I have been knapping for years and, shame to say, have always struggled with knotching. This has helped me tremendously, thank you thank you thank you.
A lot of great stuff here. The big diagrams and extra little tips should help me get through this frustrating part of my flintknapping journey. I have been ruining way too many good points as of late and I can't wait till notching is a fun activity as opposed to a fearful experience! Thanks
EXCELLENT, Mike Cook! The aggetized styrophom, with the red C/L and the Herzian Cone, tells so much. Thank You.
Thank you so much for this video! I’m sure watching it will help me in one of my weakest skills.
Extremely concise & helpful! Thank you!
Thanks for this video Mike! Great instruction and very clear and easy to understand. I have trouble with notching too, just like you did. But I'll use your vid to help me get better.
Just what I needed....... at just the right time.
My approach to notching has always been to notch last. For practice purposes i did the opposite Notching narrow and deep has destroyed a lot of my points.I decided to create a version of the hammered nail notching tool that you made and experiment once again. I used a roughed out Dacite flake and the results were good. I say good because i was able to go in about 7/16 deep keeping the width at about 3/32 without snapping the ears. Probably could have went further but it wasn't necessary. Thanks
Absolutely incredible. Maybe the best tutorial on notching yet!! Thanks.
Fantastic Mike! Great video to help with one of my biggest issues with knapping. Thanks, John
Thanks Comrad!
Very well put together Mike.....Outstanding and very understandable..Thanks
Very informative! Thanks for posting.
I’ve struggled with notching for years….I finally get it. Thank you for posting this video! Now…if only you’d post a video on how you make those long, narrow flakes on a slab.
Awesome vid! Your explanation of notching and showing a diagram is superb! Thanks :)
Thanks arto.. about the time my notch stalled out on some of my beautiful preforms ... so would my brain.. but not anymore.... thanks very very very helpful...
Very good descriptions and explanations. Thanks for your post!
Just watched this again. Still awesome!!
Great info thanks Mike
Mike, your film and editing skills have progressed as well as your flint knapping. Looks good.
Nice, informative video Mike. I may give it a try myself.
Thanks Mike!
Practice is a big component. But ….. I still have a question and would like the benefit of your experience of how to avoid.
I am pressing vertically downward. The arrowhead is beveled. Indentation and the tiniest rocking on a notching pad and “pop” off comes an ear.
So, I place a piece of leather on the Notching Pad so the BASE of the arrowhead hangs over the edge of the leather suspended in air. It’s hard to get everything aligned.
How to you avoid bevel rocking, depression of the point, while pressing to detach the notch flake?
I guess more practice, I hope you understand the circumstance I described.
Thank you so much for your time to help people like me.lol
William Cleveland I’m glad it helped you. Keep knapping.
great video Mike love your work
Thanks, I will go after those practice flakes tomorrow.
Awesome Mike. More videos!!!
Very informative video !!! I suck at notching. I mainly just go find already notched ones. =)
Thank you for sharing your craft sir.
Best notching video and entertaining, now heading to Moscow ...
Are your beautiful parallel flaked points flake over grind ?
Usable information.
Thanks!
An outstanding notching video. I appreciate your effort and time spent both telling and showing your secret to perfect notches. I noticed you push from the top of the piece rather than from the bottom. Do you sell or trade your points? Wouldn't mind owning one! Thanks again!
How do you go about finding and identifying flint? Where should one start looking? Great vids :)
Great video. At what thickness are the points you're demonstrating? I seem to have it stall out as the thickness get to 1/4".
great video thanks. i liked your funning around :)
Very informative thanks
Great vid, really informative. thanks
Very informative. Thanks.
thanks for upload.
do you have a video on pressure flaking too?
It doesn't grow everywhere. Best thing to do is find a nearby knap-in and talk to the local guys. They may not tell you their secret spots but will point you in the right direction.
The point with the spot pattern. What kind of stone is that?
Question: You think that notching tool would work out if made from bone? Or and old cheap screwdriver converted.
Another question, what is the handpad your using made from? Looks like it works well. Im trying to upgrade from a piece of leather in my hand to something more substantial like what your using.
Do you knapp from spalls or slabs? Beautiful work by the way.
Think Mike does alot of fog grinding. An art in itself.
Do you ever do your notching first ?
Complimenti!
thanks!!!!
at 5:00 funny stuff made me laugh.
I never notch, and hunt with my points. What many call arrowheads - I call spear points; what many call bird points - I call deer points.
What is called "Flintknapping" (the word created and associated with a type of firearm); is used by people who never actually lived with, or use the tools of the culture they claim to be an expert.
My great-grandfather said, "Notching is something you sell the City Folk; they need to see how the point is held on."
I do appreciate your skill shown.
So this is thee mike cook huh? Haha u live in NY too huh
