I have been knapping for years and, shame to say, have always struggled with knotching. This has helped me tremendously, thank you thank you thank you.

A lot of great stuff here. The big diagrams and extra little tips should help me get through this frustrating part of my flintknapping journey. I have been ruining way too many good points as of late and I can't wait till notching is a fun activity as opposed to a fearful experience! Thanks

EXCELLENT, Mike Cook! The aggetized styrophom, with the red C/L and the Herzian Cone, tells so much. Thank You.

My approach to notching has always been to notch last. For practice purposes i did the opposite Notching narrow and deep has destroyed a lot of my points.I decided to create a version of the hammered nail notching tool that you made and experiment once again. I used a roughed out Dacite flake and the results were good. I say good because i was able to go in about 7/16 deep keeping the width at about 3/32 without snapping the ears. Probably could have went further but it wasn't necessary. Thanks

Practice is a big component. But ….. I still have a question and would like the benefit of your experience of how to avoid.
I am pressing vertically downward. The arrowhead is beveled. Indentation and the tiniest rocking on a notching pad and “pop” off comes an ear.
So, I place a piece of leather on the Notching Pad so the BASE of the arrowhead hangs over the edge of the leather suspended in air. It’s hard to get everything aligned.
How to you avoid bevel rocking, depression of the point, while pressing to detach the notch flake?
I guess more practice, I hope you understand the circumstance I described.

An outstanding notching video. I appreciate your effort and time spent both telling and showing your secret to perfect notches. I noticed you push from the top of the piece rather than from the bottom. Do you sell or trade your points? Wouldn't mind owning one! Thanks again!

It doesn't grow everywhere. Best thing to do is find a nearby knap-in and talk to the local guys. They may not tell you their secret spots but will point you in the right direction.

I never notch, and hunt with my points. What many call arrowheads - I call spear points; what many call bird points - I call deer points.
What is called "Flintknapping" (the word created and associated with a type of firearm); is used by people who never actually lived with, or use the tools of the culture they claim to be an expert.
My great-grandfather said, "Notching is something you sell the City Folk; they need to see how the point is held on."
I do appreciate your skill shown.
