I like a fresh look on machinery so am not overly concerned with the color. I know, not much help.
Hi Mr Pete maybe if you remove the screw plate there might be some good paint under it then bring it to a body shop that mix their own paint they can match it . Good luck . JM
If it says "Chicago" they only made them up to 1957, After that they moved to Schiller Park. If you remove the jaw all of the way out there might be a flat spot the a date is stamped. Some people stay that was the date it was made others say that that is the end of the 5 year warranty. Some do not have any date stamped on it. As to the paint, I found that a vise from the 80's, the best match is blue Hammerite from Krylon. or Rustoleum Verde Green for an older one. Hope this help a little bit.
👍👍
Maybe the company (Sunland? Transmission) the lady foreman from the box worked for, has some link with the plexiglas model... 🤔
I guess it may be some sort of college/university project? or a teaching/training equipment, or may be used by sales representatives to demonstrate oil additives or a similar product? Perhaps? just a guess.
Nice little vise! I suspect the remnants if paint still on it aren't the original color-oil and grime have darkened it over the years. I would paint it any color you like that protects the metal and prevents rust, and then put it to use as its makers intended.
Mr. Pete. Thanks for another excellent video! I have the MR-20G which is similar to your 13B model, except it grinds up to 3/4" drills. For all my drills I now grind them all to 135 degrees and split the points. What I've found with the movable pins is their position controls how much is ground away on the heel of the drill. I change the pin position from smaller to larger bits and it seems that a bit more needs to ground away on the larger drills vs the smaller drills. Once you have used split point drills, you'll never go back to any other type!! One comment about hand grinding drills. I know lots of people seem to think they can hand grind drills perfectly well. I say that's not true. My brother worked as a fabricator for over 20 years and can hand grind drills with the best of them, but as he says, 'he can make bits cut', but that's far from satisfactory if you're being critical. I can also hand grind drills successfully, but after grinding all the drills that he and I have (probably more than 500), he and i were both shocked about how uneven most of the hand-ground drills were and how much better they drilled after sharpening on of these machines. The holes were much, much closer to diameter, more even and took much less pressure to drill. Again, an excellent video! Keep up the good work!
👍👍👍👍
That gray looks a lot like the Massey-Ferguson gray they sell at Tractor Supply.
"They are only original once"! In other words : you can restore it at any time so just be sure you want to before you begin. I personally like some objects restored and others left alone. It is up to the owner to decide!
🖖. I worked in two very old factories. Everywhere you looked, battleship grey. I like battleship grey for the vise.
If you wanted a paint match, home depots in my area have a fancy paint machine that can accurately go from dried paint on the can to new paint. In sure they could work with a chip of paint too. You might try them.
Mr. Pete, you asked for help. You sir-are beyond help. If I were a psychologist or a hypnotist I might be of help, but I am not. Carry on.
Thanks for sharing 👍
Mr. Pete, thank you for being such a treasure. I have been a machinist for over 40 years and have spent the last 40 years working in aerospace. One of the processes in our facility is a plating line to coat various metals in various special coatings for a wide range of applications to our product. We do a process of plating called barrel plating. We are able to plate a large number of small parts at once through this process. The plexiglass 'Transmission' looks a lot like a barrel plating transmission. A small motor would be attached to the out shaft and be driven by "plastic gears" to rotate the barrel that would be attached to the underside the box. The copper bar across the top is used to feed the current through the barrel and the solution. I'm not sure this is what this is, but it looks a lot like the transmissions boxes we use to drive the barrels.
Thanks
I would take the vise to a paint supply store like a PPG store that makes paint for body shops. They may be able to match also some can make you spray cans of this for your convenience. As far as the transmission it may be a teaching aid to show customers how they work in a repair shop.
I painted everything thing i ever had machinery gray.
Hi Lyle, I would just give the vice a thorough cleaning and leave the old patina.
Clean up but don't paint.
100$ i would pay for the Kennedy tool box
Perhaps cleaning up the Wilton and just apply a clear coat to protect from rust? Satin finish perhaps. There are also some "interesting" suggestions about "Best color for a Wilton machinist vise" over the internet... Fuchsia... That way it stands out... - Steve W. I'm leaning toward puce myself as paisley would be a bit difficult to do. Art - Artemus I like gloss white with a red pinstripe. Lots of folks are fixated on depressing gray. Some like blue. Zebra stripes might be nice. Suit yourself. - Ecnerwal I repainted a Wilton vise last winter. I replicated the factory color with hammertone light blue. It is available online or thru McMaster Carr. - bob_1fs
Thinking 60's. Pontiac. Old's engine paint was that shade
Mabe you can try to mix a bit of green into the grey in a small cup to get a match
I really appreciate you mentioning not painting the letters on the Wilton. I know it can be easily removed, but just looks tacky to me. My vote is use a little degreaser, a rag and finally some wax on it. The good condition used, but stable look is always the best look to me!
I agree and that’s what I’m going to do
@@mrpete222 Can’t wait to see it!
Mr. Pete, I just bought the same toolbox for the same reason. It even had a couple Starrett scales (12 & 24") and some other random tools for $45.
👍😄
North Bay Party Rentals, Ontario Canada? It fits, maybe they know.
Take your little Vis to the paint store and have the little robot look at it and mix ya a color.
On the paint color, you could take the vise down to a paint and body shop, or paint and body supply shop and get them to color match it. I would also recommend sealing it with epoxy primer before spraying paint if you go that route. The epoxy primer is really good at sticking to old paint and provides a good surface for the new paint to adhere to. I realize this is not a cheap option though. A cheaper option you might could get it mixed in a spray can and ask them if there is a spray can primer they recommend. I think some O Riley’s even do that. Good luck with what ever you do!
Like you said it looks unfinished, the extra gear might be for reverse
$6,000 for a 2" Wilton vise is a sure sign of mental illness. The same seller also sold a 3" Wilton on the same day for $1,500. That's a good day. I am convinced that we spend way more time thinking about color than the tool manufacturers did back in that period. I remember it being important to be sure you bought enough paint to finish a house at one time because if you had to go back and get more it would not match.
What about the VEVOR MR-20G? More sizes and more split point/web thinning type options?
Wilton vise , maybe try using some rubbing and polishing compound to see how much color will come back? Just a thought.
Hey Mr Pete I thought of you the other day when I saw a video about B17 radial engines what a cutaway job
👍
Hi Mr. Pete, Wilton moved from Chicago to Shiller Park in 1957. so your Baby bullet is a little older than you think. When they moved, they would have used up the "Chicago" castings, so yours could have been made in Shiller Park. The way to tell the date is to remove the jaw and look on the key at the bottom. Unless it was tampered with, the date will be stamped at the bottom. For a few years in the 50's, Wilton put the guarantee expiration date. This would be marked "GAUR EXP XX", XX being the year the guarantee would expire of course. Wilton had a 5 year guarantee so you would subtract 5 from the date stamped. With the exception of the few years in the 50's, the year stamped would be the year it was shipped. I think they stamped them just before they shipped out. I have a 3 inch vice that is stamped "GAUR EXP 60" so, it was shipped in 55.
Thanks
Is the Plexiglass gear transmission for demonstrating motor oil viscosity? Lucas oil use to give these to auto parts stores to place on the counter. They would have a light coat of oil on the gears and customers could crank the gears and watch how well the oil stuck to the gears.
That's not a bad idea. I remember smaller ones. Maybe this was for a tractor or semi dealer?
I remember the Lucas display
Greetings. Maybe consider bringing the vice to a place like Ace Hardware, that can scan colors for matching the paint. I think places like Menards and Home Depot provide the same services.
You may not have a need or use for the Kennedy tool box, but it certainly is not junk!
Thanks mr pete just looks like a teaching aid the box is from a transmition shop .as for the vice if its not to rusty bring it in and have the color matched or just shine it up looks good the way it is .
Lyle - Well, there is an outfit in North Bay, ON that supplies tents to rental companies. Maybe it's an import from our Northern cousins. A good 'what is it' for this weekend. But then you said you were told the original tool box owner worked at a transmission manufacturer? We'll have to wait until Paul Harvey gives us the 'rest of the story'.
You could have it matched at Napa and have them put in an aerosol can for you.
I would clean up the small Wilton vise, and keep it as is. It seems to be in acceptable original condition. It is only original condition once.
Nice video,mrpete.Thank you.
TAG. ====North Day Party Rental
I was thinking North Bay
North Bay Party Rental. Found an ad for them in some California newspaper from 1986. Thats all.
Mr Pete, the tag says _North Bay Party Rental._ What a party rental place is using it for I'm not sure but it's definitely says North Bay Party Rental, it's the only thing that fits the letter shapes that make any sense. As far as what it's for maybe they were using it as some kind of winch/reel. That would partly explain why there's a gap in the gearing, but that's just guess. 👍👍
Probably a conversation piece for mechanics and machinists conventions lol
I read the label as NORTH DAY PARTY RENTAL.
I got North Bay Party Rental, but it could be Day also. From the shape it has to be either the letter B, D, R, or P and words Bay and Day are the only two that would make sense for a name.
When I get a tool all I do is clean it up because it shows the history the tool.
looks like a model of a 2 or three speed aux trans from a large trck
I'm going with natural, like its new owner.
Morning Lyle
NORTH BAY PARTY RENTAL?
My guess as well
Party Dental? Have a blast with your root canal?
