  • The first step when learning how to scythe is learning how to move your body. At least it should be! Getting it right from the start will help reduce the risk of injuries and make your scything more efficient and fun. This video is a step-by-step guide where we add one movement at a time until we find a good rythm and feel that we are in control. Lots to think about, but once you get it, it's like riding a bike. And just as much fun!

As a 76 year old double leg amputee (below knee), I try and stay in shape. I have a food forest where only a scythe and/or sickle is permitted for the “chop and drop” we do. Scything keeps me in shape, I don’t have to use fossil fuels and it helps me re adjust me sense of time as does, of course, nature.

I’m new to scything and so glad I found your channel. Most of the stuff online shows how to mow in a way that just doesn’t feel quite right to me. As an young-ish athletic man, I connect much more with the way you incorporate Tai chi, martial arts, and fluid motion into the process. I’ll be watching many of your videos and will start practicing with these techniques right away. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Glad to hear! You are right, there is a lot of beginners doing videos as well. And you can trust that good mowers over the world use the same basic principles in a range of variations. Except for most of the Basks, who are also good mowers, but have a style where the go really folded with bent backs. They are super flexible and strong in their backs.
But one of the things with the scythe as we know it is that you can go more upright compared to the sickle!

Thank you. This helped me with getting a more uniform cut. It feels much better too. I was too stiff and mostly using my arms and shoulders. After doing a warm up using this video, I vent out and scythed yard. After I was finished, my arms felt fine and not even slightly fatigued. Transfering the load to my core and legs made it really enjoyable. Everything became better, my swath became much more even from side to side and I was able to widen my swath because of the grounded feel I had.
I really appreciate your advice. You have a world class teaching style. 👍😄

Superglad to hear that! Great! Today we will release the next part in the tutorial of mowing! As I am not a native English speaker - (I do not know if you are) but you use the word swath where I use stroke. I would like to hear your reflexion on that!

    • @Kenjiro5775

@@slattergubben6702 Your English is impeccable. I am in the US, state of Oregon. The word swath has a connotation of a sweeping path, which describes the arc of the blade well. In looking up the word, it has been associated with the scythe since its introduction here. A secondary definition applies to any blade that cuts a path, maybe an industrial combine, or wheat harvester is an example when describing it's width of cut.

Good thing I thought about wearing training clothes! 😅 I truly struggle with coordination but the adding of the "catch and throw" move in the arms helped me to not do the "ass to grass" in both directions (or neither) and it helped a lot to add the breath, both for rythm, grounding and that it's easy to just ... stop breathing when you do something complicated. 😅 I will try this again tomorrow and using the breath from the start, for now I'm going to take a shower and feel accomplished. 😁

The way my father taught me, was to keep the back straight, twist from the waist, not using the hands too much (by his teachings, you'd fail for "moving the hands too much"); Also, a test he'd use, was to whistle while scything. You should be able to sing without interruptions - if not, you're exerting yourself too much.
