  • The Advent Calendar Project: At the Feet O' Jesus - Florence Price
    All Saints Parish, Brookline, MA
    Director of Music: Stephan Griffin
    Mezzo-soprano: Emerald Barbour
Written in 1930, Feet O’ Jesus is the first from a set of “Two Songs” by Florence Price with text by poet Langston Hughes.
Born in Little Rock, Arkansas and after studying organ and piano at the New England Conservatory of Music, Florence Beatrice Price spent much of her life composing in Chicago. She won first prize in the Wanamaker Competition, earning a world premiere of her Symphony No. 1 in E Minor by the Chicago Symphony in June 1933. This made her the first African-American woman to have a major work performed and premiered by an American symphony orchestra. Price composed for the organ, piano, chamber group, orchestra, and voice.
Many thanks to Soloist Emerald Barbour and Director of Music Stephan Griffin.
