- Train sequence from Back to the Future III. Filmed in the Red Hills just outside Jamestown, California. The steam engine is Sierra #3, a 1891 Rogers class locomotive. Old #3 has been recently repaired and carries passengers each summer at Railtown 1897 State Park in Jamestown.

I love how Doc throws on the engineer's hat before he starts pulling the whistle cord. He's like a kid at heart.

The final shot/scene is the most beautiful to me. Where the old creation of engineering is approaching the new creation of how far we've come : ) Seeing the 1 of the past behind the 1 of the future/ present. 😌💕 As some1 in the science/engineering field myself, it makes me proud to be human and grateful to God.
That locomotive is putting out some mighty black smoke for burning firewood.
Keen eye. This engine is actually oil fired, but in almost every movie its been in, its been dressed up as a wood burner. The large amount of wood in the tender is to cover up the oil tank.
Thought so. Also seemed strange the tender is 100% full of wood after the locomotive had travelled some distance.
I think the first oil-fired steam locomotive debuted in the 1890s. Since this takes place earlier, the steamer would have to be a wood burner.
The movie is set in 1885, and the locomotive is an 1891 model
This has got to be not only the best part in the entire Back To The Future series but the most EPIC train scene EVER!!!

The locomotive used in this film is sierra railroad 4-6-0 ten Wheeler #3 built in 1891 for the sierra railroad the engine has been used in dozens of movies and tv shows including petticoat junction, Casey Jones, and the apple dumpling gang rides again, to name a few, the locomotive's whistle was also used as the whistle for the polar express.
Yhjygghugghu
Also for the fact that this movie star was from New Jersey.
Speaking of Casey Jones, the real Cannonball Express locomotive was a Rogers built 4-6-0 #382 & in the 1950 Disney version, the locomotive Casey Jones or should I say Casey Jones 2.0 drives is an american standard 4-4-0 with a #2 named Johnny.

ERROR AT 2:24 trains of that era did not have air brakes .....when the train starts to uncouple you can see the air hose still together, also trains of that era did not have the modern AAR knuckle couplers
Knuckle Couplers actually go a lot farther back.
the one's you're thinking of disappeared over 2 centuries ago.
+Paul Rude Back to the future is set 1885, westinghouse air brakes came into being in 1868, in addition to that you have "straight air" brake systems and vacuum brake systems that also existed around that time. The modern coupler has its basis in the Janney coupler of 1873, you would have had "knuckle" or "semi-automatic" couplers in that era easily, just not type E's.
I think it took several decades in the late 1800s for the railroads to adopt air brakes & convert from link-and-pin to knuckle couplers.

2:55 still gives me chills occasionally; I think it has something to do with seeing the front of my favorite car, that epic but subtle theme that's played, and the fact that a (virtually) century-old piece of technology is coming to help them get back to the future. Simply awesome!
My goodness, I love these films so much (and that train is truly timeless)!

The locomotive used for this film--Sierra Railway 3--has been featured in around 40 films, alongside such names as Clint Eastwood, Gary Cooper, Dennis Quaid, James Stewart, William Shatner, Drew Barrymore, George C. Scott, Burt Reynolds, Michael J. Fox, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Dom DeLuise, John Cleese, and Robert Duvall. It is considered the "movie star" of all locomotives. It also has derailed 3 times throughout its 100+ years.
The engine was also almost scrapped permanently. It was literally taken apart for a while, but Clint Eastwood played an important role in salvaging it through fundraising efforts to get it restored and put back together. He literally did say that to him, the engine was like an old friend, since he had been featured in so many films alongside it. Ever since 2010, Sierra Railway 3 operates on tourist excursions in California.

2 things about this scene that bug me. 1: The fact that Doc never seemed to consider how the stopping a train and taking the engine would have possibly impacted future events, what if someone important was on that train, or needed to catch it to be somewhere for a crucial event in history? And 2, How the hell did Marty learn to ride a horse so quickly!!! It takes ages to be able to ride that proficiently!
Шшд
something in San Francisco would happen or change in 1985, if it was the engineer, designers then some of the sky scraper wouldn't exist or the Golden Gate bridge would never be built.
I can't believe the movie will turn 30 this year

in the next scene Doc explains what will happen when Engine 3 gets up to speed in the cab and in the car they had a Steam Gage to tell how hot the fire will get and according to Doc they needed to hit 90 before the gage reaches 2,000 BTUs because we know what happens when a Steam reaches that temperature IT BLOWS UP! sit back and enjoy

the music was like in jurassic park
Lucky the DeLorean is the same gauge as the train. 🙂
Doc had to do a careful measurment when putting these steal wheels on the Delorean the the reason that the windmill is a point of no return because the DeLorean has no brake so if you stop the train, the car will roll freely down the track and there no stopping it until you hit the end of the Ravine bridge.

I like how doc tries to be a good role model for Marty
00
Wow
That us one beautiful locomotive, although I read they were never really designed to go at speed over about 60 odd, without axle damage occurring. Awesome movie though!
The rod and axle bearings couldn't take speeds much higher than 60-70, they would get hot. It was also possible for the engine to throw a rod when run at high speed.
Most importantly though, the driver in the movie wasn't kidding when he says you need a fire hotter than the blazes of hell to do it. Locomotives prior to the 1930s often had difficulty making enough steam for sustained high speed or high power operation.
But if you had magic presto logs like Doc and it had no carriages to pull, could it get up to 88mph? Or is it just impossible
@@The12thDimension.
You COULD. That's the beauty of steam power. Other modern power systems tend to not work that well by simply overcharging, you have to tinker with the system to do that.
But steam engines, you can shove more coal in and it will preform better untill it exploads or something breaks. It will produce more wear, but that's all you need to do.
Famously the ships that went to rescue the Titanic operated at much over thier top speed by shoving more coal and turning off hot water for the passengers.
@@The12thDimension. the presto logs weren't magic. It was compressed wood that was chemically treated to burn hotter. I'm guessing Doc had some combustible chemicals in the logs that made them burn hotter
@@Stuingtion Compressed sawdust + a chemical oxidizer + a binder material. The oxidizer is key, makes it burn far hotter than you could get using air alone.
Unfortunately the line about using that in his forge, in real life that would not work. Forges need hot embers to operate, logs like those only ever make hot gas. But a locomotive's boiler will steam happily on volumes of hot gas, so its a good fit here.
Doc says its a science experiment LOL

+AntiPCTruthseeker fixed point in time perhaps
+AntiPCTruthseeker when you live in a time without descent toilet paper.... the space time continuum can shove it down the toilet.

"ENOUGH, I'm gonna destroy this thing anyway, not to mention we NEED to get back to 1985 pronto!" 😂
AntiPCTruthseeker wiiiiio
Well, it's still better to go back to an alternate 1985 rather than be stuck in 1885 forever. At least they'll have the right equipment and technology to fix the time machine if they need to go back and change history again.
It looks like the conductor is gonna need another engine.
2:48 this scene looks familiar. is that the polar express scene when the hero boy whistling the train?
Yep. Thats correct
Notice how the engine's number was changed from 3 to 131.
John Greene That was easy to do. They just put a 1 on each side of the 3 to do that.
When it was run on the tracks between Hooterville & Pixley, the '3' became an '8'.
Haha...haven't noticed that! Possibly the difference between the actual locomotive and the model locomotive during shooting.
