- Within this airbrush review, we are taking a look at an inexpensive double action airbrush by Neoeco called the sj83. At $39 usd, this gravity fed airbrush is cheap and has a ton of features for the price. Within this review I'll go over everything I'd want to know about an airbrush before purchasing one including how well it sprays (atomize) paint, the build quality, and whether or not it's worth the price. Thanks for watching!

Very timely review for starters and hobbyist. Thank you so much for putting this out. Really helps in canvassing and decision-making. With your extensive experience and knowledge about the subject. Every info you throw out there is just so reliable. More power. I love your work. Keep it up.
I had my eyes on it for a while. Now I have to hurry before the price rise after your reviev 😆 Excellent job as always Mark!
The most accurate, honest review (this also counts and for your other reviews)!!! I own a bunch of Iwatas but I like to test some cheap ones too. This is the best cheap airbrush you can get!! And it’s the best so far for me. I was pretty impressed!! Sprays really good
Great review Mark! What a fantastic airbrush kit for not a lot of money. Cheers👍✌️
Thanks Mark!!
great , un-biased review as always..thank you for providing quality content ..
I have three of these. After polishing the needle with autosol the performance is fantastic. I love them. Great review, thank you.
I just got my second a month ago. I suppose I should get a third but I need another color.
I have three of them also. I paint fishing lures and I keep one with each of the different needles and nozzles. I agree that keeping the needles polished is an important thing, I found that these needles came in a relatively polished condition. Maybe not perfect but leaps better than most other inexpensive airbrushes.
@@wwiiinplastic4712 They come with the chrome cup now also, at least the last two I got had them. So I have a black one with a chrome cup, a red one with a red cup and a red one with a chrome cup so I can keep track of which is which.
@@SammysBaits I'd love a green one, though.
Wow! That was a really thorough review! I have three of them, I keep one with each nozzle and needle in it. I am not much of an artist, I mainly paint fishing lures but I mostly look to get pretty realistic and that means I need to have control, especially since my canvass might only be one square inch sometimes. I have to say, their customer service is incredible also. They are coming out with a new airbrush and spent a lot of time talking with their customers trying to find out what is important in the new design.
fishing lure painting is awesome! I've never tried it but really loved some of the stuff Ive seen
@@theartworkshop for me being a fisherman it makes it a lot more fun. Problem is my website has made me so busy I don't have much time to fish. Painting the crankbaits relieves stress for me so it is great!
I bought this for the hose and reamer etc... I got the Harder & Steinbeck Ultra Squidmar 2024 for my normal painting etc, but I think I might use the Neo with the biggest nozzle for metallics and PVA etc. H&S said that the Ultra can do those no problem too, but I dunno haha. The one I got ihas a different cup but more or oless seems the same, came with a lot of nozzle/needles.
Another awesome informative video! Do you think the .05 needle would be sufficient to spray say Stynlerez primers? I am wanting a dedicated brush just for priming and clear coating but leaning more towards a .07 needle/nozzle
Thanks so much! I'm not familiar with stynylrez, but a .5 is okay for spraying some thicker mediums like primer. I'd prefer a larger one though for sure. Hope this helps!
When you get a chance, could you do a review on a badger renegade chrome airbrush thank
I'll add it to the list!
Mark, have you tried a Sparmax? I think you will really like them. I bought a Max 3 last week and instantly took a nice place in my arsenal along my Iwatas and Badgers.
No, but I absolutely need to! Thank you for reminding me- a sparmax will be one of my next airbrush purchases for the channel. I've heard so many great things about them but never owned one. Excited to check them out
You did a review of the GAAHLERI 39 Advanced series airbrush; of these 2 airbrushes, which one do you like better?
Any details about your preference is greatly appreciated!
Thank you for your many great videos! I have learned so much!
I found both were pretty solid budget airbrushes. I liked the control of the neoeco more. I found it to be very responsive
Ok, I love the review. I have one of these and am absolutely bowled over by the design and its ability to paint broad or fine. So, why would I want to go out and spend a fortune on a name brand that doesn’t spray any better than the Neoeco? Plus, the nozzle design is a piece of engineering brilliance! I hope Neoeco patented it because I can imagine the big boys crying into their beer for not thinking of it first!
I agree 100%. I paint 30 to 50 hours a week and with that much time I am bound to bend a needle once in a while or even wear out a nozzle. Why would I want to spend $40 for a needle and nozzle when I can get a set from NeoEco for 1/3 the price and it is a set of all there sizes! I put my Eclipse in the back up line and now use all there of my NeoEcos.
You make great videos
Glad you like them- thank you!
@@theartworkshop Your welcome
Great vid. I use an airbrush for model building. I have a budget airbrush like this but don’t know what the knurled assembly directly below the paint container is for. Can you elaborate? It’s the one that’s in front of the quick connect hose assembly. Many thanks.
That controls airflow- it's usually called a MAC valve (micro air control). I explain it in this video at around the 3 minute mark- czcams.com/video/JTN_5p8LCvE/video.html
Thanks for this. If I’m doing a thorough cleaning, does this come apart? Should it come apart?
Very good one but there is one problem. The trigger pin goes through a O ring and if we soak the aibrush in some solution or high temperature, it may swell so the trigger will be stuck and stay down so the air will constenly go through. I had to change it. Good thing that NEOECO provides O rings with the airbrush.
I wonder if that was more of a fluke. I have had one for over a year that I use to spray my clear coat and it gets clean with acetone and I put it in my ultrasonic cleaner once a week and never have had to change that o-ring.
@@SammysBaits good to know. I got to be careful because it’s exactly in the ultrasonic with high temperature that I got my o ring swelled. I have to go easy on the damn temp. Once we turn it on, it doesn’t stop at the set temp. It continu to heat up .
Thanks for the review! Between the Neoeco SJ83 or the Gaahleri GHAD-39 which would you pick between the two?
I like the NEOECO a touch more than the Gaahleri.
Got a Ghad 39 and returned it the same day. It has a lot going for it but the needle felt like 200 grit and the spraying was super inconsistent
I really like this brush and very surprised on the performance. Don’t like the cup but you can purchase a Stainless which I plan on but getting used to the anodized cup! Lol
Heads up, it isn't a stainless, it is chrome. I have several and on two of them the chrome is starting to flake. I like the chrome because my eyes are not so good anymore and it was so hard to see if I had all the paint cleaned out of the black cup. Their customer service is so good that I know if I contacted them they would switch it out but I just us it now that the flaking has stopped. Just wanted to give you a heads up.
Thanks I guess my biggest question would be how much more performance do you get from the higher price of other more expensive brands?
Not that much. So little that I put my Eclipse on the back up line up and now use there NeoEcos. If I bend a needle or screw up a nozzle it is considerably less to buy the parts for the NeoEco and the performance is very close.
Gotta agree the amount of options for airbrushes that spray decently is way higher now than in the past. Some being suprisingly good. Good trigger response = better than h&s in my book already :0
That trigger looks really tall, which for beginners is probably good, myself i'd probably want to see if I could change it out to a shorter one for more speed.
Great work as usual!
Yes, Bill! The number of options is now way better. This brush sort of looks like Iwata/hns/badger/passhe(Talon) all in one😲
I've been bugging H&S on youtube about their trigger response and they said they are working on something that should be out next year that should be good for fine arts...I'm hoping that it's amazing, I love their nozzle design, so so easy to clean. But man I've spidered a lot with it
They kept saying look at this mini painter, he uses our 0.2mm nozzle!.....but it was to base coat and blanket paint. Which is what I use them for now is spraying large areas lol
@@SB_Artsy Its been a known issue since I don't know before I started airbrushing. They are beautiful, and everything is well built overall, but that trigger design leaves no room for variance.
And at the cost of a cr plus not having precise consistency is a big no from me. That is why i have zero h&S brushes here. Some still love them though.
@shad0w4life2 reason I swapped mine for ps771... was never consistent. If Dred Fx would have come out with the hack before i got rid of brush, I probably still have it.
I'm with you there, the trigger is on the tall side. But man they got the responsive down on this one. The trigger also had the flat sides like you mentioned before. i think you were right on how this adds to a more responsive trigger. Thanks Bill!
Remarkable little product, thanks for sharing - it does look like a H&S-alike👍💜😊✌️
Another question mark iwata micron sb it’s like takumi spray patten or is deference
exact same spray pattern & control
Thanks mark God continue blessing you 🙏🏾
And it's damn good lookin too.
too good to be true. So is it really almost as good as the 0.18 iwata/gsi creos?
I didn't say that. If anything it would be closer to a neo for iwata. Regardless it's very solid airbrush in my opinion
hey mark, hows the mac valve on this one compared to badger xtreme?
This one is excellent besides it being crooked on the body! It's a true mac valve and works just like a creos or iwata
@@theartworkshop thats good news .. thank u for replying
Since I got my first one (I own two; black and red) I hardly ever touch my HP-CS except to spray sealers or primers.
Really eh? Isn't the HP-CS supposed to be a much better brush?
@@landwand I found little difference in performance, but the Neoeco is easier to clean and has more adjustments to control air flow. Also a third the price.
I am not an artist, I barely qualify as a hobbyist, I just need an airbrush to do some very broad spray coats of primer, base color and clearcoat. I don't need any fine detail stuff at all. I think I'll get the siphon version of this, thanks
I didn't even know they made a siphon version- I'll need to check that out. Thanks!
This is the second review I've seen and I must have bought a bad one I'm still trying to get it to work properly it spits, broken lines and it only sprays if I turn the psi up to 30-35 which defeats the purpose of a .2 needle/nozzle which I bought it for.
I would reach out to neoeco and see if they can replace it.
Did you ever contact NeoEco? I know their customer service is 100%, I am certain they would replace it for you. I received one with a bad air inlet and they sent a new air inlet but it somehow got lost in the mail so for my time they just sent me a new airbrush. I promise these guys are great!
@@SammysBaits I will do this
👍👍👍👍👍
£83 in the UK now. More expensive than harder and steenbeck!
How can they make any profit? I am an engineer and can't believe how inexpensive this is.
When you get a chance, could you do a review on the Iwata-Medea cordless rechargeable electric eraser? I think you and others would really like it. Thanks
I doubt I'll make a review of an eraser for the channel but I might have to pick one up to check out. If I do I'll def let you know!
@@theartworkshop thanks
@@danmaher7947 Hey Dan i recently got a cordless that is the same as the iwata. It was both cheaper than my derwent and sakura battery operated ones. And more powerful and the charge lasts a good time.
I can only speculate on durability long term. Since ive never burned out an electric eraser i just am hopeful they will last. The battery will probably degrade over some years, but it was cheap enough if I had to buy one a year i wouldnt complain.
