What Do Comic Book Dealers Think Of The Current Comic Market? SDCC 2023 Comic Con Discussion

- In this video we are back at it once again talking to COMIC BOOK DEALERS this time at SAN DIEGO COMIC CON 2023. I always enjoy putting these types of videos together because I think its always great hearing from all these experts and getting their thoughts on what is going on in the current comic book collecting market. This time I hit them with a very straight forward question "How do they feel about the current comic market?" With so many changes going on in the pop culture landscape, economic market and SAG/WGA strikes, its interesting to hear about the stuff that is trending on the comic con floor.
Hope you guys enjoy the video!

A year ago in a similar video, all the dealers said it was the time to buy. But now it's also the time to buy. I'm predicting that next year and every year after will be the best time to buy.
I was looking for this comment. Take it with a grain of salt when a dealer says that "now is the time to buy".
To buy comics, that’s actually the point of going.
@@kahnlives Partly. But even if you're buying, that's not the same as saying it's the BEST time to buy, is it? You can go and just look, check out whether the dealers have adjusted to the current market (many apparently haven't), talk about comics with other fans, etc.
@@TT-fq7pl Agree, but in end the dealers are there to sell some books.
@@kahnlives Absolutely. That's their job, after all. I just sometimes get tired of hearing the same old pitches about the best time to buy. But at least a few of these dealers talked about being open to offers. That's a change from last year, for sure.
Excellent video. Regarding the absence of Hollywood, good riddance to the tourists. Make SDCC a comic-con again.
Well said
Or just stay home altogether. All the money spent on hotel, airfare, food, bar tab, etc can be saved and spent on comic books.
Yes, and AMEN!
Wondering if the dealers that mentioned themselves as being slower then previous years, are still pricing their books at 21, 22 prices.
The Undertaker woking at Torpedo Comics and with a foreign accent was an unexpected twist in the video.
Lol that guy must go through a tub of protein powder a day
Love these updates. The one trend I noticed though is being stuck under covid prices. There was no mention of pre-covid/comic boom price inflation. I watched books like New Mutants 98 go from $200 to $1000. None of the dealers seemed to have any trouble upping their price tags. Dealers should be able to ebb & flow with the market. Why are they not watching their long term capitol? Expecting buyers to absorb their losses a bit unfair.
Just want to compliment you on conducting such good interviews-a skill that not everyone has
Mostly sober assessments with minimum hype, which is appreciated. Interesting to hear what things are / aren't moving. It seems more specific genres or characters etc. get more love at cons. If you don't negotiate prices at cons you really should be!
I go through dollar bins at my local dealers. Lol I don't spend much, get fun stuff, and don't care how much they are worth.
Swag, once again, you have provided a really great video. Your ability to have each of the dealers speak to you and provide a different slant each and every time was very interesting and worth watching. I have contemplated taking a table at a local comic show and this has provided me substance on determining if I am going to do it and what it is that I would bring to sell. Thank you so much for this great. Community service.
Always love this video series! There are some consistent thoughts here and a lot of good advice.
I personally have overpaid on numerous books, sold books for cheaper then they should've, even sold books for way more then I've bought them for, its part of the hobby but you learn from your mistakes
Love these videos where u interview the guys who run the booth.I love doing this in person at SDCC (and all cons), but haven’t been able to get out and do these in the last few years. Thanks for sharing.
Brad from FVF is one of the best dealers to buy from. Always gives deals if your buying a few comics. He helped me finish off my run of Jonah Hex a few years ago. Great comic book seller.
Im loving these dealer chats. I was at Con and definitely noticed more foot traffic in the exhibit hall.
Thanks for the video Swag. I really appreciate the perspective of the dealers at the Cons. Keep grinding bro!✌️
Such an informative video, especially for me as a newer collector 🙌🏼 Buy what you love, and have fun ❤
Gotta say, this vid was way more informative than I expected. Very happy I watched. Ty and Happy Hunting👍
One of the best videos of the year !!
Thank you for posting this. It has renewed my interest in trying to find a few comics I once had in my youth, as well as a black and white comic of a Samurai story I once saw in the early nineties.
Great video and a lot of good information and interviews. I am subscribing to your channel.
Just an Amazing show, I loved the feedback from these dealer's. I recognized most of them.
Love the range you brought us in this video! Nice job---
This is very entertaining and insightful bro! Thanks for doing this and sharing! 🙂
thanks swag, these mkt report videos are some if my favorite that you do,....good job and good info.....ive bought from many of these dealers you interview and id recommend any of them.
Love the market review at the cons with the dealers. These videos for me are replacing the Overstreet Market reports that came out with the big book of fun every year.
Excellent vid sir 🙌🏻 different takes, different perspectives. All great info
Always good to see the dealers opinion on the market
These are my favorite videos. I do watch all of your videos.
Really enjoyed this video and helps me to know as I suspected that now is a good time to be looking for buys. Speaking of, when are you doing another live sale?
1st time checking out your vlog, nice vid man!
great show really enjoyed it thanks for sharing and giving a little sense of what it must have been like to be there [im from uk] really interesting dealer opinions i’m with the mc fly guygreat outlook on collecting keep em coming ❤
Also I noticed a few dealers were saying not to put your money in banks while there are plenty of high yield savings accounts that offer 5 percent and cds that get you 6 percent. THINKING 🤔
If real inflation is 6% its a wash.
FVF was the best interview for me, I really appreciate his authenticity. I’m a small fry in the hobby, and I watch these dealers interviews as a reference point for a wishful future where I’m not minimum wage paycheque to paycheque.
Excellent, really appreciate you sharing.
solid effort muh'man ... really like this content
Super nice job - Swaggs has the scoop on comics for the future - good to here people are buying - great interviews there also Swaggs
Bob from High Grade Comics was the best, well rounded, real and genuine interview for me! Bob 💯
Everyone was great, but Bob was so down to earth.
The dealer videos are so good keep it Swagglehaus
Love these videos thank you swaggle
Nice Intro with the Killer Comics displayed....Hell Yeah!
Clicked on this video just because I noticed Steve from Pawn Stars. Ended up loving the video. Just started getting comics a few years ago
Great reporting as usual!!
Thanks for the insightful video!
Nice interviews Swagglehaus!
guy in blue shirt translation - my stuff is overpriced, but you should pay that price because i overpaid myself lol
Really dig these videos Swag!
Thanks for sharing
Yeah... I believe it when a dealer says its "more fun" to sell X-Men 1 for $7,000 than $12,000.
Wait a year from now it will be $4000. Lol
Hey, this is Bob in Connecticut. Well, I got very lucky I got A raw copy years ago of X-Men 1 for only $300 I got the book graded it’s 7.0 if I wanted to sell it of course I would get roughly $30,000. It’s going to go much higher than that a little more than a year ago. 7.0 the sold price was in the $60,000 range.. everything will come back especially amazing fantasy 15 that’s going nowhere. I still have my amazing fantasy 15.6.0 I only paid $4000 now it’s in the $80,000 range.
More fun was probably the wrong word to use but I was trying to convey that it’s better for both buyers and sellers when books are more reasonably priced. We are able to secure better books for inventory (more fun), and buyers are able to get their grails at cheaper prices (also more fun!).
Amazing Video!!
thanks, mickey, these are some of my favorite videos you do,...glad all the dealers made good money,.....i think it is the time to buy for silver age keys and up,....and the more plentiful the supply, like most moderns- copper age,, the more i would ask off,....
Good assessments. Seems to be a buyers market.
I’m happy for the comic books guys
Hey you interviewed Jaime. Good guy from SoCal comics. Bought from them in the past. Great company, great guy
I didn't know The Undertaker was a comics dealer.
These are great
Just an idea, but maybe you could do a similar video interviewing collectors and big buyers?
great video. would love to know how these guys are making trades or trading more of the bulk for a favorable position.
good content here .... some good speeches about the hobby ,,, felt like some of those folks could run for office and be politicians thought i tell you !!!!!!!!!!! lol
I absolutely love these, my only criticism is that it wasn't long enough, it seems its not complete without Elveen, the guy from Finest city comics and some other, great video $wag!
Thx! And don’t worry I’ll talk to all of them again, they just weren’t setup at SDCC
@Swagglehaus keep them coming, its cool to get their insights and I love hearing that the future is looking good, great questions as usual 😀
It's easy and obvious. Been collecting since the 80's and it's just a cycle. But don't sell right now. Eventually record prices will return. When they do sell don't buy. As long as you don't sell right now and buy all the you can afford you will be ok. Time to hold and look around and buy the deals.
Cool video Swaggs!
Great video, Swagg! Did you buy anything?
Half the dealers say its been great (maybe they priced right?) and the other half have been “eh…its been slow to start..” (thinking they’re a bit on the high side). As a fixed income trader, people in my line of work are all about “mark to market” to get continuous action. Win some and lose some. If you’re right in the aggregate you’ll be fine. Your business acumen will dictate success. Cons are the best place to observe and exploit capitalism. Nothing like the hot seat to buy or to miss a cherished book.
Realistically it’s always a time to buy and sell. In the early 90s was a time to sell and from 2020-2022 was a definite selling time. Normalcy in this hobby is a constant ebb and flow of books fluctuating normally
When GPA was showing those high prices I genuinely wonder how many dealers were understanding that they didn’t need to have the next record breaking price. GPA sales were the way to go and fair prices when they were making money
Torpedo guy is awesome. I think hes right. I just got an ff1 thinking the same as steve.
good idea to ask salesmen what we should buy
Hi Swag
Saw a couple of dealers I have seen before. Really liked Jamie. You're starting to really get good at this interview stuff. Thanks 😎
03:27 Nerdy Girl Comics has the German Spiderman Version "Die Spinne Nr. 3" on the wall. Nice ;-)
16:50 “Modern keys” 🤔 I imagine since the drop hasn’t effected them, they may have one coming. I would wager it’s gonna be bad too since they seem like the higher risk/reward assets.
As a collector I have learned, it's not worth buying what is hot. You also can't have every comic, so wasting a thousand or more on a slab because it's in a slab is not worth it. The comic you want is out there, you don't need it now. Take your time and look for it. Take care of what you have and don't allow any dealer to talk you into buying what is hot. Read the Overstreet Price Guide to understand the trend, and what is hot. Your comic may not be hot now, but in 30 years it may be. Final thought, l know someone who collected from 1960 and has 28 comic boxes, and someone who has been collecting since 1985 who has 50 comic boxes. Whose boxes do you think l would want?
When investing sensibly:
Time in market beat timing thearket inost cases.
Torpedoe had 2 boxes of keys sitting by themselves on the glass cabinet no one was looking at w crazy low prices i snagged a big stack out of those
Way better questions (than so many of other SDCC related interviews), so THANK YOU for that!
> But it does seem like IMO anyway,, that some of the merchants are alittle tight lipped & or holding back (or maybe didn't pay close attention to what seemed more in demand).
Also More bin divers is Great News for the future! We need More readers to hold people like _Jim "Lazy AF" Lee_ to A higher standard (e.g. HUSH was 20 years ago). What's DC's Publishing President & CCO. _Jim Lee-_ drawn or done since HUSH? Besides covers, All-Star B&R, New52 JL Origin & 4 Suicide Squad comics. And of course greenlit one to many terrible ideas!
good vid
i like this format ...you do a very good job with these old heads
i love Brad, hes always my favorite
I almost bought a gsx #1 I took the money and put in into bullion instead.
Where's a good place to check prices online?
As an old timer here is my advice after suffering through the late 1980s-2010s in this hobby: ONLY BUY stuff you REALLY REALLY LIKE because you could be stuck with it for a while. Be picky, get GRAILS and KEYS at VERY HIGH GRADES and make sure they are somewhat SCARCE! Those are my rules of thumb when accumulating comics. Those will always hold value even if they decline somewhat. This could be a once in lifetime opportunity with a political climate that seems to purposely want to tank the US economy. Yes, you could be stuck with these for another 8-10 years if that party stays in power but like the late 1980's-2015 i suffered through it eventually stabilizes (yes you can make money flipping comics in bad recessions) and comes to an end and you will reap rewards. Oh, and NEVER EVER SELL YOUR BEST GRAILS until another 2020-21 comes along unless you ABSOLUTLEY NEED THE MONEY.
Dealer that said young comic collectors will continue to keep industry alive. I never seen a collector under the age of 40 in my LCS.
Which 15-25 can afford $5.99-$9.99 on a new book?
should ask these guys about the Indi Books, like Isom of the Rippaveres, Cyberfrog ,Inglorious Rex, and other comicsgate books
lol Bob from high grade comics with the jokes. 😂
Did you stop by marvel x Veve booth and asked questions on there digital collectables? They look great
Sellers are having some higher than market prices because they are upside down on books they got into last year. So they are trying to minimize their loss
High Grade never has prices posted so he gets lower foot traffic than the rest. People want to see numbers before asking to see the book. No one want to keep asking “how much is this?” However he’s never changed this so I guess it works for him.
Recognize bedrock comics from CZcamsr Dave vintage past present comics very interesting.
Swag palms was itching to ask nerdy girl about that book 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Chur from new zealand swag my bro, wtb some of that elveen action though hah😅
such speculation, it's easy to see how a bubble can form with comics. Everyone expects the price to keep rising and rising
Comic dealers THINK their con buyers are okay with them using 2021 sold prices.
The two main conventions here in Sydney, Australia are ruined each year because there's so much focus on film and streaming - comics barely get a look-in. That's why I won't attend, preferring the small local collectors' fairs which are much friendlier and heavily comics-focused.
Undertaker at 17:06
It’s a buyer’s market, the market is in a major slump and who knows when it will turn around again. I sold my entire collection just before the bubble of 2021. And I predicted that it would tank. Unless they start making good movies, the market will keep on struggling in 24.
Hey. How come you only ask dealers? Why not customers?
That’s a good point … hey Swag what do you think?
Some of these dealers are straight up slimy
Comics will always be here they won't go anywhere there's always going to be ups and downs like everything in life. Nothing to be worrying about.
Yes, Comics will always be here. But whether or not they're worth something, a completely different subject
@@christophertomasello1227 yes they will be worth something it's no different than stocks. In addition comics fall in a similar category as rare pieces of art. The more rare the book is it holds its value better. I'm not going to panic sell or get assimilated into a heard mentality. I don't care if my books drop in value, cause it'll go up eventually again at some point.
One Piece would outsell every other comic book at this event btw
@@Awesomemt2018 I personally dont care, in addition I hate one piece, I don't care for the story and the art style is junk. There are a ton of animes personally that I like better than 1 piece.
@@daimons7261 As if the current Marvel/Dc offerings have good art those days...
Wish you would have asked what they felt about the digital comic world....like "veve" the biggest digital platform that's going global...
So do you get better deals @comic conventions?
Should’ve asked her what she thinks about people jumping line for a acetate cover. Us at C2E2 haven’t forgotten!!!!
It’s not a joke…LCS’ in my area have last years prices
