@@fredmdbud you forget that he was literally steering it. That also qualifies as guided.
Some GPS have built in protection that disable GPS module above certain speed to prevent using them in rocket guided missiles ( such as the one that you've built) Maybe try UWB localization methods ? Best of luck !
EDIT: After reading datasheets of couple cheap GPS modules it seems that they have a limit of 4G acceleration then they shut down for legal reasons. I think that's more probable cause than speed limit.
That certain speed is like mach 2+
@@iolithblue Could also be the polling rate of the consumer GPS? Depending on unit it could be 5-100 hz from what I understand?
I'm wondering is it possible that polling rate may not have been synced up with the quite short instance of max speed over the fences.
@@iolithblue I've dug deeper and NEO-6 GPS module has 4G acceleration limit and I think it's realistic to assume that the plane could've achieved that.
Most GPS systems, particularly those for export, are limited to IAS
I have had that same GPS in an rc jet doing well over 200mph with no problems.
Pro tip: The back of the craft is as important as the front when it comes to aerodynamics. Maybe try making the adapter conical next time to see if that helps.
Better pro tip is to use different wing design

I'd make a transparent nose and put the camera there. And delta wings would be nice. Straight wings are the slowest of the bunch.
@@inventiveowl395 You gave me an idea, since he wants the footage looking behind the plane, maybe putting the camera inside the plane at an angle and attach a mirror on the outside so the camera can see straight back can be a better idea? Like how those railgun tracking cameras are constructed (well minutes the rotation of the mirror).
This reminds me of how the X 15 would be released from a mothership before using its own engine to get it to Mach 6.7. So cool
X-15 is still my favorite; followed closely by the A-12/SR-71

Your goal should be somewhere around 200mph, if you want it to be the fastest foam jet.
One of my Multiplex Funjets reaches 188mph and there are many even faster ones.

Yeah 145 is not anywhere near fast enough to claim to be the worlds fastest foam jet...
I was going to say, this video is clickbait on the speed, he didnt do much research on this topic.
Funjet ultra is doing 250 mph plus. OMGOOLIEBIRD channel posted it 6 ~ years ago. No way is this guy going to beat that without an onboard motor or a rocket engine 10x the size of the one he's pushing here.
I am always watching fast projects like this! Thanks for the shout! I did 401kmh with a Funjet, but another chap has since gone 440kmh! I might have another crack at the Funjet one day, Im using 12-14s in that size airframe now @9kw, it would easily fit in a funjet!

Would love to see a third part where you launch it from another bigger plane and use a gyro to help you keep it straight. I think targeting 200 mph would be very fun as it will need to be more reliable as well.
Insane results! I wonder if a big part of the reason the GPS recorded excessively low is because its sample rate is low enough that it didn't catch the full turns and thus misjudged the distance traveled. It would be handy if you could adjust the sample rate on it

Amazing how a toy that started out looking like a P-80 Shooting Star, has ended up looking like the prototype V-1 bomb that had a pilot for development of the airframe.
Really reminded me of the Japanese Oka by the end.

I love what you do and your endless enthusiasm, juts a question on this series, other than the Bell X1 when did you last see a high speed aircraft with a straight wing? Maybe a swept wing would be better? Keep up the great work
Pilatus PC-9 has straight wings.
I think that would only make a difference if you are going supersonic? Maybe the wings could be thinner though?
@@simonabunker I dunno lots of post war subsonic aircraft had swift ants, teh Gnat, hunter similar, harrier, etc. But you might be right

I saw the thumbnail as a scale MXY-7 and figured the landings would be interesting.
I'm not sure how reliable the Velocity from GPS is. They use the dopper effect to get the speed which accuracy is debatable. Aircraft to this day use piot tubes for airspeed (also a thing bc if you fly into the wind gps is ground speed). And there are ones for drones aswell with i2c connections. Just a suggestion. Awesome video!!
Radio waves are effectively moving at the speed of light so there is no measurable doppler effect.
I would have liked to see you testing the GPS to replicate the failure.

The GPS is irrelevant - this is an aircraft, not a car. He needs to measure airspeed.
@@aGabay even air speed is kinda tough one. A super light plane can take off at 0 ground speed in high wind for example. Is that plane moving fast? No, it's the wind blowing fast.
@@castform57 you are right and wrong. Yes, from a geographical stand point it's not moving. But from the aerodynamic stand point it is moving! Pilots use airspeed to fly the plane, ground speed is used only for navigation.

You can see a major issue at 1:02 - Your wings and ailerons are wobbling under excess load. I had this issue all the time when running foam models with electric motors that had 5-10x the recommended wattage, great fun btw, nothing quite like seeing a drivetrain being ripped out of a poorly reinforced foam fuselage..
Anyway, the best solution I found for wobbly wings was a carbon fiber spar. I used 0.5mm and 1mm thick flatstock that was wider than the thickness of the wing. i then cut the wing all the way through lengthwise and used contact cement (UHU POR) to glue everything back together, then dremeled off the excess carbon fiber material. You would not believe how stiff such a wing was, afterwards. For ailerons, I reinforced the root of the wing cutout in a similar fashion and then used fiberglassed balsa ailerons instead of the original foam ones. They tend to hold the torsion forces much more reliably.
the ailerons are wobling because of the gyro correcting and over correcting itself at a very fast speed i think
it's not because of load, it's the gyro overcompensation.
Pro tip: put a live camera on the front of the plane to see where it is at also so you don't need to look up
Great series. I love speed as well. I'm building a very small boat to see how fast I can get it going starting with a 25 HP outboard motor. Then maybe a bigger outboard depending on how the boat operates at speed.
Have you plugged the boosters with compressed cat litter to prevent the engine casing from ejecting from last time? The reason I am suggesting this is to make a more powerful and completed burn of all the propellent the engine has, like the A10-P.
I'd like to see what speed could be achieved with a swept wing design. Maybe even a Delta wing. It's that straight wing slowing things down.
If you do ever come back to this project, you should make a "catapult" launch system like they have on air craft carriers
It reminds me of 2 planes the x-15 and the MXY Ohka/ cherry blossom with the 2 tail stabilizer and pretty small wings also the camera looking like the cockpit near the back that really looks like it
Fantastic video! I would love to work with you on part 3 of this project if that is possible somehow?! I have also wanted to try a rocket for a long time. I think you could go way beyond 400kmh even with foam. A Funjet airframe is already capable of 400kmh+, so we can easily build something better than a Funjet. Do you have access to bigger motors or is the max legal size? I know Ceasaroni do some huge motors, but don't know about the laws here in the Uk. Do you want a colab for pt3? I actually don't see why we couldn't challenge the outright record for pt4.. It would be possible go beyond transonic with a small delta and the biggest motor we could get hold of, maybe work with a licensed rocketry specialist to get access to the big boy motors!

Maybe the gps sampled at 1Hz and wasn't able to get a good fix on speed within a short curved flight. I wonder if the rapid change in altitude affected the gps accuracy. The gps receivers I've used were quite slow to update altitude changes.

Looks just like the Yokosuka MXY-7 Ohka which is a Japanese kamikaze rocket plane from ww2. A horrible thing to be compared to but I saw the resemblance instantly

For the camera mounting, I was expecting maybe mounting it in the nose of the aircraft, with a clear aerodynamic cone to cover it. Your idea is much better though.

Great job James. As entertaining as it would be to see, I'm glad it didn't end in a flaming pile of foam and electronics.
A propeller in the nose would remove the need for a drop and still have aligned center of thrust and center of gravity. Also a wing high up on the fuselage or a strong dihedral wing angle could minimize wing strikes on landing and make the plane more stable in flight.
The sound it makes when the rocket ignites is absolutely beautiful ❤

Just a little idea for the camera: place it inside the body in an upright position and attach a mirror at 45º to the lens, so it still records back footage, but now with a much smaller footprint
...or two mirrors for Ye Periscope effect if mounting it flat would be helpful

The engines pop out because it is a rocket motor, so the ejection charge fires after the engine(Usually to pop open the parachute)
maybe you could cut the air intake that sticks out on the sides of instead of filing it with expanding foam because its lighter and makes the plane narrower and more aerodynamic. i dont know if it really works its just an idea
Terrific job - incredibly fast and very precarious.
I would say that leaving the camera off could easily gain you 20mph. Creating a clear naca shaped shroud over it should gain you most of that speed. The gains from the shortened wings and the sharpened trailing edges of the wings would be nothing compared to the blunt body of the camera sticking out the top of the airframe.
Great result with a fairly low tech build.

You could also try to search for another rc pilot and let him hook your plane into the air. In this case you already have good speed and the right direction.

1). Recess the motor into the fuselage,
2). Make the motor mount hollow to allow for airflow throught the mount,
3). Open the air ducts and let the venturi effect increase thrust

You could also add a servo onto the plane and make a vent into the edf that when you would flip a switch it would close the vent allowing for the aerodynamics that you need for speed while also allowing for independent flight before and after the rocket is ignited

Use the smaller lighter SKYRC SK-500023 GPS + GLONASS Performance Analyzer for more reliable speed measurement.
Just an idea (if you have the money) you should try and get a headset and a small camera for the front so you have better visuals for the plane
