  • In this video, I go over my growing collection of vintage brushed Kyosho motors from back in the day. Motors that spend many years in the 80s and 90s pushing some of the all-time great RC buggies and cars around the race track to victory. Come with me as I go back in time and cover some of the iconic Kyosho motors.

Had a Tamiya Grasshopper as my first ever car and immediately upgraded it to a 360 ST. It was real common at our local track to use in "production" class on dirt off road. The RC10 dominated stock class ran mostly Reddy or Yokohoma stock motors with the timing advanced. Didn't know anything about motors at age 12 back then. The number on the box was all I knew. I assumed 360 was better than 240. :-)

Great Video. I have been watching your videos since I pulled out my vintage Boomerang and Thunder Dragon for restoration. My Thunder Dragon has a Kyosho motor in it which I pulled the decal off when I was a kid ( only knew it was Kyosho from the bell end). Been trying to identify it. From this video it seems to be a Lemans 240ST.

Strange how they can be attractive to look at and collect isn’t it. I remember (as a kid) getting a motor from a big RC show in the mid/late 80’s and I chose it based on the look of the can art lol. Just wish I could recall what it actually was. May have been a Kyosho but don’t recognise it there but sure it had ‘stock’ on there in some context. Came in a motor tub too.

The older 1980's vintage 480 series motors had that really cool looking anodised front plate.
It seems the newer models just have a regular one-piece steel can without the alloy front plate. Another unusual feature of the 480's is that they have a skewed (or slightly twisted) armature stack. This made them smoother and faster. than contemporary motors with a straight stack. I think many people wouldn't be aware of this feature unless they have opened up and disassembled their motor for some reason.
Trivia note: The numbering of the motors (240/480 etc) represented the expected run time in minutes when using a 1200maH 7.2v NiCad pack

Very nice collection , did njoy this video clip . Still have two of these nice Kyosho motors among my RC car spares . Did use my 480 Gold in my good ol´ Scorpio I bought back in the 80´s , my Scorpio is running on Ezrun brushless and ESC combo now . Then I have the 550 style monster truck motor 360 Gold I still use in my Marui Big Bear I bought back then .
Do drive my modern RC cars most of the time , but it´s still fun to take my two oldtimers out fer a spin in between . . Be Well & Stay Safe . . . :O) .

Another motor collectible motor was the motor in the original RC10 buggy. The motor was actually made by Yokomo but was very competitive right out of the box. You can find several versions, but the most valuable are the ones that came in the very first RC10.

For me the only Kyosho motor that tops the 360 gold for looks is the Spa240 WS. They are beautiful looking motors. Shame I have hidden mind in a optima mid where I cannot be seen.
Not sure if you know or not but the Le Mans 240ST and the Mega motor outlaw stock 22x1 are the same motor. Kyosho just swapped the label around 89/90 to fit their new branding.

Hi I am from America. I have been thinking about getting back into RC racing. I have an old Tamyia Grasshopper that was modified back in the late 80's. I was wondering what motor I had ran last in it. It is a Kyosho Le Mans 600e. I have the original box, plastic holder and instruction sheet for that motor. I paid something like $28 dollars for the motor back in 1987. I usually won most races with it after some time to get all of the bugs out of the car. That was with the Nicad battery and the mechanical speed controller. I have another carpet racing car that was Frankensteined together and it has the Kyosho Purple Mega Outlaw motor in it. The Mega motor came with the carpet racing car. Until now I didn't know anything about it. I had to turn the speed controller down to run that car on the local carpet track, with the Mega motor. The 600e with the timing turned up would eat the battery up in the Grasshopper in about 3 minutes. LOL

I still remember that I bought the 18x2 2wd Offroad in the mid 90's for a Tamiya Lunch Box that later I started to use it in a Team Associated RC-10. Not sure if I still have it i know kept a few motors on an toolbox that is at a barn on my dads house. Not sure if I gave it away when I moved to the states 15 years ago. I didn't know that at this age others are still buying this pieces of rc history. To me that motor performed well but i always liked speed and it was not that fast. However I would say it was about 35% faster than a stock motor that came with the rc kits.
