In my generation people usually started out listening to Dre, then progress to Pete Rock and Premier, finally ending up will Dilla. Dilla was for the true hiphop heads
Alexander R. I was thinking the same too. I was always into Kanye (old Kanye) then Dre, but these days it's more Preemo, Q Tip and Dilla. Maybe it's because I appreciate Jazz more these days
Alexander R. Bro, same here
J dilla Dope music awesome Cool black music and rap good please music radio j dilla music
Back n the day my cuz was like what is that sound that you listen too...dilla
Was and still is for the hip hop heads, that's why music's so special it never loses its shine with time
I remember there was a sound that always took me to a place, and years later, I found out they were all from J Dilla
I know exactly what you mean brother. He definitely made music you could feel and made you reminisce certain moments in life.
I think a gang of us were fans of Dilla (back when he was still Jay Dee) before we knew that we were fans of his. Too many heads who are Dilla fans (including me) have those stories of loving his beats before we even knew who he was. Then, when we learned about him, it was "Yooooo! I didn't know he did that beat! I used to rock that joint all the time!"
@@apexone5502 j Dilla was Jay Dee with Slum Village wow!!!
@@tchakeemn yeah, bro. He went from Jay Dee to J Dilla (once he was becoming more well known) in order to avoid being confused with Jermaine Dupree (who was going by J.D.). Look up his "Welcome 2 Detroit" album and you will see both names.
So, now you know that Dilla was the one who produced songs like "Running" for The Pharcyde (amongst other songs he's done for them) and a bevy of songs for other artists back then.
@@apexone5502 fam, check this track out right here. I liked the whole album, but when you first said that, this song came to mind. I actually thought he was rapping, but listening to it just now, it was just Common calling him out

Don’t cry? That beat is magical
I gree
I gree
Gree
gree I

You can't confine this man to 10. Pure genius
His music came from the space, he was an alien. Nobody else had that magic on beats, if you analyze his music you realize how fucking genious he was, from the punching detroit kicks to the tight nasty and face slapping snares, the crazy patterns, the groove, the way he chopped and played with the samples, his beats have soul man, not even Premier or Dre have that magic sumtin, even being Goats too...What a huge loss hiphop took when he passed away, I still remember how sad my father was that day, thats how deep Dilla music impacted on people. RIP J Dee, your legacy is 4 ever
Madlib is greater
Couldn't have said it better bro
He was an absolute pioneer. Doing shit that nobody had ever even THOUGHT to do. The way he would "offset" (not sure of the technical term for it) snares and kicks just a tiny bit, made them slap that much harder
@@jovantrendmaker4722 U are dead wrong u freak
@@Jsmitt716 Damn crazy for real
No such thing as 'top 10 dilla beats'
Son Anthony 💯💯
Was going to type, "no such thing" but then saw your comment lol... but they had a few that belonged there... like stakes is high and the Janet Jackson remix... but no 'Players' in there??
Exactly what i said
Would have to make 10 top tens lol. Just put up top 1,000 and we can be close
That’s right brother!!!
I'll be 100 years old still jammin to Jay Dee's tracks (cane or no cane)
My favourite J Dilla beat is "It's Your World" from Common's album. The emotions he poured into that beat reverberate across the universe and it'll forever last ❤
That beat is incredible. One of my favorites.
Awesome beat
The its your world beat takes me to a place that's amazing musically a deeply . The man jdilla is a genius
I like Funky For You

Stakes is High was definitely my number one by him!
Runnin..thank God for my generation🔥 best era
The best era!!!
Bro, you are right, nothing like that generation favour by God.
Ranking them is hard but here are some other of my favorites:
Didn't Cha Know (Badu)
Won't do (The Shining)
Dooinit (Common)
Starz (Jaylib)
What is it all about (Slum Village)
Fireworks (Donut)
The look of love (Slum village)
His whole discography is fire
The official is Madlib beat.
@@solgryn4591 Very true, I'll take it off. Still a dope beat tho
Yeah should of had Starz in there
always loved "come and get it" with Elzhi from his solo album. could have its place in this list as well
J dilla underground beat tapes for those in the know
Damn no "Didn't cha know" "So far to go" "Love is..."
All three of them are classics. Didn't Cha Know by Badu is just a whole vibe.
And no Ghostface beats!!!!!
love is was my shit
Stakes is high will forever be his best.. i get lost in that instrumental
“Running” has to be higher. It just has to be, bruh. Probably #1. Good looking out on “Find a way”, underrated beat and track.
Nah. Number 1 has to be don’t cry. That was complex af
1nce Again was the reason I bought Beats Rhymes and Life, the same day I bought labcabincalifornia. Ever since that day in 1996 my whole catalog was 6 degrees of ATCQ and Dilla
Still shining in busta rhymes album is underrated
man I love this shit it reminds me of Nujabes who was another great producer in Japan, unfortunately passed as well may they both rest in beats.
They both share the same birthday in the same year too, that shits crazy
@@2woey3 that's pretty crazy indeed..
This man was a genius
The beat for "Love is" by Common makes me emotional.
The Pharcyde’s music was pure hip hop art in its purest form. I didn’t know he also produced for all these others like Tribe! Awesome list!!
Runnin one of the best SONGS of all time
J Dilla originated that lofi sound in hip hop that we all love. RIP to a GOAT.
Madlib did
Isn't lofi, it's hip hop jazz
I dont even need words, to feel it
"RUNNIN" IS NUMBER 1 !!!!!
The Light!
Rip Dilla , favorite producer since I was a kid
Brandon Brooks the GOAT 🐐
RIP Dilla. Always came with the heat
The choices Dilla made when it comes to snares B is untouchable ❤
I never knew he made 1nce Again for Tribe and I just for that song yesterday. And I found out that he made stakes is high today too
Joshua Lewis 1nce again is from the ummah group contains Dilla & Q Tip & Ali
Joshua Lewis I’m glad I wasn’t the only one, and I been Djaying since 1996
For Real? ‘Stakes is High’ is Quintessential Dilla, & prob in my Top ten from Any producer 🙌🏼
#RestInBeats
The Ummah, people be sleeping on Q-tip on the beats
We will forever miss you, Dilla.. You will live on in your music ...RIP
Dilla’s a producers producer..
Did not know stakes is high was Dilla! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Rest In Peace to this Midwest masterwork producer. He's number 5 on my top 10 Honorable Mentions list right now.
R.I.P🙏
The way you blended these tracks together was seamless. Great job
Dilla was truly the “One Above All” in the beats universe. It literally hurts not to nod your head to these beats...
I remember the first time I heard “Emcee Squared”. Like bro, how did he do that?
Idk if these were his top ten beats, but they were the hits.
these top 10 beats tend to be the top 10 most successful beats
This has to be hits because it doesn’t even have any MF DOOM
@@dblive2899 Dilla only produced for a few MF Doom songs I think
@@coffdrop77 i wish he produced more for doom
This is the epitome of hip hop. To say he is a lost to hip hop isn't big enough, the man's passing was a lost to the culture as a whole. Imagine what he took with him! God bless the King!!!! Making beats in his hospital bed? Miss this man's vision and Artistic abilities. Stakes is High is the greatest track ever!!!!
Detroit, Michigan revolutionized American music time and time again. From Motown to Death, Stevie and beyond, there ain't no now without Detroit. There definitely ain't no now without Dilla. This dude embodied and synthesized everything that black music and Detroit was. Dude had an ear for music (and the means to recreate) the likes of which God envied.
So Thankful I saw J Dilla and Slum Village! Chicago got much Love!
So Far to Go will always be my favorite J Dilla beat/ song. I was hoping it'd be on this list but he has so many great tracks, I'm not even mad.
I found out I was in love with this one girl once I listened to Slum Village’s Fall in Love. The first beat.
That’s by Slum but o.k.
ChrisDoinWork
Whoa, thank you!!!!
Best quality hip-hop for sure
Producers like this are so hard to come by now and days
*nonexistant
Dilla u have been a big part of my life without knowing it was u all along. Thank u for wat u brought to my life. I am forever grateful💛💯🙏
Although it is almost impossible to make a top ten list of beats for J Dilla, this list right here is magnificent!! Excellent mix!!
You and ur smile - still my ringtone to this day.
I wish Drop (pharcyde) was on this list. Such an underrated song and instrumental
Players and Heroin Joint could easily be on this list 💯
The drums in his Climax song has the same rhythm as Incarcerated Scarface's on OBFCL
The drums are sampled, Dilla used the same sample for "The Light" by Common
Honorable mention: E=MC2 and Didn't ya Know.
You didn't even let climax hit the climax
All sick beats. The stakes is high...lawd above 👌🏿
dilla collaborating with common was the perfect match for sure
climax got me through my first yr in the navy back in 2000. favorite beat from dilla.
Ohhhh oh oh….the Al B Sure sample at the end…chills
I can listen to all his joints all day!!!! He was that 🔥🔥🔥🔥
If you ever were a night owl watching Adult Swim, Mash is high on your list of Dilla favorites. Probably the most nostalgia inducing pieces of music I’ve ever heard.
This dude.....
There will NEVER be another like him!
E=Mc2 should be on this list .. just an incredible production
If you’ve ever heard “Woohah, Got You All In Check”, the single, had the Jay Dee Say Bounce remix, after hearing that, that was it, instant fan...
The perfect list
Never knew ONCE AGAIN was a dilla beat, thought it the abstract's beat.🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I love common’s Questions and the Roots’ Dynamite!
this is dope
Climax & Won’t Do will always be my favorite beat by J Dilla 💯
Dilla really was a rarity of talent and soul. RIP
These beats are so good it had me freestyling lol.
Same, it just flows all together
So relieved when I heard “Stakes is High”....and number 1 at that. No arguments here on this list but a top 10 for Dilla is impossible
I can listen to Donuts straight through at any time... so amazing...
💪🏾💯🙏🏽 R.I.P. almost 15 years. Time flies man.
Let's us sit back with a coffee ☕ n remember J Dilla on this snowy afternoon in DC... Bringing me back right now ..
RiP J DillA !! ✊ .. The Stakes are always High..
Dope Dilla face sticker on my back windshield rollin' around Detroit showing respect like I'm spose to. Dilla will always be Motown's finest! Rest In Beats

Dilla dawg r.i.p. your sound lives forever!!!!!
Nobody else does it like dilla did! The GOAT
Dope luv from brooknam
Theres so many he didnt play! BUT honestly i like this Top 10. It gets to the heart and choice sound of the legend
"top 10 beats", based on? units sold, commercial success & popularity? artist versatility? what's the criteria? altho these are solid selections, i'm DEFINITELY 😧🤔😒 on selections 9, 6 and 2 (yes, even 2)...even if you had 10 "top" selections, that's it? case closed and there's nothing else to consider? this man's catalog and creativity has such depth, range, substance & impact (as I'm sure you know), it's truly immeasurable...
so, appropos, the title of this video should be "Dilla's top 10 beats, PART ONE (of ten)"
This makes me smile …..
I grew up in a culture that demonized hip hop, for whichever reason. I was introduced to Jdilla via nujabes via samurai Champloo. Then came a journey diving into his work from purely a musician’s point and the respect and intrigue and impact of that continuous discovery led me to Asheville, NC to the Moog museum. Amazing
This is a vibe
You are truly missed bruh🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🥲🥲🥲
Once you here that "yeah yall"...
j dilla lives through his music fr RIP man
