Are you Singing Too Loudly? | The Acoustic Reflex |

  • How do you go with your singing output levels? Are you like me, needing to always manage and measure the tendency to over sing? The acoustic reflex might be to blame.
    Here on the Voice Essentials channel, I’m often asked, “Dr Dan, how can I learn to sing louder?” For some, that’s an important question. But there are those who walk among us who actually need to ask the exact opposite question: “Dr Dan, how can I learn to sing quieter?”

    Loud singer here. I've been singing native songs for 25+ years. Most of the songs I sing are meant to be sung loud. We generally sing in groups around a big drum or each with a hand drum. And since there are often newbies who are bit shy, I find singing loud can help them break the ice easier as the focus isn't just on them.
    I used to often blow my voice out after only a few songs as I knew very little about singing, good resonance, twang, etc. Nowadays, I think I can sing even louder, but with better resonance and less strain. Thanks in part to you and your videos, Dr. Dan. Thanks!

    I tend to sing too loud and now I'm working on shifting at the right time in the right register. It's quite hard because I still have the tendency to push the high notes. The key is practise and know your mistakes and be patient. :)

    Dear Dr. Dan! I thought you red my mind when I received the info that you had published your latest video. I was just searching through all your footages for the ones about singing softer and controlling the air pressure to avoid tension on the larynx. I am working on this at the moment. I sing too loud, yes! Should you be able to add some more exercises on this specific subject it would be absolutely wonderful. One last think. I have been studying for quite a few years now between here in Australia (my new country) and Italy (but I am not a professional). Well! I love your scientific approach to teaching singing. That's what most of the teachers and coaches around do miss: they just tell you what to do without no explanation. I just love what you do, and how you are able to give detailed theoretical justifications to your suggestions and exercises. I appreciate that you often compare different approaches of different experts. I do get any suggestion you put in your videos about different theories, studies or researches on various topics and make them mine: to then go and search for those references and study in depth.. even more! THANKS!

    Thank you for making this video on an overlooked topic! I’ve struggled tremendously with this. I self-accompany on the piano for all of my singing, and have always felt like “the piano was beating me” in volume. It wasn’t until I placed my phone elsewhere in the room, and recorded myself in an ambient space, that I realized that, even at softer singing volumes, I was actually louder than the piano. This helped me relax in my feeling that I had to keep up with the piano volume. I’m addition, my vocal teacher had me purchase a tuning fork, and place it on several parts of my head and face, so that I could feel the effects of bone conduction in hearing. This step, helped me trust that I was getting all of the acoustic information I need for accurate pitch, even though the piano still sounds louder than my voice. These two things helped me greatly! And, of course, your scientific explanation of why it’s “a thing”! Thanks again!

      @DrDanRobinson  Před 11 měsíci +1

      You're welcome, and thank you for sharing your insightful experiences! It's wonderful to hear that you've found strategies to overcome the challenges you were facing with the piano's volume and pitch accuracy. Your vocal teacher's use of a tuning fork and your own practical application are excellent examples of innovative approaches to voice training. Keep up the great work, and feel free to reach out if you have any more questions or insights. Happy singing!

    I know when I sing softer...I have better control, quality and sounds generally better.
    If I'm trying to reach the same level as someone else...then I can feel the force in my vocal chords.
    I have noticed I talk a lot quieter as well. I have friends that are singers that sing loud and talk loudly. Any thoughts would be great!

  • @genereybradley

    I also wonder if there is a phase cancellation going on when singing into a mic. We have two, the production and reception that are fairly close and wondered if there is any work on that.

    • @genereybradley
      @genereybradley Před 6 lety

      That thought came from a conversation we at band practice, lead vocalist says she can't hear herself. The rest of us are pushing to be heard through her. I got me thinking about what is happening real-time internally. Is the a phase cancellation happening when we sing amplified that we don't experience say just sing without support.

    To be completely honest, my problem isn't either problem (although my mom and dad have both joked, rather appropriately, that I don't always need a microphone) my problem is sharpness when I belt (and I don't always mean sharp notes) and flatness when I sing quietly (and I don't always mean flat notes like b flat or a flat, etc.) what do I do?

    • @mattmallecoccio8378

    I only know how to sing loud because I took Choir in High School for 6 years and they also told me my voice stood out amongst the others and treated it as a positive thing. I had and still have crippling self esteem so when I sing I hyperfocus and get lost in it and use too much power into my notes and can never get a good recording ever.

  • @singwisevocals
    @singwisevocals Před 6 lety +3

    I always find it concerning when choir directors ask their quieter members to raise their loudness to match that of the more robust voices. If young Me had been asked to do that - because I was a quiet singer - I probably would have forced and used incorrect technique to manufacture that amplitude, and would have risked making myself hoarse. It's kind of a professionally irresponsible directive when there isn't also a lesson in proper technique to safely and effectively achieve that increase in intensity (e.g., including how to work smarter, not harder). That's why I believe that it's better for the one or two loud singers in the choir to be asked to bring their volume down a bit than to demand that (and place pressure on) the other young and untrained voices in the group bring theirs up.

    • @singwisevocals
      @singwisevocals Před 6 lety +1

      And this doesn't even account for the psychological and emotional battle that quiet singers are often dealing with - how unhealthy their relationships with their voices might already be (and thus why they might be guarding their sound and singing softly to begin with) and how being told that they need to be louder... and then trying unsuccessfully (or painfully) to make that happen... can lead to an even more unhealthy relationship with their voices.

    • @singwisevocals
      @singwisevocals Před 6 lety +1

      Nope (except when my mother didn't want to hear me at all). I know that this video was about NOT feeling the pressure and giving into the temptation to be louder, and I guess I had just wanted to point out the risks in feeling and succumbing to the pressure to be louder.

    quick question when you sing with open vowels are you supposed to or are you going to sound louder? more than if you were to sing a tad bit of closed vowels? i have this musical coming up and in one of the songs i have to hold a G4 for 12 counts and im not sure if i should use more open vowels or not since i feel like im too loud but then again i sing in my bathroom so maybe the echo makes it louder but if you could help thanks!

    • @DrDanRobinson
      @DrDanRobinson  Před 3 lety +1

      Each different vowel will have different levels of volume due to the resonance characteristics of the various vowel shapes. Ideally, with technique, we work towards levelling these differences out so that the voice is more consistent regardless of the vowel shape.

    • @VIDEOHEREBOB
      @VIDEOHEREBOB Před 6 lety

      I have found (after years) the more vowel accuracy you develop the more resonant and rich the voice becomes. You find you have a intensity knob instead of a volume knob. You develop an ability to dial back intensity instead of volume. I also believe there are big voices that require more effort to sound their best.

No microphone needed and still ask to quiet tf down loud. i actually sound kinda good if its wasnt breaking ear drums with how loud it is. i wish i could achieve this state without being so loud but at the same time i only can get to this lvl by having the music VERY loud to encourage me to sing louder and when i finally relax and just belt the hell out of a note i can hit it! if i hold back at all it ruins it falls flat but when i hit the note i hit it to loudly???? idfk anymore.

      @DrDanRobinson  Před rokem

      I'm sorry to hear that your love for singing has been challenged by these circumstances. Social anxiety can be tough, and it's okay to acknowledge how it affects various aspects of your life, including your passion for singing.
      There may be ways you can continue to enjoy singing while managing the anxiety and consideration for others. Consider these possible approaches:
      1. *Sing at specific times:* Speak with the people you live with about your love for singing. You could try to agree on specific times when you can sing freely without disturbing others.
      2. *Soundproofing:* There are affordable options to soundproof a room to minimise the noise others can hear. Egg crate foam, for instance, can be a cost-effective method of reducing sound travel.
      3. *Singing quietly:* There are singing techniques that allow you to sing quieter while still practising your skills. Singing doesn't always have to be loud to be enjoyed or beneficial. You can also explore the art of singing softly, which can be beautiful in its own right.
      4. *Therapy and support groups:* Look into therapy or support groups for social anxiety. Having a space to express your feelings and gain coping mechanisms could be really helpful.
      5. *Outdoor singing:* Consider finding outdoor spaces where you can sing freely, like a secluded spot in a park or an empty beach.
      Remember, singing is about expressing yourself and finding joy. You should never feel guilty about doing what you love. Take small steps, be patient with yourself, and with time, you'll find the right balance that works for you. Stay strong!
