  • In this video we machine some old scrap cast iron into a straight edge for a friend . It was a fun day in the shop using several of the machine tools .
I also modify an old bell crank handle to make it work better on my dake shop press.

A technique I came across recently that I thought I'd share, really blew my mind, and the few pro machinists listening as well.
If you're surface grinding a part and, for whatever reason, none of the surfaces are close enough to "flat" for your liking, or you've flipped it over a few times and seem to be chasing a high or low you can't pin down, try this.
Take one (or 2 stacked sheets, depending) of paper towel or shop towel, and soak in water. Lay them between the part and mag chuck and magnetize. Depending how janky the part is, you might want to take a light pass, flip, light pass, flip, etc. just until there aren't really deep lows or highs.
The science behind this being, the saturated towel will help even out the highs and lows by allowing highs to sink further into the towel. Also, from what I've seen of this trick, for whatever reason the finish will be so much better than normal! 🤔

I'll bet machine operator in China runs 3, 4, or 5 scrapers at a time, and sharpen the tools while they're all running. So I'm thinking they can make a buck off those old machines with very cheap tooling.

If the scraping straightedge was for a 60 degree dovetail on a lathe cross slide, seems like cutting a 45 degree bevel one side would work well, & not have removed that much material, & would have probably been fine for a short dovetail.. anything will bend slightly. Also, a lighter straightedge can have better feel spotting a small surface, especially in a corner. Great to see some satisfying small projects!
