It also has a lot to do with the person who does the interviews.
      The person asking the questions.
If that person is approachable, calm, and genuinely interested in the person they interview, the person picks this up.
Mark Laita is a very special person. He sees people. He's not doing this for a newspaper, he's not employed by anyone. He does this because he's interested for real. And that's really rare.
Of course there's other great journalists and interviewers, people always talk about Oprah Winfrey as one of the best in the business.
I'd much rather see Mark do an in depth interview with Prince Harry and Megan Markle.
Because he has no personal interests. He doesn't stear the interviews in any direction. The best videos I've seen are the ones where he asks no questions at all.
And he doesn't kiss people's behinds. He treats everyone the same. That's unique.

I am impressed that Gilbert was able to speak about his emotions. Society teaches men that they must be strong and not show emotion. That is so wrong. We are all human and we all have emotions. If he is only 2 weeks sober he is going to be feeling overwhelmed with emotion. (Everything that one holds in comes out at once when you get sober). He showed some really great emotional insight on his behaviors, anywhere from his parents not giving him emotional support that led to gang life to drug use. Gilbert needs more family support. If his family is not being supportive of him and if angry at him, ignoring his children he will have a difficult time with getting clean and sober. A program would be very beneficial for Gilbert. A program would teach him to deal with a family that is not doing the right things and he would gain support from the program. I hope that Gilbert can get out of his current life and see his family, there is a much better life out there.

And that he is worth being loved unconditionally. Being loved less than your siblings or half siblings is confusing and you never heal from that pain. It’s a betrayal of the heart from the only people in the whole world that are supposed to love you and have your back no matter what. The heart doesn’t run out of love...there is more than enough love for all the children and more, not just one or two wanted children. The kid in us still wants our parents approval no matter how hard we try to deny, harden, numb, harm or punish ourselves. That pain is always there growing and often affects our decisions on a subconscious level. It will definitely affect all your relationships later in life. Gilbert needs to know he is worth being loved and valued. Why just survive when you can teach your own kids how to thrive.

Favoritism in Mexican families is very real for me, that resignated with me. We will never know why are parents do the things they did or who of the siblings they had to protect more. I just tell myself, they did what they could, they did the best they could. I’ll be praying for you Gilbert and your children. I can definitely understand how the self-esteem goes first and new anxieties and fears enter into our lives because of other people, but you’re right we have to also be accountable for our own contributions to that. God bless!

Evil Side life is hard, and feeling alone in the world can make it even harder. It’s sad our supporters seem to show up after it’s too late and we are 6 feet under. I only understand because I’ve been there. We’ve got to help each other out. I’ve been through a lot but I wouldn’t take those hard times back. They have made me stronger and I have so much more knowledge and understanding for others. I just want whomever to know, there are so many people rooting for you, more than maybe you know. It’s hard to feel alone, or worse, feeling alone when there are people around you. Feeling like the world is against you. Taking the steps towards change is hard, SO hard. But once you do, you realize you can make life your bitch. You get a sense of feeling proud and that your future isn’t already written for. When the time comes, those who really need change will go for it, but sometimes, we are just too afraid. Afraid of the unknown. If I could hold everyone’s hand and guide them there, I would. I want to help change our broken people, us, me. Lead us all to better things. Show those people who told us we couldn’t, can’t, and won’t, that we will, and that we are. I’m here. Right here. Standing with many others, rooting for all and any people to the life that they DESERVE. That YOU deserve. ♥️ drugs are evil backstabbing friends. They show you a good time, lead you to bliss. And then one day you wake up and realized you’ve been lead astray and the way back home is a treacherous path. It’s scary and dark. It’s easier to stay where you are and work hard each and every day to stay well and safe than try and make that journey back to your old life. Unaware if the friends and family you left behind will still be there. They are. And so many others. Support and friends and online community groups, anything or anyone who can be there for you, they’re doing it because they care, trust that. Not drugs. Fuck them. They’ll try and lead you back, it’s a hard fight, but you’re so much tougher, we all are. We’ve just got to be here to support one another in such hard times before we are lost and gone for good. Wether physically or mentally. May love and support guide you and all through all walks of life ♥️

If a person struggles to regulate themselves they just get sucked into a vicious cycle and their choices are stuck on repeat. It's starts with breaking the cycle - sometimes it takes a fresh pair of eyes to show a different perspective. Also self awareness and a full acceptance of mistakes that were in their realm of control. The person needs to want to change and admit their problems are bigger then they themselves can deal with alone - it doesn't make you weak to ask for support or accept help. All kinds of emotions get in the way - the biggest is shame!

@Atmos One Hi Josh, I had both my parents growing up but that said it was very dysfunctional - my father was self employed (carpet fitter) and my mother worked a couple of minimum wage jobs. We never had much money due to my mother's gambling addiction. She remortgage our home by forging his signature which almost broke him. I was the middle daughter of three. My mother made it clear by both her words and actions that she never wanted me. I was singled out and treated very differently to my siblings. At 17 I went on holiday with my sister who was 21. I was brutally raped - after telling my sister she told me not to tell anyone as it would ruin her holiday and she would be blamed for leaving me. I confided in my boyfriend's mother and she informed my parents. My mother's reaction was to make me replace the clothing that belonged to my younger sister (clothes I'd been raped wearing). Clothing was worth more than me as a person. I could tell many more stories but I think you get the overall gist. Honestly, some people shouldn't be parents. A child needs to feel love and emotional warmth. Those are supposed to be your foundations in life that you build upon. I learnt to be nothing like my mother or siblings. I am not interested in creating a fake facade for the outside world.
I went off the rails in my teen years after the aforementioned rape. I turned to alcohol and smoked a lot of weed, took ecstasy too but had such a freaky trip that luckily put me off. What turned my world around was having my first child at 20. That's when I came to a crossroads in my life - one of many! But, if you carry the past around it's going to repeatedly influence decisions/choices. After my father died (I was 26 and pregnant with my 2nd son) I made a conscious decision to distance myself from the toxicity. I broke the cycle just like you did. I hope you grab life with both hands Josh as we only get one shot!

Hey Primo, if you ever read this, I really think you should look into something called Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). There is a workbook on amazon for like $15. It teaches you things you should have been taught growing up. It has 4 main topics, emotion regulation or having more control over your emotions, distress tolerance or how to handle situations that trigger your anger, mindfulness or staying in the current moment instead of worrying about the past or future, and interpersonal effectiveness or how to have healthy relationships and how to set boundaries to keep toxic people away. It was designed for people who are diagnosed Borderline Personality Disorder but I feel like anyone who didn’t have a healthy childhood could really benefit. If I could get people in prison to do it, I believe 100% people would actually get rehabilitated and be able to get out and stay out. I’m not sure if the man in this video will ever see this, but if you know someone you are reminded of when you read this then research it because it might be exactly what they needed. It’s helping me and has for about two years now and it’s changing my life so I’m not an expert, just a person who understands how damaging it can be to have parents who didn’t know how to raise you.

M G I don’t know him personally. You can probably find the guy who interviewed him and he might know how to get in contact with them. You sound like you have a good heart. I’m sorry you have struggled but it seems like you are using it to strengthen you instead of letting it weigh you down. You are in the most difficult years of life in my opinion but I’m only 31 so I could be wrong. I had a hard time at least so I hope you find a way to keep it up. I suggest you check out the book I mentioned. Here is a link to amazon so you know exactly what book. Also, there are many doctors on CZcams that talk about DBT like Kati Morton.
Btw, you don’t sound like a weirdo, you sound like someone who doesn’t like to see people in pain and you try to help.
