In 2023, the global video game industry was valued at $214.2 billion. The film industry was valued at $92.5 billion and music was valued at $28.6 billion in the same time period. Video games are worth nearly double film and music combined and, based on current trends, that lead will only increase

Hmmmm.... the numbers I got for 2011 were from the book "Jacked" about GTA. I got the numbers on the contemporary film + TV industry were from this website, which claims that film is sitting at $285 billion worldwide
      www.thebusinessresearchcompany.com/report/film-and-video-market#:~:text=The%20global%20film%20and%20video,at%20a%20rate%20of%206.47%25.
Might be a bum source, but it seemed right to me that film would boomerang back with global markets and international revenues. I could also see that number being wrong too though and video games staying on top!

@@RememberShuffle To be fair, it's every bit as possible that my source could be wrong too. As I've done further research, I'm finding conflicting numbers. Doesn't really matter though, all of the people who make the products that bring them all these record-high numbers will be downsized to make the number look bigger next year. So it goes.

I wonder if your point about the benefits of having some kind of outsider quality towards being a comedian is why there are so many Indian American comedians despite how small a proportion of Americans they make up. And this despite the fact that it's a community whose parents push them to only become doctors and engineers-as I'm told over and over again by said comedians.

Good ep as per fellas, although I strongly disagree on GTA IV being the worst one.
I'd argue that it's the best one on atmosphere, story and just general aesthetic alone but it's in an awkward position- it clashes with the prior games, being a poe-faced crime drama about the value of revenge and mortality, trying to outrun your past and the lie of the american dream and capitalism's virtues. I'd argue it does a lot of what San Andreas does, the similar stories about people and their families in horrible conditions created by capital, corruption, etc having their hands forced, but it still has goofy elements to counter-act it. Like fucking hell they're both pretty similar. Except IV doesn't have the car DDR game. I think the main gripe comes from how thick they lay on the atmosphere.
Man I'm going fucken nowhere with this but GTA IV does a lot of the same shit as San Andreas. Without GTA SanAn & IV I don't think we'd have the Red Dead Redemption games be as good as they are.
If you're taking reccomendations: there's a small youtube channel called Middleside Topwise who do some very good analyses of the GTA games, their themes and politics. Trust me they're very good, insanely well done.

Ben here, I had no idea I was stepping on such a land mine with this take haha!
GTA IV, like all GTA games, is obviously a masterpiece, I'd never dispute that! For me though, I really like the wackiness and zaniness of the GTA franchise - the shameless embracing of over-the-top excess (Jet packs, the silly GTA V heist where you're wearing the Hurt Locker Bomb defusing suit and your crew gets mini-guns, literally doing the final scarface scene but instead you get to win). I got huge respect for the story they were telling in GTA IV, and the writing in that game remains top notch, the vibe just wasn't for me. As a love letter to NY though, 10/10.
And yeah, you're 100% correct that for me it's the fact that the atmosphere is laid on SO thick. Kind of reminds me of "The Great Gatsby," a book we teach to high schoolers because it's real "cards on the table," about what it's about. Still a great game, still a massive feat of human endeavour, just different strokes for different folks!
