In my opinion, the entire Hogs offensive line as a whole should be in the Hall of Fame. Joe Jacoby, Interstate 66 should have been enshrined already. He deserves it. The Hogs set standards for NFL offensive lines for years after they were created.

They beat the Falcons 24-7 in the Divisional round of the playoffs. This was by far the greatest Redskins team ever. They started the season with an 11-0 record. They had 3 shutout games in the first 5 weeks of the season. They had a playoff spot sealed up before they lost their game. They lost 2 games all year by a combined score of 5 points. That's unheard of. As far as the post season goes for, they never trailed for 1 second in the entire playoffs. Not even the '85 Bears can say that. This team deserves a lot more recognition than it gets. Joe Gibbs led this squad from September to the Super Bowl and never once strayed off course. Hail to the Redskins!

Yes, it is tragic. Those of us who remember well, the glory years of the true (dignified) Washington Redskins will have nothing to do with that nauseating charade called the Washington safe spaces (“commanders”). And yes, the 1991 Redskins are the greatest team of all time. People who never saw them will deny this, but they were an awesome force, the perfect admixture of veterans and young talent, orchestrated by the greatest coach of all time, Joe Gibbs. People will deny that Joe Gibbs is the greatest coach of all time but none of them are stupid enough to contend that any coach will ever win three Super Bowls with three different starting quarterbacks, four if you include Jay Schroeder.

#2 on defense and it has to be remembered that a lot of the yardage they gave up was after the game was decided and they called off the dogs and started playing prevent defense. Coach Gibbs wasn't one to purely embarrass a team after the game was out of reach thus the defensive stats are not quite what the reality on the field was. True dominance.

I was at the Broncos games when Art Monk broke the NFL receiving record. And it was already out of hand by that point when the record was made. Joe Gibbs sent Rypien and his offense onto the field to just get Art into the record books. As it was a home game at rocking old RFK on MNF if I remember. He was like 4 plays from tying and breaking the record. The catch that Monk made to break the record, the 'skins were like on the 10 yard line and just marching down the field. That catch literally happened right in front of me. I was so honored to get to see history that night. I have an old Love them Hogs yellow plastic card that I got Art Monk to autograph in my collection of Redskins memorabilia. But Gibbs stopped the offense and told Rypien to take a knee to end the game, instead of scoring another touchdown. I respect Joe Gibbs because he was not a coach to run up scores on teams.

  • @experimentaldream4101
    @experimentaldream4101 Před rokem +3

The Eagles loss was a throwaway game after they locked up home field advantage, so Gibbs rested the starters. The Cowboys loss they were very flat that week and should have won that game if they were just slightly more focused - the Cowboys were not impressive in that win. The Oilers were the one team that nearly outplayed them all year - that was a close and hard hitting game that went to OT because Houston missed the game winner with no time left.
They had the hardest schedule based on win percentage of any SB champion.
Their first three home games were shutouts. The fourth was all special teams scores, so the defense didn't allow a TD at home until the fifth home game.
Mark Rypien was only sacked SEVEN times all season. In week 16, the sub (Humphries) was sacked twice behind a second string o-line against the Eagles.
Think about this: they had the defending SB champions (Giants) in the division AND the extremely GREAT Eagles #1 defense to contend with twice each and still took care of business.
Their kicker led the league in scoring.
I think this was the greatest and most balanced team ever. If they had any flaws, they hid them really well.

Somewhere I have a Redskins football helmet that has the arrowheads on the sides, dating back to when Vince Lombardi coached them. Had season tickets that season, and had super bowl tickets that season too. Our first year to get the season tickets too. My mom and brother got to go to the Super Bowl that season. They kicked ass all that season. I got to go to the NFC Championship against the Lions too. My parents were at what became known as the Seat Cushion game, when fans tossed thousands of yellow seat cushions onto the field near the end of the Falcons playoff game. I will always remember the Great Redskins teams of the 80s and 90s. Joe Gibs was a great head coach, and a great man too. Hopefully the new owner will treat them better than Dan Snyder ever did. And I do think that the '91 Redskins and the '82 Redskins were two of the best teams in NFL History too. My first NFL game I got to attend was the '82 playoff game against the Vikings when the chant "We Want Dallas" was created, and John Riggins bowed to the fans. I remember moving to Virginia and living in Herndon short term before living in Clifton as a child, but really as a 7 year old, the first NFL game was the week one game against the Lions at RFK. I knew very little football and I watched the Redskins destroy the Lions (without Barry Sanders) 45-0. Then after the comeback against Dallas on MNF, the Redskins again shutout another opponent in the Cardinal. I saw heir run where they destroyed teams and beat playoff teams like the Lions, Falcons, Bears, Oilers, Cowboys. They really put it all together and almost wore out that Redskins review VCR tape when I got it. The Redskins played in a tough division in the NFC East and from 1990 to 1995, the NFC East won 4 out of the 5 Super Bowls in the Giants, Redskins, and Cowboys 3 times. The Redskins were just talented up and down in 1991.

Truly the best Skins and top 3 all time team hands down.
Something that really stands out they might be forgotten is how healthy the stayed. I think they may have had one significant injury whereas other years they had enough to hold them back in the playoffs. This was the year they were finally able to stay healthy.
Most will forget how balanced and dominant they were on all 3 phases: offense defense AND Special Teams. Watching them play was the anti Snyder skins lol.
The Cowboys loss was a classic throw records out of the window rivalry game. Oof.
The eagle's game if I remember correctly we are up at the half and someone got injured or got up slow and Gibbs saw or had enough and just pulled his players at the half. He knew he had the Lombardi at hand and didnt want to risk losing it to the bounty hunter bunch.
    Otherwise they were perfection.
Shame how few Redskins there are in the HOF from this era. Everyone on that O line should be in at the very least.

I'd say the '85 Chicago Bears were probably the greatest team ever, BUT indeed that Redskins team in 1991 just flat out outclassed their opposition. And the fact their only two losses were still close games shows just how good they were( they lost Week 17 only b/c they were resting most of their starters, they'd already locked up the #1 seed in the NFC & even THEN they had a lead in THAT game at Philadelphia & the Eagles need to rally late in that game to win but it still had little or no effect on the Redskins regardless ). But yeah, the '91 Redskins were definitely one of the best teams ever. I guess the only thing going against is....their '91 season was practically sandwiched in between the Niners winning back-to-back Super Bowls only a couple years prior AND then the Cowboys immediately after running off their own set of back-to-back Super Bowl wins. So, I guess, because the Cowboys had a sustained run of success soon after the Redskins' '91 season, is the reason the '91 Redskins, despite how great they were that season, kind of have gotten 'lost in the shuffle', they had such a dominant season that year....but as dominant as they were that season, the Redskins fell off dramatically just as quickly only a couple seasons later. They went from 14-2 in 1991 all the way down to a 4-12 collapse of a season just two years later. They kinda fell from grace very rapidly following their '91 campaign. And they've never returned back to prominence ever since. Combine that with all the turmoil that's followed this franchise ever since their decade of glory( 1982-1992, winning 3 Super Bowls in 4 tries ), that '91 Redskins team really does get overlooked nowadays even though that team does deserve some accolades.

They had 1 seed locked up. Played mainly 2nd string most of the game, and should have even won if Wilburn (I think) had picked up late fumble deep in Eagles territory and walked into end zone, instead of knocking it out of bounds. That team dominated the league from start to finish.

But, being a Redskins fan, I don't beleive they are the greatest team ever. I beleive the 83 Redskins were better. Yes, they lost to the Raiders in Super Bowl 18, but unlike the 91 Redskins, the 83 Redskins were cocky and thought the Lombardi was their's if they just showed up to the game. If the 83 Redskins had taken the Super Bowl seriously and won (which they should've), they would be considered the greatest team ever, with the 91 Redskins being a very close #2.

Not only the 91 Redskins disrespected, but the Joe Gibbs era Redskins, period. I can’t tell you how many times I have heard Al Michaels, Dan Dierdorf and others, including John Madden talked about the power teams of the 80s and the list usually goes like this, those power teams of the 80s like the 49ers, The Giants and the Bears.
I’m sorry, the fucking Bears!? WTF? They won a single super bowl in 85 and you’d think they won ten the way they’re bragged up. Sure, they won the Central many times, but come on, the Central, which had The Lions, The Vikings and the Packers (who were all terrible at that time). Any 500 team could win that division every season.
The 49ers, yes, they were the most dominant team of the 80s, but they were also in a terrible division. Washington was in the division with the Giants, Philly and Dallas, who were all great teams. The Giants won two Super Bowls in the same period the Redskins went to four Super Bowls, winning three of them.
Even though Philly didn’t make many appearances they were still good enough then to win any of the other divisions in the NFC, they were just in the toughest division.
The Redskins won more Super Bowls during the Gibbs era than any team, other than the 49ers, so how do they get left off of the list and Da Bears get a spot? In fact, Washington, as a wild card, knocked the number 2 seed Bears out of the playoffs twice, and both times in Chicago! That just proved that the Bears didn’t belong in the hunt and only hosted the games because they were in a pansy division compared to Washington, who was in probably the hardest division in history.
Proof is that the East division from the 70s, 80s and 90s made the most super bowl appearances and certainly held the most Vince Lombardi trophies by a mile. Between Dallas, Washington, Philly and New York, they hold 13 trophies! That’s still more than any division have ever held. How can anyone argue it wasn’t the toughest division in history?
Any team that could advance from that division was going to most likely win it all. Just appearances in Super Bowls, Dallas has 8, Washington has 4, The Giants 4 and Philly has 3, that makes 19 super bowl appearances for one division. They are the toughest in history.
