Something interesting I learned with the Frankenstein monster in the 40s is that in official color posters or photos his skin isn’t green, it’s a pale yellow
The main reason people think the monster is green was because Jack Pierce used green greasepaint on Karloff to give him an unnatural appearance on B&W film. Had the film been made in color, the yellow would have been more realistic, giving it a sickly pallor like bruised flesh.
His skin is also yellow in the novel.
Colorized Universal Monster films look interesting in color. But, honestly, I still prefer the black and white prints. More nostalgic and mythical.
It makes since considered the creature’s skin is translucent yellow in the novel.
I’ve always thought the monster’s skin would be grey. I’ll soon be reading the book for the first time; I borrowed it from the public library.
I'm glad these colorized snippets seem pretty accurate to the time period (especially the Bride's REAL hair color). It also shows the true genius of these makeup designs, which is of course due to mainly Jack Pierce, the grandfather of makeup alongside Lon Chaney. Even in color, they all look great and honestly, the color doesn't take away from the old masks and makeup at all.
What a difference between BW and color. Bela Lugosi’s Dracula still looks creepy even color. Brilliantly done.

The first scene with Lugosi where he grimaces, he looks like he crapped his pants, that's why he's grimacing
We all clearly love the original black and white films. But this was a real treat. Nicely done.
If they had color back then they would have used it. I am 70 and those old films looked like crap. Thanks to colorization we can get an idea what they could have been.

@@danstvguy a lot of them had the option to do color, it was just extremely expensive to do a colored film at the time, a dollar per second of film, that may not sound like much but consider the fact that on average each movie is at least an hour long, that's an extra 3600 dollars just for it to be a color film, and then you also have consider that it's 3600 old dollars, imagine how much that is today
Yeah i still love the Monsters in black and white but surprisingly this was okay but at the same time I will watch the Monsters in black and white any day.

I love the black and white versions but the color versions absolutely bring them to life and make them feel so much closer to our age. I love it!
Whoever did this is a genius. The colourization is literally perfect. Especially Creature from the Black Lagoon.
This could help make more modern audiences give the old Universal Monsters a chance. As a long time fan, this is incredible!

Agreed regarding the Monster’s coloring- the green is too much. But love the Bride- the red hair looks great and is evidently accurate!
The Monster was NEVER green . Jack Pierce clearly stated the the Monster was a Steel Grey color. The green is something that people imagined. Even in the book, he is described as having Yellowish translucent skin.
@@Valkonnen Karloff's makeup was green but there was a good reason for that. When filmed in black and white, it gave the monster a very pale look.
I've never liked when later versions of it would show him as green. It's almost like they think that's how they wanted him to look.
I always thought the green was too silly. The guys made of decomposing body parts, I think a pale grey tone would be more accurate (like we see with the Bride) than make him a weird version of the Hulk
@@Mycroft9 :: I really love black&white ( gray ) movies, no matter what the theme. The Bride of Frank is not only the best horror-film, it's one of the greatest films ever ... Lanchester was beautiful in the black&white version, but in color, she was even more striking.
As cool as it is to see these clips in colour, I think it really shows how adept these filmmakers were at working with the medium of black and white. The clips are a lot more moody and gothic in their original monochrome, it works so well tonally.
I've never seen such good colorized work. I would love to see these movies in color.

As much as I love the original black and white, your work on these shows how fantastic classic monsters in color could be. I never want to lose the originals, but I'd love to add full length colorized versions of these to my collection!

Seeing these in colour makes them new again. Very nice! Pretty good SFX too, for movies from 70 to nearly 100 years ago.
I wish universal would actually release these films like this. It adds so much life, and these films could reach a new audience
If that put time and money into it it could look even better. Have them as double bills as many are only a bit over an hour long.

The scene with the Frankenstein monster and Maria at the lake looked particularly good. It looked as if it could have been filmed yesterday. Colorization has come a long way.
I think they should make them in color but keep the black and whites available to anybody who prefers the original versions. But damn this was amazing and breathes new life into the classics
Perhaps a dvd or Blu ray where you could choose to either watch them in color or black and white.

Very well done! You know, I was always sure the Frankenstein monster wasn't green, but a ghastly yellowish white, and the creature appears whitish in this video. I'm so glad you included the original Phantom of the Opera and Nosferatu. Both great films!
I grew up watching the black and whites and I love them, if they made them in color would I buy them? yes that looked good, I was really surprised how good some of them looked
"Some of them" ? Name them ! Karloff as the Monster becomes clownish after this process, his Bride isn't better, Mr Hyde (Fredric March) seems nauseous, etc.

The original, classic monster movies those were done beautifully with the color added just a beautifully done job. The music too really gives off a great sense of the atmosphere.
I became aware of the Universal monsters in 1963 when I was five years old. I have been watching them, on film, since I was seven---when my mother finally deemed me old enough to see them. All of the scenes you have included here have been long familiar to me, but the colorization makes them so much sharper and more immediate---especially that most heartbreaking and gutwrenching scene so brilliantly performed by Boris Karloff and Marilyn Harris. And bookending the whole video with Van Sloan's speech from the Prologue of Frankenstein was a brilliantly amusing touch. Thank you for posting this wonderful artwork.
First let me say how much I hate how people use the word “amazing” so often…but….THIS WAS AMAZING! I love these old movies and watch them whenever I can….if there was a whole week were they played one of these colorized movies at a local theater every day, I would go the entire week to see them all. Popcorn and a coke every day….The music played during this added to the allure of these snippets. Thank you…..

All I can say is WOW!! Seeing these classic monsters in color brings a new depth to the films. I so wish all these classics would get the colorization treatment. Which could.bring future generations to appreciate these well loved films.
Wow these colors are insane! Makes everything so spooky yet really cool, I love how they created everything like this even though it was shown in black and white. I guess black and white really suits frankensteins feeling.

The Universal Horrors are awesome. I can't believe how scary Frankenstein and his Bride and Dracula are in color!! Audiences in the 1940s wouldn't have been able to watch them!!
I've somehow, amazingly, never heard of Mad Love-need to watch that pronto.
A dream come true all these films being shown colorized could bring on a new audiences to watch these films again and audience will always seen these will watch one more time, please bring these films back in color a new experience.

This is as spot on as it gets. I feel like Frankenstein could be slightly less green and the saturation on the scar isnt real realistic, but otherwise everything else seems perfect!
You’re not going to get spot on coloring. Film back then was different and interpreted colors much differently. Colorized film of that era was over saturated, look at Wizard of Oz. That movie is colorful as hell
I thought about it. To have a green monster it would be best to colorize in the aesthetic of Mario Bava. THE rest of the scenery should be impressionistic in use of colour. Kill Baby Kill or Argentino's Inferno. (Mario Bava did set design and lighting etc). The movie ultimately looks best in black and white but the green Frankenstein is great to see.
I always find it amusing how many people think the Frankenstein monster is supposed to be green when in fact the real reason he was painted with green makeup was the unnatural appearance it gave him in the B&W filmstock. In my opinion, had the film been made in color a more realistic look would have been a pale yellowish tan, like bruised flesh.

@@LarryFleetwood8675 Ironically, The Hulk is only green because the printer couldn't make him consistently gray.

I concur with everybody, it's an absolute treat to see these classic monsters in color. As some one else just commented, it seems to work best on "The Creature from the Black Lagoon," which truly does look amazing. Love this stuff!!!

Very interesting to see what these classics would have looked like in color. Although the Frankestein monster really was green, in order to appear pale white in the B&W film, I don't believe he was supposed to actaully be green in the film. The music was approriate and dramatic as well.

Found this video very interesting and most of the clips looked well. As technology gets better so will the ability to create more "real" colourisation in HD and it will look awesome.
However the gothic atmosphere was created so well because they were working with black and white and I feel if we change to colour these classics would lose something within their storytelling.
The Bride of Frankenstein was particularly good and the scars may have been considered too real if shown like that in 1935.
People always show Frankenstein's creature as green because that was the colour of the make-up due to the creative lighting they used and how it would look on screen.
In the same way in black and white musicals the man didn't wear a black tuxedo rather a dark blue because it showed up better on the finished film.
Having said all that, as a film collector, if Universal were to colourise these classic films in HD, I would certainly buy.
Anyone new to these films though should watch them as they were intended - black and white.
They wouldn't be better in colour, they would be different but in my view still worth watching.
My favorite was the creature from the black lagoon!
This is superb! the only thing I would change is the colour of Frankenstein's monster. Boris Karloff did use green make up but that was only to show him looking deathly grey in black and white. I think his appearance in colour should be more of a sickly grey.
Dracula’s eyes glowing orange was pretty creepy. I’d they released a set in color I’d buy it.

I love the old b/w Universal monsters films and look forward to watching them on Svengoolie more than the color Hammer Films versions, but I would kill to own these in color.

As much as I love watching The Three Stooges in b/w on Me-TV every weekend before Svengoolie, the colorized DVDs look amazing and make you notice things you never would in b/w.
The Invisible Man is one of my all time favorites. Seeing it in color was definitely a treat!
