Do you have any tips for someone that might be making their first short film?
Hi Ryan, thanks you soo much for very valuable information, much appreciated
Just wondering if you can share a chart or shot list.

"You have to start somewhere..." Thanks !
Thanks for watching!
Perfect timing with this video. I’m still recording for my first short film fest (moment film invitational) so I’m definitely going to consider all of this when I finish up tonight and tomorrow.
Awesome, Eddie! Thanks for watching!
You could cast your 12 year old brother as a grizzled detective if it was a body switch movie
You got me there! But, wouldn't you still need to cast someone appropriate for his original body before the switch takes place?
@@RyanCampFilms I guess if you want to show the grizzled detective yes
I saw that you’re partnering with Moondog Labs this year, that’s awesome!
@@RyanCampFilms yes! Very exciting
What’s a good link for the viewers to find out more about your festival?
Great tips video mate. The main worry for video / film makers seems to be audience reaction. "Will anyone like it?" Sure, that's a concern and should be ironed out at the script phase and feedback, but the point is, if it's your first attempt, state that. People are generally kind and supportive. And if they aren't, don't pay them much mind. If only a few people dig your film, that's a win. Build on what works. Refine and hone your skills. Don't let fear hold you back.
My first ever interview for TV in England was for ITV. And it was Dame Vera Lynn, who was famous for WW2 songs etc. Very much a British icon. But, I hadn't really done my prep. So the interview was stopped halfway by the organiser. I thought I'd lost it. I was removed from the room and given a proper dressing down. But, she was cool, I went back in and she was more than happy to start again once I said it was my first ever TV interview. That evening, at the end of the five o'clock news, my segment was shown. To millions. Don't give up, and keep going.
Re. film making, it's of course very collaborative. Form a good, hard working, non ego centred team. Work together, communicate properly and get it done. And never, ever compare yourself to the greats. Your dead in the water if you do. We can't all be Scorcese, Truffaut, Tarkovsky. Make it your own. Tell your story, have your moment. Anyway, that's my two pennies' worth. Best of luck!
Love your story! Thanks so much for sharing and your input! Wise words!
Excellent and helpful video Ryan. I used to make a lot of (amateur, short) films, but due to a number of circumstances (not going to bore you with what!)I lost my confidence and haven't picked up my cam in over 2 years. But if you're a film making geek, you never really loose that need to create, and having taken early retirement last March, with covid and all this time on my hands, I really want to try and get back into this. I have some ideas and watching this video has really motivated me to get going again. Many thanks!!
Love to hear that!
Thanks so much for the tips along with all of ur helpful videos.
Glad you found something here that's helpful! Thanks for watching!
Thanks Ryan, great video and some of that was timely advice for me!
Glad it came in handy! Thanks for watching!
I had absolutely no 1 to help me make my 1st horror short so i pretty much gave up for a while. Then i was watching a youtube show called SML with my son.. They use plush dolls as actors and have millions of subscribers so i bought a chucky doll off of eBay and grabbed my sons Stewie Griffin doll and used them as my actors. It let me learn how to edit and taught me a lot about lighting and camera angles. Now i feel more comfortable about shooting a real horror film I've been wanting to do. Over the 5 videos i made using dolls and me dressed in Halloween costumes.. im now able to be the camera man, set my own lighting, do my own editing, and make all the music i put in my video's. Now im going to find people on social media who are willing to work with me on making a real horror film thanks to Ryan Camp for giving me that idea. For anyone reading this my point is don't let anything hold you back from doing what you want to do no matter how silly the 1st few ideas may be.. Look at me lol. i used dolls for horror short films. But now i have the knowledge to show the world what i can really do. I hope this comment encourages at least 1 person to start a channel and scare some viewers.
That is awesome! I'd love to see some of your work sometime! Keep creating!
Chucky & Stewie that’s actually amazing. Congrats dude
Thank you. This is one step closer to emotionally being able to do it. By the way, why you don't have a link to your work? I would just LOVE to see how you grew. That kind of thing I feel is the most inspiring. The humanity in the growth process. Kinda really hits home that I can do it too.
Butterfly Stampede click on his channel, it’s right there
@@butterflystampede1945 thanks for the comment.. I encourage everyone to start a CZcams channel. I honestly believe there is room for everyone who is interested in trying.

Thanks for the video. I'm doing a short Batman film. We plan on doing some crazy science fiction, but it seems like Batman is a good start. Established character, grounded in reality, etc
Thanks for watching! Batman is my favorite superhero!
Mine too
thanks!
Thank you for watching!
What if I just wear a white night gown that I threw in the dirt a couple weeks ago and put my hair down
Whatever works! 😊
1. Check Weather, traffic, parking
2. Camera check/Camera test, maybe even with stand ins.
3. Charge your batteries, and more
All sounds simple, but always seem to forget
Great tips!
Thank you. This video was very helpful for my AV class, we took into consideration many of your tips. A good tip is to practice as much as possible.
Comments like this are what keep me going! Thank you! 🙏🏼
Simple story makes editing much easier
Definitely!
Mr Ryan camp? I want your advice. What should i do if my actors drops out a few days before filming my indie film? How to solve this on set problem
That awful, and it happens. You can either postpone and try to find a replacement actor, or rewrite the story to work with what you have on the spot.
This helped.
So glad!
I want to make a movie but i dont have any camera's or lights, i only have my phone. How do i make a movie with my phone?
Just do it! Don't worry about the gear. I have several videos on making films with just your phone.
@@RyanCampFilms Thank you.
Well here we go,I just read your request for tips .I have picked up camcorders like a canon hfg 30 with remote and a quality light or offer up for 300 $ with 16 hrs on the clock,I have gotten 3 such deals ,48 in slider for 40 $ ,these cameras have stabilization ,face tracking ,low light and cinamatic feachers and large censors.their made for video.i believe you should invest a grand before you get serious.
Good stuff!
I think I am ready to make a short film. @Ryan Camp can I make a short film with a 4k action camera?
