Usually the most common issue with these is the motor shaft gear (9,or 10 tooth) gets a little tiny split in it, causing the gear not turn properly. This explains why the head was making a loud buzzing sound. There's nothing to turn the gears inside. It's a pretty simple fix if you know how to fix it. If you would like to fix your singing fish, check out my channel and look for the video called "how to repair your singing fish's head". Same goes for the tail, and mouth

Ahoyhoy! I used to de latexify toys like this to see how they work. when I was a kid, my parents saw my fascination with learning how animatronics worked as a toy breaking phase and sadly most did get thrown away. I actually like having broken shabby looking animatronics , it adds character to the look!

    Hi Mr. Pete, All,
At 15:57, there is a small vertical circuit board right above your thumb that has a black blob on it. Under that black blob is likely one or more integrated circuits such as a microprocessor, and or digital to analog converter. That's the conductor of the whole show. Everything else, resistors, capacitors, transistors, wires, appears like common off the shelf parts you could get from an electronics supplier such as Digi-Key. The arrangement of all of the parts, the position of each part's lead holes, and the shaping of the each part's leads, makes me fairly certain that these parts were assembled by hand to the circuit board. The circuit board per se is of the least expensive "brown board" variety, where copper traces are only found on one side, and jumper wires were used if needed on the top side to complete the circuit routing.

The black epoxy / die combo is known as COB "chip on board". It's the cheapest way of adding an IC to anything in large volumes. Usually reliable, it's basically impossible to repair if anything goes wrong.

If you pause at the 16:01 minute mark you will see that big black dot of epoxy on the left of the mother board. Under that is the chip that has not only the sound but the programming that controls the whole thing. They epoxy the chip to keep it "protected". Basically so you can't steal the code/music. Fun video!

That was a nice catch, Lyle! The biggest largemouth bass I ever caught was only 10#, but that isn't too shabby for an IL farm pond. Anyway, I would have thought that Jordan would be interested in the gears, motors, and electronic components for some projects since he has you for guidance and inspiration. Unfortunately, far too many of the youth today would rather be playing video games instead of making something cool, which the demise of the shop classes contributes to. I hope you and your family have a merry Christmas!

well i thought they were using servo motors but now i am curious how they protected those DC motors from overcharging for example when the mouth is fully open or the body is fully rotated ; the motor is still on but it doesn't rotate that's why we keep hearing that buzzing sound . i think they are using some current limiting circuit and i need some schematics LOL.
by the way ,i think that black thing under the red button is a motion sensor, that's why when you moved your hand over it(at 3:10) or when you flicked your knife it started moving.

And...on that circuit Board...at one side, with the 7-8 contacts...a tiny metal 'heat-sink' with a dab of black epoxy....under that epoxy is a small integrated circuit that has a bit of built-in 'memory' that controls everything and generates the 'music'....similar stuff can be found in cheap digital watches and 'musical' toys...I even found a similar circuit inside the red LED flashing light for my bicycle...

You can play the songs on youtube, I do it all the time on my other channel. All that happens is you MIGHT lose the ability to monetize the particular video in question. since you don't own the rights to the song. But in this instance I doubt the algorithm will detect your song since they're not the originals. Both the originals were performed by The Talking Heads and Bobby McFerrin respectively.

A motherboard is a board which has a daughter board associated to her. That looks more like she is an orphanboard. Incidentally I would called it a "mobo" just because it sounds cool, but been a expansionless mobo why not just call it a PCB? ... Boy! It was hard to write all that stuff and avoid the software trying to correct my spelling al every single word. It would have made this comment understandable. Marry Christmas to you Lyle and everyone one else too.

One of the electronics guys where I worked opened one of those THAT WAS EASY buttons, from Staples, and reprogramed it with a few different phrases. The guys I worked with were, for the most part, a rough crowd, so you can imagine. One of the modified buttons would repeat several different phrases, at random. The foreman special button said "Get back to work" and "WXX do you want?" and I'M GONG TO KICK YOUR XXX."

+mrpete222 what you thought was an earphone jack is actually a sensor that would turn Billy on when he saw someone near him. Enjoyed your funnies.
