Barcelona fans should not forget how amazing this guy was for them over the years. Players decline over time, it's natural. Some earlier others, but sooner or later they decline. The worst kind of fans are those with short memory whatever club you're in.

Honestly as a Barca fan, I haven’t been happy with Pique’s performances this season. However I cannot ignore that he’s been playing with injuries/pain for a while now and kept having injections to be able to play (specially last season). His body is not up for it anymore and I’m sure it takes a lot for someone of his stature to recognize and accept that before it’s too late. I haven’t always been happy with his performances through the years, but I’m sure all true Barca fans are grateful for his immense contribution to the club.

I hate that him announcing his retirement makes people focus more on Barca's current state and not his incredible career. One of the best CBs of this generation in my opinion.

A good dancer? My guy, the new sporting law in Spain states that no player can do business with federations or competitions they play in. Piqué took the Spanish super cup to Arabia via Kosmos, his company, doing business with RFEF. He's retiring because the new law forces him to do so before the law is passed, which is expected in the coming weeks.

I would say Piqué's prime was 2008-2012. His level dropped thereafter for whatever reason. There were some brief resurgences in his form in the intervening years -- namely, the 2014/2015 and the 2018/2019 season although it not being as high as it once was but considerably better than what he offered his worst of times.

I've been watching Barcelona since Pep took charge. I agree that Pique has passed his peak years, is massively overpaid, and has too many negative news and rumors as one of the captains. I also feel that Bartomeu is to be blamed for the massive pay bill the team is facing now. But really nobody is gonna point out how the salary cap rule has been ruining La Liga? It's not only Barcelona that is suffering, Valencia also had to sell some of their fan's favorites to follow the stupid rule, and Atletico still struggled with its salary cap now. If you think this only weakens the top teams and give the mid-table teams more opportunities, listen to this, in early Aug this year, 60% of the teams in La Liga could not register their whole squad due to the salary cap. La Liga used to win 6 UCL cups in 10 years, and Sevilla and Atletico used to dominate the UEFA Cup. Look at how they are doing this year? La Liga's salary cap rule in the past few years is full of stupidity, stubbornness, and arrogance. If this does get fixed, La Liga is gonna be overtaken by Serie A and Bundesliga in no time.
I think it's more mismanagement in Barcelona's case than anything... Because how come we never hear Real in this salary cap nonsense and everyone knows Perez and la Liga aren't particularly on good terms ?

A legend to go down in the history of this club, and surely had a great career right from the start, sadly the form declined and it was hard to keep up and push through, especially with all the hate he been getting from a lot of fans, also from a lot of non-fans(haters). I def would love to see the replacement we have up for him, but I would not celebrate the ideology, "he leaves, and I'm happy". Say what you want to say, but for me, he'll always be one of the best defenders in the history.

Honestly not a surprise, probably because the locker room must've changed so much over time as well, given who all he used to play with have left or are almost retiring except a select few. Puyol is gone, Messi isn't around, Xavi is his manager now, Iniesta isn't around, Pedro, Alves, Villa and probably so many more. Roberto came in as a youngster when Pique was a senior player and now Roberto is a senior player in the squad.
Also Xavi and Piqué's relationship deteriorated while Xavi was still playing. I am sure that played a role ever since Xavi became coach

Be real Ale, Pique very well knew that competition was stiff and players ahead of him were better than him, sure you can make a case for Alonso but Pique's performances in the games that he played this season were dreadful. He just was not mentally focused in games either, this was not something that was being discussed now, it has been seasons Pique been very distracted away from the game. He is truly a Spanish, LaLiga and European great, winning on all fronts and FC Barcelona Fans won't forget his contributions, but every player legend status or not must know and understand that when you can no longer contribute to a team's growth or performance to make room for new blood or youth players. That is one of the best contributions you can make when your time is coming to an end, pass on your knowledge, play a lesser role or move. I wish him all the best and thankful for his contributions to the beautiful game.

Pique had sh*t for the past 3-5 seasons, we have suffered embarrassment under his lack of defensive attributes, we have consistently got embarrassed in champions league because of his pace and weaknesses not him alone but him and the other captains, they also need to vacate asap.

I have loved Pique for the incredible service he has provided. At first when hearing of his retirement MID SEASON I thought he was quitting and giving up but I have changed my opinion. I respect that if he feels he cannot continue to perform at the standard he feels belongs at barca then that’s fine and if he feels his form and physicality isn’t what it once was then I understand his decision to retire! He’s also helping the club giving up 30 million. I can see Pique could still have left and played for any other club but he didn’t wanna wear any other jersey. Let him retire in peace

I believe the decision between Pique, Barca and Xavi is mutual.

Sad to see Pique retiring at age 35. Usually center backs have better longevity in the game eg, Maldini, Costacurta, Nesta, John Terry, Thiago Silva, Materazzi, Chiellini all achieving footballing success in their mid 30s instead of retiring.
I believe under better coaching, physios and better club stability would have allowed Pique to further his career. I also do believe some of that blame has to be on his part as he doesn't look like the hardest trainer and the most focused of athletes especially when you have a wife who is in the limelight all the time.

Pique will always be a Barcelona legend. Unfortunately due to the fallout of his relationship with his ex girlfriend and dealing with Spanish media and haters, it made the whole thing worse. I think Pique retiring is the best decision right now. He has already done it all and won a WC.
