    This is also the episode that has a couple of lines that hint that, not only are Niles and CC now a couple, but that their relationship is very...passionate, and maybe a bit kinky. ("Kitchen? Closet? Stairway? Limo? Walmart?" and then maybe later, Home Depot.) A lot of fanfics have been written based on those one or two lines.

    I believe deep down the real reason Maxwell was against the wedding yes he made a good point of Maggie dating Michael not for long I think the real reason he was upset that Sara was not there to see Maggie getting Married he did not say it I believe that was the real reason he was upset still this is a good series I wish we could had seen more of Sara and mention Sara more and how she died She would had talk sense in to Maxwell if she was alive I also believe Sara and Fran would had been great friends Sara calming down Maxwell when he needed it .

      They sort of forgot by this point there had been a first wife. Early in season 6, they do make references to her, but it's in the form of Fran trying to be like her by...hanging out at the country club. Which makes it sound like she might have been a stereotypical aloof rich parent too, whereas before it sounded like she had been a warm person, and the house lost its warmth when it lost her. But I don't think Max thinking Maggie was too young to get married was unreasonable. (In fact, all of his concerns that she was too into boys/guys were pretty understandable, and although Fran helped her be less shy, Fran also encouraged her boy-craziness.) And then was shocked she was having a...physical relationship (with this guy, the groom here) when she (Maggie) was about 20.

    • @jessicalillianweinberg4401
      @jessicalillianweinberg4401 Před 3 lety +9

      This was also the only episode where Niles doesn't appear (although CC talks about him, and to him on the phone, making some hilariously suggestive references to the relationship they're having.) I believe Daniel Davis had a death in the family and was unavailable for filming, so they had Niles go to a reunion of his (biological) family (in London.) And he's left by the time Michael proposes. But I still find it hard to believe Niles wouldn't come back for the wedding of one of the children that were practically his! (They didn't turn his leaving into a real storyline, for example, by having CC worry that he was going to London to get away from her.) And, in the last three episodes, where Niles and CC, because they have each other, are much happier - everything feels happier and lighter, but you also miss the snarky witticisms. The show has a very different "feel."

    • @jessicalillianweinberg4401
      @jessicalillianweinberg4401 Před 3 lety +3

      The reason Michael gives for rushing into marriage is that he's going to Japan to model for a year, and doesn't want them to be apart. (Not a great reason.) But what we hear in the finale about where Maggie is going isn't consistent with this episode.

    • @jessicalillianweinberg4401
      @jessicalillianweinberg4401 Před 3 lety

      @@BeeKee404 I agree that waiting a long time to get married isn't all bad, nor is being...over 29 (or 39), as I said above. In fact, I feel like the relationship Niles and CC are having by this point kind of shows that. And I don't think the fact that two people aren't married after several years necessarily means anything is wrong. I don't actually dislike Max for wanting to take the relationship slowly or waiting a long time to marry her, but he sent mixed signals about whether it WAS a relationship at all, and sometimes acted very...cold to Fran. He couldn't say the "l" word and it was supposed to be either a British reserve thing or about loyalty to his first wife. But he wasn't too unemotional to yell at Fran. (They actually seem not to like each other very much, at times.)
      But, I think some of the reasons Max gave for being hesitant, which we were supposed to write off as rationalizations for his obscure fears, were real issues (thinking about how it would affect the kids, and how different he and Fran were - I'm not sure they belong together). She did a lot of things that caused real problems for him. The fact that he's her employer doesn't seem to be the big reason for him, but if they had written him concerned about taking advantage of her in the situation, that would be a sympathetic reason for holding back. I kind of think their cat-and-mouse game kind of suited them better than a real relationship.

    • @jessicalillianweinberg4401
      @jessicalillianweinberg4401 Před 3 lety +1

      @@BeeKee404 I do hate when a character is told by their friends that they have a serious hang-up or fear-of-intimacy issue because they're not ready to get married or move in after a few months of dating. I'm thinking of books now, often the mystery genre. I can even understand why people who have been having a relationship for a long time enjoy their status quo and may not be in a hurry to share a household / get married (or feel ambivalent, just about the change.)
      I don't think it necessarily should mean they don't love the person. (In the episode after this one, CC gushes to Fran about how great her relationship with Niles is, and even says "I found my man." And then in the next episode after that, the finale, Niles proposes, and CC is...a little freaked out. She says something like, "Our relationship is great the way it is - why does he have to bring up marriage.")
      But in Max and Fran's case, he acted ambivalent and sent mixed signals about whether he loved her, whether they were "a thing" at all. (But he would go crazy the minute someone else pursued her - and she considered running away with his brother during that time, and he only found out later, but was furious.)

      Interestingly, Fran spends much of the series bemoaning that she's not married yet, but during late season 5, when she and Max are engaged, she goes to a reunion (not sure if it's college or high school, but I'm not sure Fran even went to college) - and finds out that everyone who did get married young is divorced, or about to be so! I think this show actually suggests that taking relationships slowly and waiting to get married until you're...past 29...aren't bad things. This is actually an episode where Niles and CC are "officially" in a relationship, and because they're so happy, I sometimes want to say it's sad that they lost all those years, but I sort of feel like their relationship (at least, the physical side) is as good as it is precisely because they waited so long. It seems like they know each other really well and have a lot of...feelings stored up.

      Jessica Lillian Weinberg I totally agree that a big subliminal theme in the series is that life doesn’t happen in the way you expect. And unconventional pathways can definitely be more successful than those laid out before you. I’m just whining about a bunch of stuff that I know is only temporary and I’ll move on from in time 😊

      @@Nameless_mixes Not long ago, the Wall Street Journal came out with an article about how "late bloomers" (in the career sense) are really normal. Not sure I could post a link here.
      And don't forget that most people with families have expenses you don't have...a lot of them are really struggle right now with paying medical bills, and child care (especially if your workplace opens back up before the school does.) I am thankful not to have some of those burdens. And, the nice thing about being single in this kind of economic situation is, if you need to move or something for a new job, no one else has to be involved in the decision. BUT having said that, for those of us who have "things we want to do" in life, whether personal or career...it's definitely harder to start right now, not because of our ages, but because of the state of the world, access to things, people, etc.

      I thought Max often "had a point" especially when it came to Maggie. I'm not sure Fran's influence on her was so positive, actually. And while we were supposed to think Max being "concerned about the children" if he got into a relationship with Fran was just an excuse for his fear of intimacy, I can see why someone would be worried about Fran raising their children.

      @@jessicalillianweinberg4401 I feel the one time Max had a legit case for being overprotective of Maggie was when Maggie, being 17 at the time, dated a 25 year old in “The Cradle Robbers” episode. That guy had no business being interested in a minor still in high school when he was well an adult and done with college. Granted, all worked out because Maggie eventually saw Fran’s point about the age gap being too big for them to be compatible, but that was a very problematic relationship and an illegal one in many places. Max had good reason to be concerned, so I give him that one. That story arc in the episode didn’t age well, although the rest is still pretty funny.

      @@AlbertaRose94 agreed ! Why live together and invest in a guy have kids with them if they didn't commit under the guise they don't have money to get married and they are "saving up money for the wedding "? You don't need to spend alot to have a nice wedding. Just pay the priest and the legal fees and get a cake and have it at the park or the justice of the peace. I didn't love with my husband before getting married and we are 11 years in

      Well, no. He doesn't "have a say in his daughter's future" when said daughter is an adult. Plus, that kind of approach just makes people defiant, so even if he had a point, she would be *less* likely to do what he wanted.
