- ITA Airways surprised the world when, on the eve of the launch of its first services, it shelled out a sizeable €90 million to purchase the brand of its predecessor, Alitalia.
At the time, it was thought that the move was an attempt to prevent the brand from being used elsewhere. In today’s video, let’s examine if there’s anything more to the story.

I've always liked the Alitalia "A" design on the tail section. Simple, iconic and instantly recognisable at any airport. The branding seems to have aged better than thr airline itself. However, I must admit, I'm loving the ITA Airways blue.
i'm italian and i miss alitalia, but i'm happy for this new airlines
I think giving up the Alitalia brand isn’t a clever step. Reputation was never Alitalia‘s problem and rebranding the new company only creates unnecessary costs. Growing the ITA brand to what Alitalia used to be will not only take billions of Euros but also like 50 years of time.
ITA actually wanted to continue operations using the Alitalia brand, but they were not permitted this by the EU. They European Commission sent a letter to the italian government. The letter stated, among other things, that ITA should not retain the Alitalia brand, since the brand is an emblematic indicator of continuity.
I miss Alitalia, I really liked their livery with the "A" on the wings, it was really iconic. ITA's livery just looks like any other airline
I do miss Alitalia, considering its name literally meant “wings of Italy”, names like that are just so special to me.
It was inherently italian in name, but the new one is just "ITA" and the appendage "airways", like, not creative at all.
@@AD_RC exactly, I feel they should’ve bought the brand, reformed it, but keep the name, kinda like AA did with US Airways. It’s a new American Airlines.
more like Al Italia, which means "To Italy"
@@KD-no1tf nope, “to Italy” would be “all’Italia” or “in Italia” or “verso l’Italia” depending on the context. Alitalia is a mix of “Ali”=“wings” and Italia, so it literally would translate to something like Wingsitaly
@@giacomo.salvatori it would’ve made a lot more sense if it came from All’Italia. Wings Italy sounds kinda r etarded😂
I still think Alitalia is a much, much more memorable branding than ITA.
1946 to 2021 to ITA 2021-Present. Yeah probably more memorable…
@@jacrispy90 hahahaha right.. the brain of some people seems to be absent
@@frap9965 are you fundamentally this insufferable or is it a conscious decision?
@@StarryNightGazing hahahaha why u mad
It may be memorable, but is it memorable for the right. Reasons? It wasn’t known for its quality & high levels of customer service in the last 10 years of its existence.
ITA has one of the best liveries in the Sky.
If only Portugal had the same strategic view to TAP... Beautiful ITA lovery. 🇵🇹🇪🇺
The name "Alitalia" has a nice open sound to it compared to "Ita" which has a hard closed sound. And Alitalia is already a recognized brand across the globe.
People will hate me for this, but as iconic as Alitalia's branding was, ita's just calls to me much more, it is just more contemporary and interesting
Yeah, everyone now hates you 🙄
And it's blue like their football team ^^
I love the blue colour. I forgot about the copyright issues when it comes to designs. Nice video. Keep up the good work
I still remember that the Pope always flew Alitalia. It was synonymous with Italy!
Finally,somebody got scenes
Miss Alitalia flew with them a lot … 1990 was my 1 st international flight from Australia back to Europe … I’ve flown Alitalia domestic also. I haven’t flown ITA yet bc of the pandemic but willing to give it a go and signed up also with I hadn’t with Alitalia
I'm going to be honest I've never flown with Alitalia or ITA Airways but I love the blue on their planes, especially on the A350s I'll be glad to fly with them someday
I look at it as though Alitalia just transformed into Ita Airways is how i see it!!!!! And though the Alitalia brand was a Italian classic however i do absolutely LOVE Ita Airways new brand for itself so either or whether it's Alitalia or ITA i like Both, the old/classic Alitalia and the new ITA 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
Yes, I will miss Alitalia. I am glad they have plans for it.
Interesting!
Alitalia is the name which should stay. It makes 🇮🇹
I really like the Alitalia branding. Maybe there's going to be a merger or acquisition of ITA and Alitalia will return to the skies. Sure hope so
Not a big fan of the name and the livery. It doesn’t speak ‘Italy’ to me..
Not at all. Three Alitalia flights out of four, the baggage was late and the connecting flights were late. It was a mess.
They should’ve done the United/Continental branding style and used Alitalia’s tail livery for ITA
I flew Alitalia once from Palarmo to Rome to catch a connecting flight to Amsterdam. I missed the Amsterdam connection because they were to slow with boarding the plane and they missed the departure window multiple time. Hope ITA is better...
Why? It’s really easy! ITA can simply paint out the excess letters in Alitalia, and leave behind ITA. Money saved!
Alitalia has been the Italian’s pride for many years but after 2004 it was an endless downfall, I am sure ITA’s brand will become like Alitalia’s one in 50 years from now, for now of course everyone is sad Alitalia was an iconic name like TWA, Sabena and all the others that went bankrupt in the years
Bad decision to get rid of the Alitalia brand
Regardless of previous Alitalia failings the brand was synonymous with Italy. The fuselage colours are in excellent choice and the A maintained on the tail. This would of shown a new Alitalia into the future.ITA means nothing you cannot beat the Alitalia name and branding for Italy.
They can start by changing their livery. Especially the tail, that blue doesn’t go with the italian tricolor at all. Looks painful to the eye. The Alitalia livery was simple yet pleasant to view (Of course, the airline itself was a disaster…).
Alitalia has a history! A first quality signature! The closing of Alitalia has nothing to do with costs and revenues! The real story should be told!
Alitalia Forever... 🤗
Alitalia rolls off the tongue in a manner ITA simply doesn't. I might be showing my age, but I still call the successors to defunct legacy airlines by their original names: Swissair (not Swiss), Sabena (not Brussels Airlines) and Alitalia (not ITA). Yes, please bring back the original Alitalia branding ...
i hope they make a retro livery to pay tribute to alitalia
I didn't like the ita livery when it came out but now i find it nice
Alitalia forever
🤔
ALITALIA- arrived late in Torino and luggage in Amsterdam 😂
OR, they didn't properly think through and prepare by getting uniforms and planes ready ahead of Oct 15, so they had to spend $90MM last minute. You be the judge.
Yes - I miss Alitalia.
Unlike Olympic, Alitalia brand survived many bankruptcies and brand transfered to new corporation as it emerged from bankruptcies. However, it does carry the baggage of being a basket case airline that keeps on going bankrupt and keep on having strikes and that image may be an achiles heel for it. The Alitalia brand is certaintly klnown worldwide, but if it is known for the bad reasons, is that an asset to have?
I miss alitalia's 777
Miss so much Alitalia. I don’t like ITA airways and the brand…
I miss Alitalia
Come back Alitalia all is forgiven
It was Alitalia who bought the Ita name with Ita's money.
“We ave the plane, the uniform, the people, the routes…. But we certainly not Alitalia”
As a plane spotter, Alitalia was always a favourite livery. The new airline might be better, but it doesn't look as good.
I miss airone
I still prefer the old classy Alitalia brand logo & livery to that of ITA’s. Also everyone knew Alitalia was the airline of Italy 🇮🇹 simply from the livery, ITA is a confusing mess…
Bring back Alitalia 😢💔
I like ITA because it's blue like the football team's color
Alitalia Always late in takeoff Always late in arrival, was a joke read in a newspaper two decades back.
Bring back Sabina Airlines.
Neither was or will be profitable..
"Alitalia" much loved? Perhaps, but the old joke about that name translating into English as "Lost Luggage" seems to have been earned. Family members experienced it on multiple occasions when connecting on Alitalia flights through Rome...one on both his outbound and return flights! 🙄
A well loved brand?! In ITALY?! Hahahahhaha. Never known an Italian who hasn't ripped into Alitalia
Alitalia was just terrible! Was a simble of "I hate my job" as the crew was ALWAYS in a very bad mood! For long flights, the cabin was very uncomfortable! Please ITA, start fresh!
Friends of mine are Italians, what they said about Alitalia is: Always Late In Taking-off And Late In Arrival.
They deserve the ugliest livery award
Alitalia livery waaaay better, I’m not keen on ITA livery
