I never understood why this show never exploded past a million subs. It makes no sense to me.
I mean if you really want an answer, retro gaming isn't that big, media wise. A show like AVGN got over a million subs due to constantly popping out retro content since 2007.
CZcams's algorithm is a fickle mistress.
I found out about console wars from Mr Metokur casually dropping their channel name on a livestream a couple of years ago. how I never knew about them before that is beyond me. Same with Gamesack. Algorithm fail
@@InternetTAB if only you knew about Creative Cat Productions! 😝
If you really want an answer? Here's my review. Anecdotal, but I'm willing to bet I'm not alone.
The meat and potatoes of each video, which is the comparison, is awesome. You can tell that these games are well researched and that the team knows what makes a good game.
The skits?
I'll be honest.
The skits are really, really bad. The puppets are bad. They just aren't funny. They are like, weaker than Nostalgia Critic's skits, and that's one of the things that killed that show (among other things that we won't speak of)
That's not to say you can't include antics. For example, I *loved* the puking scene in the Contra comparison, years ago. That was pure gold. But the several minutes of skits before and after? Eeeeh, I usually just skip those.
Without them, and simply focusing on the comparison itself (you don't need a comedic intro. "I'm Nintendo, and I'm Sega, and this time around we are discussing Zool,") would be enough.
It's nothing personal. Most people who try to be funny fail at it. Let the humor come naturally while discussing the game. :)
I hope this show never goes big budget. That public access channel corniness is magic.
Avgn docet
Me neither, I have learned so much about space. They might replace that information with something else.
This show has taught me to always write down my score in games in case I need it to stop a terrorist plot.
The psycho laugh of Pat is top act!
And that Zool costume looks so cool, keep up the good work guys!
Zool is just the right level of C tier that he would absolutely have a Cameo 😂
More like a Z Lister 🤣🤣
Aahhh! Real Monsters is Next. You did an amazing job doing this episode, Dan and Pat. You guys are so awesome!
I hope the SNES version can actually win for once if I recall, I think Genesis has been dominating recently...I think the LAST time SNES "won" was Separation Anxiety and both agreed it was more the one that sucked a little less...lol
@@Avalon64 well, Sega has been on a winning streak lately, but I think that was after a Nintendo winning streak happened, so it's kind of balancing out.
Also, I didn't quite get that out of the next episode hint, but it's a better guess than I've got.
Hey man I just read ur comment, I also think it's gonna be Ahhh! Real monsters, but u beat me to it by 6 hours... XD
I think Console Wars schedule videos in order in such the Wins keep balanced for both. Which is great!
@@3xperiment8 I personally don't think so, I think they pick games based on what they are feeling and in line with what real world events are happening ie something scary for Halloween, something Christmasy for Christmas, I don't think they intentionally trying to balance wins between the two consoles and are trying to pick a winner with a fresh set of eyes if they haven't played the game...I think the FEW times they might have an obvious winner in mind like TMNT Tournament Fighters but every other time they are using their selected criteria to determine which is the better game even fi it wins by something very small
All the bits were absolutely top-notch, I died laughing. Great work!
Thank you!
You died? Damn.
That Zool cameo skit was top tier 😂. Great video, guys.
@@darthkai8242 would've been better on the CD-i but whatevs
It lasted way too long -_-
@@Harbluia it's subjective but I enjoyed the whole thing
Thank you kindly!
@@Harbluia You get more for your money!
The Zool birthday message had me in stitches.😅🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
WTF you got Zool to do a cameo? That's f in awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great to see him doing well after all these years.
What I love about these console wars videos is that they've generally looked the same as if they're recorded from the mid 2000s 🤘
Once again the snes resolution is cropped, the greatest quote in console wars episode's 😆
Fun fact: The 'Chupa Chups' brand and logo was heavily featured in the Zool series as part of their sponsorship and even featured in the opening title and the first level
"Sweet World". Zool was in the middle of the 90's more or less THE mascot for the company.
8:28 You both had too much fun filming that segment 😂
Graphics: It is nice to not have cropping to see more, but color changing as the screen scrolls is a nice touch. There are special differences in both. Tie.
Presentation: Genesis version has a slight edge with the ending sequence. Everything else is not much effort otherwise. Sega.
Sound: Both systems have their own uniqness. Nothing really giving an edge. Tie.
Gameplay: Same as the sound department. Tie.
Sega has a slight edge for the win here, but both are excellent. Draw your own conclusion.
Aahhh! Real Monsters is Next.
Yeah, both are great
*The world needs to see more adventures of Doctor Pepper* 😄
Your sketches are so classic. xD
"Obviously this is the delete b..."
well done xD
Thank you!
It's amusing that Zool seems to be best remembered for it's cancelled Wii game that resulted in a bunch palette swap bargain priced games that often get reviewed by by youtubers looking for bad games.
It was probably best that the Wii game didn't happen :P
ReDimensioned absolutely did what the NinjaBreadMan remake never could, so I'm in agreement.
Great episode! Great skit too!
Interesting fact and a bit of fun trivia that you might not have known: The PAL release of the SEGA Mega Drive port was published by Electronic Arts and is region locked so it won't play on NTSC Genesis systems and I think it came out first just before the American Genesis release by Game Tek. Also the PAL version has a smaller hud on the bottom making the play area slightly larger.
The SEGA port oddly misspells Krisalis as ''Krysalis'' for some reason and doesn't credit Matt Furniss for the music and audio conversion, something he rightfully complained about in an internet forum about which games he actually got credited for years later.
I did not know that
@@ConsoleWars Can Mario and Sonic play they're Consoles in a Next Episode?
@@alelauguz Gracias!
Right when gameplay was compared it was the nail in the coffin for zool on the SNES
Not even the backflip could save him.
The amiga original is at the Snes speed. It is more faithful to the the original.
Guys, I love your stuff. I've watched every episode at least three times. Sometimes I just leave it running while I work from home.
That laugh at the end of the score skit hahahaha
Yet Another Great Episode, Console Wars (Pat and Dan)
Thank you!
That time has come to watch a new console wars and dive back in and rewatch random old episodes! Always good to see you guys! Keep it up!
I'm guessing the next episode (specifically for this Halloween season) will be Aaahh! Real Monsters. I wonder if that game will be part of a "which game's worse?" episode.
Was it a bad game ? I had it as a kid..... On the Sega Genesis. I remember it having some problems but I didn't hate it. It wasn't as bad as some other games.
@@Gatorade69 "I had It as a kid... On the Sega Genesis."
Sure, but was much better on the Super Nintendo.
@@3xperiment8 What !? Are we doing this !?
That was an amazing episode! I’m glad Sega won again! I know I love SNES but Sega really needs more love! Next episode should be good! The hint is very interesting, by the way!
That intro song always gets me hyped, never get rid of it! :DDD
We never will
@@ConsoleWars ❤
Great video, dudes! Your channel is one of my all time favorites
Thank you!
The skits are going off the rails more and more and I’m here for it. 😂
3:21 for a moment there, I thought my laptop crashed.😆
i can't stress enough how good those ''facts'' we get each ep are.
also can't stress enough how good these 2 guys act in those situations where they put themselves in the most comical of random situations.
also, is it just me, or the snes version has no CHUPA CHUPS logo in it ? nintendo hates that brand ?
i nevever liked this game, played the DOS version that for some reason it was left out from the ports at the start, then the AMIGA CD 32 version, and i must admit, never saw the appeal.
as always, amazing ep, so much effort put in it, and just a fun time, keep it up guys, from ur biggest fan.
Thanks for the kind words as usual!
Great and hilarious ep as always guys.
Please keep making these. Even when you run out of SNES and Genesis multiplats. Just find similar games and compare them. This show rules.
Room looks more lit than usual.
Great video!!!
It got painted
Watching your videos is always so fun :D
9:02 epic laugh Pat! Totally unhinged. Nice work!
I can't get enough of this channel. The skits have me laughing so damn hard. Been here for a few years and never get tired of it. Thank you guys!
Glad you still enjoy it!
Another great video guys! Can’t wait for the next one!
Thank you!
I'm just waiting for Dr. Pepper to confront his arch nemesis, Mr. Pibb, in a high stakes high score challenge.
Good god, this was very very funny. One of the best videos yet. I laughed audibly several times. “Don’t ask about Eric” killed me. 😂😂
Good job, fellers
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@ConsoleWars it was sooooooo good!!
So happy with the latest episode!
I'm happy you're happy
They do an amazing job on everything they do. I'm surprised they haven't gotten more recognition than they already have! Keep it up guys, You two keeping me laughing even when I'm having a really bad day.
LOOL I love how you guys tried to explain what zool was. I never thought about that.
Thank you for all you guys do!
Thanks for watching!
Hey, Dan and Pat! I missed the premiere, but I watched the episode now... nice one!!!
Hey, is the next episode "Ahhh! Real Monsters"? lol
Thank you!
Best game comparison channel on CZcams, period!
Thank you
Nice episode again. But the situation parts you always do (code is score, lieves, etc) you should make a short movie about it. It´s really cool.
It's bad enough we shouldn't ask about Eric, but now we shouldn't ask about Doug either!
Glad the evil Pat laugh is back!!
Always enjoying these videos & I stand by what I said years ago about how you're some of the best content creators ever whose content never gets stale!!!
Thank you sir!
if we put a green screen on zoom, would his arms disappear lol? Also as an astronomy nerd, I always appreciate Pat's comments right before he starts the analysis
As an alcoholic I also appreciate his space alcohol comments. Maybe there's a giant cloud of heroin in space....
I really think we need some more background into Doctor Pepper's past and motivations. I personally think being named as a young boy after a second tier soda is what led him to this life of dishonesty and violence.
New episode let's go! I'm gonna play whatever version wins !
I love your videos guys. Make my day/evening/whateverwhenIwatchthem.
I like the nice detail of having "Zool" throwing two different color projectiles in the 1on1 fight. Really nice touch.
I don't remember which episode introduced Nintendo's completely irrelevant trivia but it was a stroke of genius.
They’re always fun to do
Best lollipop add of all time.
Very kind of Zool to send Dan not just one but THREE birthday Cameos! XD
Always subscribed, liked, and comment. Keep it up boys!!
You guys better be eating some chupa chup lollipops in this video!
Zool Redimensioned is actually a lot of fun.
And the replay value is huge. Ended up becoming the first game I started attempting speed runs with
I gotta try it
eh, a few months now that i have last checked if Console Wars got some new epidodes, or seen any old ones, until earlier today your show came to my mind and i checked the channel, then watched the latest eps i havent seen plus an old one as a bonus, as the last thing before i went out.. then hours later i come home, turn on the browserbox - and theres a brand new Console Wars ep uploaded just an hour ago...:) and zool! (i love when you do european games, esp. if its an amiga title:)
Glad you're all caught up!
"yoooo, you got a leather jacket?" "yeah. you got the music clip used by mark felton productions?" "yeah. we good"
Dr Pepper returns! YES!!! I love the Dr Pepper running gags! Great episode again, guys!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I definitely agree about sound being a tie. However I think Sega wins in graphics. The cropped SNES version is a big pet peeve, also it seems like it is also stretched to fit the screen which is a big No No when it comes to me. (Like how your parents will stretch out a 4:3 image to fill in a 16:9 screen, Grrr !)
Excellent episode. Looking forward to Aahhh! Real Monsters.
I remember it very well. It was the "Sonic" of Amiga 500. There were even some "urban legends" that at the end of the game he would have taken off his mask revealing the face of Sonic.
I love the killer robot! Hilariously goofy. Maybe the best skit I've seen on one of your videos.
This is one tough game. Kinda cool though.
Shout at demons next... They are really going obscure now
We're running out of games lol
DUDE RGT85 just gave you a shout out on his las video!!! That’s awesome
Aaahh!!! Real Monsters I'll look forward to it.
New console wars video = Instant like 👍
Great episode! Only played the sequel on Jaguar actually. Loved it. The Sega Genesis music sounds so much more "Hi-Fi" and better here.
I def wanna give the sequel a shot
It really baffles me how this channel doesn't have more subscribers.
Yes! Here right on time !
Don't take it the wrong way, but TBH I usually don't enjoy your skits as much as I do the rest of your videos...
BUT that Zool Cameo had me dying 🤣😂! One of your best guys, great work! All the skits were great in this episode.
P.S. would have been even better if they were a couple lmao, the cherry on top 😂
Glad you liked it!
Don't you love when good quality content hit your CZcams's inbox?
There is no Dana, only Zool!
Zool was a favorite of mine to rent for the Genesis, always had a great weekend with it. Unfortunately, my mom never could find it for sale so I could own it so she could only rent it for me. Great job once again guys!
I finally got to play Zool thanks to the A500 Mini and it's pretty good. A tad hard (save states are a blessing) and I wish I had a manual to explain things better, but pretty decent. I look forward to seeing how the Mega Drive and SNES versions fair.
1:06 - Love how you actually used the phone video format for this bit. A cool presentation detail. The awkwardness of it all is hilarious.
4:21 - It's nice enough just to hear the Amiga get mentioned but surprising to hear about the Acorn Archimedes. I believe Zool also had a port for the Jaguar but I may be remembering things incorrectly.
I prefer the Zool sprite in the SNES version and the overall wider look but the backgrounds look better in the Mega Drive version. Plus, the 5:22 cropping issue of the SNES version would be a major hindrance given Zool's high speed. I'm surprised Nintendo won the graphics category but I suppose the screen cropping is more an issue when it comes to the gameplay.
9:06 - The sketch was already hilarious but oh gosh; that last line! Brilliant!
19:10 - I really like how fair and balanced you were with this review. You were able to highlight the game's strengths whilst recognising it's flaws and how some of them are a result of it's strengths.
Appreciate your insightful thoughts!
@@ConsoleWars An I appreciate the reply back to me and the consistently funny and fair reviewing content you create.
i only played the amiga version..but i m glad to have learned more about this one
OH YEAH! I'm doing this! After a day of work nothing beats some good old fashion Console warring!
Like Sega I used blast processing to get the video ready, and like Nintendo I delayed the viewing until everything [snacks] was just right!
Loved playing Zool on my 286 in the early 90's.
Good job as always fellas.
Thank you!
17:21 You don't start from the checkpoint, you start at the beginning of the stage (and you have to collect all the bonuses again).
Great Episode! Keep up the good work! I’ve got a few suggestions:
The Incredible Hulk
Dragon ball Z ( super famicom vs Sega megadrive)
Shaq Fu
The Terminator
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past vs Crusader of Centy
Super Mario World vs Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Another cropped screen on Snes. It happened in all Amiga ports basically. Chuck Rock, Wolfchild, Cool Spot, Robocop 3. List goes on and on. That happened because devs would port without adjusting to Snes aspect ratio accordingly. And only (and always) happened on Amiga ports. I can't remember a single Amiga port with entire screen actually.
Robocop 3 was not an Amiga port.
@@SomeOrangeCat Thanks. That makes a Genesis to Snes Port. Which same phenomenon occured. Amiga and Genesis hardware were very similar. With same programming, cpu and all. That's why we saw always downgrades on these games where Genesis / Amiga were the heading versions, and then after brought to Snes. Mickey Mania, Toy Story, Flashback, etc
@@3xperiment8 About all the Genesis and Amiga had in common was the CPU. Its why so many quick and dirty ports between the two systems existed.
Love wolfchild and chuck rock 2
@@Chillywilly8818 Loved wolchild too! Amazing soundtrack. I finished the Snes version in 1 sit playing for the first time. Which is so rare for me. Beat the last boss with 1 health left. Didn't have to break any controllers on this one xD
It’s coming, a ball character, soon they’ll get to Ballz 3D! Thanks so much for making my dream come true eventually, love you both ❤️
Like always, very good video. But so bad you didn't found an amiga CD 32 fan as some guest star for the video, it could have been very good to compare the Genesis, Super Nes and Amiga CD 32 versions.
It would be great too to do that for a console wars about Pitfall (Genesis, Super Nes and Jaguar).
I love this show so much
I frickin love Zool so I was so hyped to see this episode
Wish the controls were better
@@jonahabenhaim1223 That's where ReDimensioned shines. 😉
Great video as always, could you do a comparison of Flashback?
I have only one objection to Zool's speed.
The american version of Zool for sega genesis goes (in my opinion) too fast, so much so that at times it is uncontrollable.
the European version of Zool for megadrive has the right speed, neither too fast nor too slow, its very comfortable to play this version because the control is simply good.
the SNES version of Zool is kinda fast, but it is very slow compared to the two sega ports.
in case you are wondering, the european version is the original port, the american version was modified to make zool go faster, you know, Sonic influence.
Agreed. MegaDriver version matches the speed to the SNES version. But even then, I kinda agree with the points made in the video. It's close, even though I love the SNES version.
@@Saxdude26 it's possible that it's a placebo effect, I feel that the megadrive version is slightly faster than SNES 🤏
still, both versions, megadrive and SNES are enjoyable.
the american version of Zool is simply too fast that it is almost uncontrollable.
Without watching the video at 1st, I was sure Genesis would win in the end, great episode and good to know that I was pretty much on spot about what would end up being the categories that the Genesis ended up taking the edge before watching the episode.
The lore of Dr. Pepper continues!!!
"Man, they are really giving it to Doug!" 🤣🤣🤣
9:00 That laugh is creepy, man. You could be the next (V.O.) Joker. Mark Hamill... eat your heart out.
Check out our Batman Forever episode, if you haven't. I don't think I have a good Joker moment, but I can also do a hell of a Conroy. Also, thank you for picking up on the influence!
@@DecayNJ Awesome! Will check out the Batman Forever episode.
Man! You just keep getting better and better!
This is probably gonna be my favorite episode of 2022!
Of course, there are still 2 months to go, so I can't be 100% sure.
Anyway, I believe that a large part of why I love this episode so much is the choice of games.
Such great and varied graphics plus exciting-looking gameplay made all the game footage a real treat to watch.
I'd seen some footage of the Zool beforehand, so I got the impression that it comes across as a Sonic the Hedgehog wannabe.
With that in mind, my main concern with Zool that I was hoping to get addressed is as follows:
Does the fast speed of Zool
A) Make playing the game feel like a classic Sonic game, possibly making it feel like
a worthy Sonic-substitute.
B) Make the game feel more like chore to play, like the Bubsy game that you covered in a previous episode.
So glad to see that it's more like Option A! Thanks for clearing that up!
Anyway, as much as I loved the actual review, the beginning and ending skits were fun too.
The beginning skit was alright, but man, the ending skit was amazing!
Definitely made the stuff being set up in the beginning skit worth it all!
Hmmmm, Cameo.com videos. Interesting idea for a plot.
Cameo.com is something I learnt of by accident.
A few of the Irate Gamer episodes that Chris "Irate Gamer" Bores made after his 4-year hiatus boasted guest appearances by celebrities, including Ernie Hudson.
However, these were all just videos from Cameo.com.
You wouldn't happen to have gotten the idea for this episode's plot about Cameo.com videos from the Irate Gamer, would you?
Just wanna get that cleared up.
Anyway, thanks for another excellent episode! You're on really a roll this year!
As for the next episode, judging by the "Next Episode Hint", and the fact that Halloween is coming up, I'm guessing it's gonna be "Aaahh!!! Real Monsters".
Later!
Glad you enjoyed the episode. The Cameo idea wasn't inspired by anything. Just something I thought of.
The Man is dead
While I do agree on the outcome, personal rundown would go like this:
- graphics: Sega (great colors and unique effects in each version but the mega drive's higher resolution provides crisper visuals and better aspect ratio)
- presentation: Sega (for every reasons you said)
- sound: Nintendo (both versions have good soundtracks but the extra SFX for the enemies and such on SNES are a nice touch)
- gameplay: Sega (for every reasons you said + the wider FOV on sega thanx to the higher resolution)
Winners = Sega
Great episode! Is there an online list with the current standings?
I see Maximum Carnage back there behind Pat
If the Cameo reference isn't a wink and a nod to another CZcamsr that uses Cameo a lot, I will be sad. Overall, excellent video! Thanks guys for making a good day better!
The Cameo was not a reference to anyone. Just having fun with the whole cameo thing
By god. Is Zool painfully relatable.
The game came out the year I was born... wow, it all makes sense now.
