanna try to dance salsa on 2. Conclusion: if you think of it, you can do whatever you want as long as the music is 4/4, and around 100BPM. You can even dance salsa on Sweet Home Alabama, its just not as nice as on latin music. Hope this helped some confused people :)
