Back in 89 I caught Thurston Moore rummaging through my barn. He's like 8 feet tall and none of our traps stopped him. I don't know what he took but whatever it is, he can keep it. Sonic Youth rules!
@@HarkoBarf my dad has psychosis this song hits home.,Im 26 too i was 16 when i stumbled upon this album i was so fucking stoned and just rolled up in a ball in my bed it was life changing. its crazy to think about that 10 exact years. time flies
I'm mostly a metal guy, although I was into hardcore punk during high school, I can still appreciate good underground rock when I hear it. these guys, Drive Like Jehu, Fugazi, The Jesus Lizard, Pavement, etc. are a testament to timeless sounds.
I still have my VHS copy of this film. I bought it for Nirvana (oh come on, you know I wasn't the only one), but ended up watching it over and over late at night with all the lights out and being absolutely thrilled by the intensity of what the Yoof were doing.
When I saw 1991 The Year Punk Broke for the first time,,, I was SO entranced, transfixed and bloody enamored by how otherworldly Sonic Youth was!! I have been a fan ever since ! There is a pain in my soul to have to accept that they are no more. I feel the same way about Nirvana! Such a short but miraculous time for art, thought and music!! My biggest and most sincere hope is that there are still people out there who feel as I do and who are creating music that is way different than all of this mass produced , auto tuned crap that people are -told- to like by TV, Facebook , twitter etc. if you🫵 are a person who feels the way I do ( young or older) DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!! Grab up an instrument ( not a computer) and get rockin! Music is the cure for a troubled soul in troubling times! When I didn’t have any friends when I was young, I felt like I did because of these bands and how different they were because that’s who I was,, different!❤
Saw Dinosaur Jr on their multi night stand in Brooklyn. Lee Renaldo was special guest! Was awesome!!! Him & J have gray/white hair now, but still rockin!!! Amazing performance.
i wish i had the chance to see SY back in those days,And the year punk broke is the best touring/live/documentray/artist/band video ever in my opinion! awesome!!!
Definitely! His drumming on their first works--up to and including Daydream Nation--is phenomenally creative; the part stucturing is ingenious. He shows that drumming does not have to be relegated to a mindless backbeat for mindless music.
The point isn't to sing nice and lovely. the point is to get your feelings across in the way you feel comfortable with - it's all about putting how you feel in the way you see fit. They're not doing it to look cool it's all for a reason.
Oh my..this brings back memories of the first I heard this on a walkman cassette tape I bought and I was in Jacksonville laying down in the back of my parents stationwagon....in the back compartment staring out the back glass looking at the moon and riding into the night with my Dad at the wheel and my Mom shotgun. And my Mom was like "I can hear that noise coming from your headphones, turn it down!" So I didn't. wow. 1985? It was 85 or 86. Such a sweet memory.
@kalemarefrite THANK YOU! I try and try to get through to these over-nostalgic, lost souls but they never listen. There's no reason to live in the yesterday when so much is also happening in the today.
This post has some of the oldest comments! I remember viewing this when it had a handful of views. I too bought this because of Nirvana but came to love SY and Mascis as well. Wore this tape out.
@jimellis123 it's the name of a documentary made about bands around 1991. it includes nirvana and sonic youth for sure, can't think of the others since it's been so long since i've seen it. it's called 1991: the year punk broke and that's where this video comes from.
@kalemarefrite thank you i thought that there was only crap today until i found a gold mine of great bands everyone who thinks there is only crap today just look around
Well InertiaFleur, I think that the Jagmaster didn't come out until '96. The Jazzmaster and the Jaguar did come out in the 60s, but the Jagmaster is the Squier hybrid of the two, and that didn't come out until 1996.
that's what I'm always telling my Mike Portnoy loving friends but they don't get it, Steve is the Charlie Watts of the 80's and 90's; he does what needs to be done in the song and with an exceptional groove
@ElectricPhase this is taken from the film The Year That Punk Broke. It has awesome footage of Nirvana and Sonic Youth playing festivals with a lot of other great bands Dinosaur Jr. included...... CHECK IT OUT!!!!
If you can find the video this clip is from, BUY IT !!! It's called "1991 - The Year Punk Broke" and has footage of tons of other bands touring with them in 1991, like Nirvana (pre-Nevermind!), Dinosaur Jr., Babes in Toyland and even the Ramones. yeah seriously. Sonic Youth is arguably on of the most innovative rock bands in the past 20 years. They put rock into the future and have kept it there.
everybody is allways talking about how great thurston and lee are ( wich they are :d) but almost nobody mentions the great skills of steve shelly, he's an amazing drummer, you should listen to it between 3.00 and 3:30 i realy love them:d
@djdarkmonkey well i moved from LA in 2003 however one thing has remained consistent for all of time. Musicians follow the scene. I think I finally understand why the album is called sister... whenever I listen to the album I feel at home or long for something that doesn't really exist.

@@thomasgraham5840 Bro this comment is from 13 fucking years algo this guy is probably dead 🤣
just kidding hope hes doing good.
I'm happy I came here this morning
bahahahaha
❤❤❤❤❤❤
steve never gets enough credit. His drums are the glue of Sonic Youth.
If anyone doubts Steve Shelley as a drummer, then need only to hear this. Stunning.
By far the best version of Schizophrenia I've heard. Must have been amazing to have witnessed this gig.
YES!
In fact, it’s the only version I listen to. I think it’s because the way Kim sings her part, at least for me
Absolutely amazing version I love it 😎
i was there right up front
I was twelve years old when i bought the Sister album, now i'm 26, it still sounds magical to me.
You must be 34 now, just like me. So, how does it sounds now, mate?

who needs punk when he can have sonic youth?
sonic youth is a punk rock band you turkey!

best drumming ever
Masters of guitar - goosebump city, amazing live playing
shivers down my spine.... still got the vhs
The intro to this song literaly gives me goose bumps, it has such an atmosphere to it.
Love this track so much, saw them play with Pavement in Manchester, one of my fave gigs of all time.
This is one of the best-ever captured versions of the song. I propose making this the official version of Schizophrenia.
Can't help posting how I love that... Surely one of the greatest songs ever written. and I like this version more than the album version
I saw this movie in the theaters and it changed my life!
someone needs to reupload that video, its all pixelated, CZcams has came along ways since 2006

from about 3:30 to 3:40 is one of the most epic things ive ever witnessed the way kim is playin that bass.
thanks for that...very useful
Best recorded version of this song ever.
Kinda sound like Dino jr in this
dino jr were on this tour..
Yeah, the version of Freak Scene from this show is amazing.
I also compare Dino Jr to sonic youth as the more dirty sounding version
Happiness for you and your lady! Cheers from chile mate!
this is beautiful
i saw radio and sonic, amazing!
AMAZING!
I got this VHS at a Value Village for a dollar.
Best dollar I ever spent.
ditto. the first time i heard this performance the middle buildup part was hypnotizing
This footage is taken from '91:the year punk broke'. Would be good if this got a DVD release. Great song.
Sonic Youth . Too much love. Lee is the man.
Hasta me dieron ganas de llorar
Que buenos son!!!
gonna miss them so much :-(
its best video of Sonic Youth
thanks
I personally like the way this sounds here better than the album version. The end when the drumming picks up sounds a lot fuller.
focus in on the bass @ 3:38 and then just listen. one of the most beautiful sounds ever created by humans
Good keep listening to the older grunge stuff seriously the majority of the stuff on MTV and the airwaves today is treacherous!

this and 100% were what got me into them.
As much as i like the older stuff. I really feel they have gotten better as band. The last 3 albums were all really good. Their best work yet.

@Rapchaid i agree .. but few bands have this integrity and talent that sonic youth has. most forget about integrity along the way to the middle.
