this question gives me anxiety
Thinking about the future does exactly that, creates anxiety. Anytime you allow your mind to spend too much time in the "future", you create an anxiety gap. This is because the future has no guarantees and the mind can't control it, so it gets scared, worried, anxious, etc.
On the flip side, allowing the mind to spend too much time in the past creates sadness, guilt, regret.
The trick is to live in the present.
That being said, I know exactly what you mean.
Your comment was just too perfect for me to not reply. Take care.
@@bafmd Holy shit, most underrated comment I've ever read on youtube. You just changed somebody's outlook on life sir.

No kidding.....just now stumbled across this channel. Legit great content. You got a new subscriber!
noone will ever notice? you haven't met copyright bots.
AWESOME channel! I've subscribed as I find every video thoroughly educational and entertaining. It's such a great thing to get to hear your thought processes and ideas, coming from a guy who's mostly alone in my corner of the songwriting world. It scratches my analytical itch!
Excellent

So as time goes on it must be getting harder to come up with new melodies as well because more and more them have already been used
@Video author
It is not about the all possible good "notes combinations", but about "good notes combinations" that are distinct to each other. Because there can be many melodies that are not the same but very sound-alike. So yeah, we are probably already run out.
I agree. More reason to hear our old loves over and over. That’s why there great 😊
This is my new favourite channel. man! you make so much sense 💙
Thank you! :)
Great content! Thank you for putting time into your videos!
Excellent, but how do I make sure that my melody is original? I'm afraid that I might copy a melody unconsciously. And how do I get over that fear so I can write a song with freedom?
Don't worry about it too much :) As long as you're not willingly stealing, it's fine. You're not gonna get sued unless you write a real hit.
Perfect! Thank you! Your channel is an incredible help to all of us new song writers!
@@Holistic-songwriting basically you said.... don't worry...you are never gonna get a hit song anyway😂😂😂😂😂

I find your videos helpful thxn so much
I wouldnt say that we will run out of melodies. You could make one measure of a particular melody but you in theory could make a melody that stretches for an infinite amount of bars and never repeats. I am referring to all the possibilities between that one measure melody and the infinitely stretching melody. Those possibilities could combine infinitely.
Makes sense to me. As I mentioned before, we seem to also be running out of NEW guitar heroes. No one has really moved guitar in an addicting way, other players want to imitate since Yngwie. Guitar players who can write songs you like, maybe but not a real smoking hot, pure bread, fire breathing, Original Guitar Hero. By the way, is there any software you know of, that can take melodies you program and give theme and variation of them? If so, I want to buy it! I mean if the rules of the game change and you want to try to win, you adapt. lol
Hey Jeff! I've never heard of such a program, but sign me up :) I actually thought about making an app that does that but decided against it - composing should still be a creative challenge. BUT - I'm working on something that kind of does what you want, as in it gives you ideas. Might still be a while before I release this though, I'm still in the testing phase.
Jeff Whitner Have you checked out Misha Mansoor, Tosin Abasi, Javier Reyes, and Devin Townsend?
No I have heard some of the names. I think I will check them out. Thank You!
Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth, Acle Kahney of TesseracT, Frederik Thordendal of Meshuggah, Aaron Marshall of Intervals, Plini, Chon, David Maxim Micic, Piotrek Gruska, Jakub Zytecki, Paul Ortiz of Chimp Spanner, Willie Adler of Lamb of God...
Yep, give me Matt Bellamy over Yngwie any day of the week. Play for the song, don't make the song about you.
Do you have any advice for young song writers like me to make connection with great producers? I am a dutch girl having the dream to become an artist but I feel like I'm all alone in this:(
Hey Lynn, I have a video on this on my channel called "Where can I find a producer" (I think) :)
Sharing!!
Thanks, I appreciate it :)
Also, this:
"The claim that we will run out of melodies or that we are nearing the limit of possible melodies is not accurate. While it is true that certain musical patterns and chord progressions are commonly used in popular music, this does not imply that all possible melodies have been exhausted.
The perception that many songs sound similar today can be attributed to a variety of factors, including cultural trends, market demands, and the influence of successful songs on new compositions. Popular music often follows certain formulas or trends that appeal to a wide audience, leading to similarities in melodies, chord progressions, and production techniques. This can create a sense of familiarity or repetition.
However, it's important to remember that music is a constantly evolving art form, and there is still ample room for innovation and creativity within the realm of melodies. Musicians and composers continue to explore new ideas, experiment with different genres and styles, and incorporate diverse influences into their work.
Moreover, melodies are not solely limited to the Western musical tradition or the standard chromatic scale. Different cultures and musical traditions around the world offer a vast array of unique melodic possibilities that have yet to be fully explored or integrated into popular music.
In conclusion, while certain musical trends may make some songs sound similar, the notion that we are running out of melodies is unfounded. The creative potential of music remains boundless, and there will always be room for new and unique melodies to be discovered and composed."
ChatGPT responded with this:
"The number of possible melodies is virtually infinite. Melodies are sequences of musical notes played one after another, and the possibilities for arranging these notes are vast. The number of potential melodies depends on various factors, including the length of the melody, the range of available notes, the rhythmic patterns used, and the musical style or genre.
To give you an idea of the magnitude, let's consider a simple example. Suppose we have a melody consisting of only eight notes, and each note can be chosen from a standard Western chromatic scale (12 possible pitches). In this case, the number of possible melodies would be 12^8, which is approximately 68.7 million.
However, this calculation doesn't account for other musical elements such as rhythm, dynamics, articulation, and phrasing, which greatly expand the possibilities. Additionally, if we consider longer melodies or incorporate more complex musical elements, the number of potential melodies becomes astronomically large.
It's important to note that not all possible combinations of notes would necessarily be considered musically pleasing or meaningful. Musical composition involves making artistic choices and adhering to certain rules and conventions that help create coherent and aesthetically pleasing melodies.
In summary, while the number of possible melodies is technically infinite, the practical limitations of human creativity, musical conventions, and the desired aesthetic qualities of the melody narrow down the choices to a more manageable and meaningful range."
BUT Shazam will tell us that the melody already exists !

too good
We got a few new ones.
The future of music will be of a combination of space , time , placement of instruments ( geometry) and where you are within this . Feeling music. I have done this . Everything is a wave vibrating out. Even on the quantum level. I promise you I have experienced this.
Reply to video not yet uploaded: Not sure...it's actually not let me watch the video or view/reply to comments on it now soo...
But given the exponentially immense number of combinations, and the ever-evolving nature of what music is considered popular that allows music to continue exploring potentially all of those combinations indefinitely... it seems like, in a practical sense, we will TECHNICALLY run out of melodies, but the melodies that begin to literally straight-up copy old melodies will be copying melodies that are so antiquated and old, that no one will notice or care. Imagine centuries of music going by. Imagine someone accidentally rips off a melody from a famous song 800 years ago. In some cases that may be recorded and it may be obvious. But mostly, we don't keep as big an internal catalog of centuries old music in our collective minds as we do more recent music. Hope that makes sense.
Very smart! I was going to say something similar.
👍
Knowing the amount of possible time signatures out there, we've still got a lot to spare.
I want to live long enought to see 43/177 become a common time signature

Any songwriters that would like to discuss and/or share songs back and forth. Or just want an ally in the music world. Hit me up.
Changing tonal shape doesn't change the melody...
Joshua Hamm You don’t get it...
Average song has no more than 5-7 notes in first 2 bars of chorus, and those notes have span of 5-7 tones. So we ran out of melodies long ago. If you write a song melody similar to another one nobody cares. But if your song becomes a hit, there is a good chance someone will sue you for millions. That's how this business weird is
Fellow songwriters! Anybody want to collab?
Wow this is sad
A computer would know that though...one owned by lawyers or the RIAA...
Thats why most metal band play almos same riffs over and over again
What about the fact that music has infinite permutations, and is not just a "melody" thing? How about the fact your knowledge is limited.
that is a very good analyse, but accoding to all those goofy stupid so called trap producers out there, it seams like melody i infinite looool. they dont even know what is a motif or patterne, the just put bunch of small randum notes with bunch of reverb et 808 and cry " i make a fire beat thoo"
What I'm pissed off most about, is that I've wasted 3.31 of my life watching this. Plus another 10 writing this
