Sonic 4 - Mad Gear Act 2 - Escape the Cog Trap

  • I'm honestly not too sure what is meant by this title--there are most definitely cogs here, and they make up the bulk of the new gimmicks, but I don't really see any traps around. Well, not one singular trap that makes up the stage.
The first new feature you'll see are, well, cogs. There are large brown cogs Sonic can use as essentially oddly shaped platforms. They'll slowly spin around, and Sonic can fall off if he stays in one place for too long. These things could easily be mistaken for a background element, just one that makes noise, but the first set has Sonic land on them to let you know that these are indeed things Sonic can interact with.
The next thing you'll see are long rectangular platforms that go in and out of walls when Sonic pushes a button. Well, some of them are like that. Some are also turned 90 degrees and will function as walls to block Sonic's way unless he pushes a button to retract them. These platforms and walls will go back to their original positions after several seconds, so Sonic has to do what he does best and act fast.
You'll also see even larger gears: Sonic can stand on these and travel along the gear's path by running left or right. Some have a horizontal track; others are vertical. You'll see the game has a habit of putting Asterons and Slicers (and later, Shellcrackers) along the apth, as Sonic moves pretty slowly on them at first.
Lastly, there are now conveyor belts with platforms on them. The belts themselves Sonic doesn't interact with. You basically treat them like vertically moving platforms, except they flip over once they reach the top or bottom. All of these gimmicks, by the way, were in Metropolis in Sonic 2 (16-bit), except the gears on tracks Sonic runs on to move.
All in all, this makes Act 2 quite the gimmicky stage, and kind of a slow-paced one as there's a lot of waiting and gear-shuffling going on. I'm sure a more experienced Sonic 4 player can make this place seem blazing fast, however.
At the end is what seems to be a repeat of the steam vent thing at the end of Act 1, except with springs this time because the steam vent gimmick is not in this one.

@AchmeZe No, they can't. Not even if you clip through them, which is pretty weird.

This was played on the Wii. The official soundtrack exists, and I think it's currently avaialble on iTunes.
