- VLOG 6 - So is this the end for my motorbike tour of central Australia? there is a massive hole in the engine sump - we are stranded in the middle of now where. There is no where to get the Harley Davidson repaired !
All he had to do was unbolt the sump , ride on mates bike and get it welded up .....buy oil and back on the road .....jeez
lets see how it plays out....

There were at least as many welders out there in the desert as there were auto mechanics. Besides, who has room for tools? There's only room for canned goods.
If you are going to ride roads like that, you need to be on the right bike.
you could have still opened that can of soup by rubbing it on a rock... it worked for the oil sump :P

... Get screwdriver from your pocket tool kit ...remove sump plate then add steel putty fill hole... wait for it to
harden reinforce with duct tape both sides .reattach sump plate ...refill with spare oil you've been carrying( i Hope) .. Thinking ..youve just done an engine Stage 3 power upgrade) ..job done ..back on the road ..show goes on ....living the dream boys ...living the dream ...simple elementary road side mechanics :)
Come on guys weld it up throw in some oil, get this show back on the road.....Joels automotive in coober pedy should be able to fix this cheaper than being reamed $2500 by that shift towie.
I mostly love the videos but all these scenes talking to camera with a mouth full of food get annoying and hard to watch.

I know how you feel Danny,But from the looks of it looks like an oil pan I think you will be just fine, if it is the bottom of the engine then I can’t wait to see what do you do next. I have your next adventure ride; The Trans America Trail. It runs from the coast of North Carolina to the coast of Oregon. It’s a combination of pavement, dirt, gravel and small river crossings. You’ll need an adventure or on-off road type bike. You’ll end up driving through the “old west”. Great channel BTW, I’ve shared it as much as I could.

Bush fix it in Coober Pedy mate. Sump pan off, from the inside gasket seal some tin fixed with rivets. Junk it up and reattach. Oil and you're good till you get to Alice where you can have a new pan waiting.

1. Its an oil tank sump. Like on a car. Easily replaced.
2. Lets go down this trail....
3. There is a reason every off road bike sold has 8" of ground clearance. Minimum.
4. There is a reason that most bikes that go off road have something made in 4-5mm thick aluminium called s sump guard or sump plate.
5. Your Harley has neither.
6. It has even less ground clearance than a normal motorcycle. Even a crappy Honda CB500X.
7. No point throwing temper tantrums and your helmet for not thinking about any of the above. Unless it is for cinematic effect.
8. Best of luck.

Funnily enough they probably wouldn't know they first thing about real estate but I don't see you rubbing that in their faces. Your bike, your rules, your adventure. The show must go on!

Take a picture of the problem..we tell you how to fix it in minutes any time day or night from any wheres in the world and .problem solved.

It looks like you guys are in the middle of BF Nowhere. I got to see how this all turns out. The one thing I have learned is when bad stuff happens it forces us to reset regroup and move forward. I know as stressful this is when this is done this is the best story and you guys will laugh about this for years.

I've seen desert riders in USA carry with them JB Weld, extra motor oil, pieces of sheet metal (or even an aluminum can would work), cutter, abrasive pad and some cleaner to temporarily fix problems like a cracked or hole in the crankcase. Having those supplies with you would have saved you quite a bit of money and the problems you had with the tow truck company. I would carry those supply's even if your motorcycle has a skid plate.

I know Danny is sleeping in his own bed and the trip is well finished, but that oil sump is removeable. Much as it will be oil impregnated ally, it can be plated and welded.
Not easily on the tourers Dynas yes Not these the sump is a lot longer and cannot be removed easily Bad design If they had a plate across the frame which is a bolt on unit it could be done but to be fair to harley how often would u need to do it??? Not meant to be busj bashing

Sorry mate serious. HD's are made for boulevard cruising; showing off in a straight line. 1000 bikes exist with massive ground clearance and still have sump guards.

That hole is bloody huge. A bikes blood and cooling especially on a HD is its oil. I know your not technical, but living the dream and dreaming the dream are different things.
Next trip Danny Cary some Davcon or two part epoxy putty , (Bunnings) that’ll fix the hole until you can get it fixed properly . Nasty if your going to weld repair but it’ll plug the hole , “The show goes on “ .
