Taylor 114CE is the only acoustic you'll ever need, all else is gilding the lilly. My advice after 30 years of playing is get a rock solid decent guitar and then stop focusing on gear and focus only on playing and learning something new every day.

The Spaniel Inquisition You've got to stop. You're making too much sense and giving too much valuable and sound advice from someone in this world that is actually qualified to give it. There is no room for that on the Internet.

The Spaniel Inquisition The 114 is a great guitar. You get so much guitar for the money. Same with the 214. The problem is they both have 1 11/16” but width and if you have big hands, play finger style or both, it’s uncomfortable to play.

Let me tell you, I had my mind set on a Martin for years. I was at guitar center playing a bunch of martins and Taylor's and I had basically made up my mind about some 600 dollar Martin dreadnought that sounded beautifully. However, they had this 1 Taylor I was interested in that I saw was locked up on the wall. I asked if they could unlock it and let me play around with it. I sat down, positioned myself and played a G chord. It was like HEAVEN to my ears. The sounds were so bright and crisp yet soft. It wasn't as bassy as the Martin was. Not only did it sound phenomenal, it was very very comfortable to play. I know this because I've always had troubles with bar chords yet playing a bar chord on this guitar was very easy! I've also enjoyed the simplicity of Taylor's. They are very simply designed guitars yet they have that Taylor flair with the pick guard and the brand at the top. Not to mention, the volume knobs on the outside always look very clean to me as an acoustic/electric. Needless to say, I went home with the 114ce and have never been happier with a guitar. Martin's and Taylor's will always be quality guitars however, I don't think one is better than the other. I think it depends on the preference of sounds and tones along with the comfort. If you want a older and deeper sound, get a Martin. If you want a softer but crisper and brighter sound get a Taylor. I've fell in love with my Taylor and I look forward to playing the shit out of it.

@@mikechivy I bought a new Taylor 414ce like you see here. Like all Taylors, it's set up extremely well. It's very precisely constructed - so much so that it's almost robotic. It has a great sound, of course. However, I bought a Gibson J-45 Standard just the other day. To my surprise, it actually has better playability (and not just because it has a shorter scale length) than the Taylor, and I love the sound of it so much. 2 different sounds. Both sound beautiful in their own right. It may seem unfair and like comparing apples and oranges since they're pretty different guitars and everyone has their own sonic preferences, but I actually think the J-45 sounds way better.

I have been playing guitar for over 25 years now. Acoustic, flamenco, Electric, etc. Anyway. I am from Québec, Canada. Try to buy local. I had a couple of Seagull, even the Pepino D'Agostino signature. It's okay. 2000$. I was looking for an acoustic guitar that...sound big! I tried all of them. As I sais, being from Québec, try to buy local so I tried Boucher. Dont get me wrong. Amazing guitars. But then I tried Martin, and then Taylor. 7 series, 6.....then 114ce. Didnt looke at the Price. I could not stop playing it. Simply amazing. 1200$ CAD. My advice, if you can afford expensive guitar, go ahead, but I think for the Price, Taylor 114ce is the best option on the market. Don't be a poser. Be a musician.

The fingerpicking comparison at 18:45 (114ce) and 19:33 (414ce) conclusively shows the stronger overtones and even balance on the 414. The 414 sounds refined, and more like a high end acoustic guitar. The 114 with its strong midrange and less overtones is more suited for bluesy style. I like them both.

    • @shivtea5996

The issue is that the mics are in different positions for the mics. On the left the mic is over the soundhole, making it warmer and boomier, on the right it is thinner. I think with a good mic and EQ you could make the 114 sound like the more expensive 414.

When I bought my 416ce Spring Limited, I also sat with an 800 series at the same time, A/B'ing them as in this video (it was either the 814ce or 816ce, can't remember now). The 800 was nicer in its appointments and everything, but the 416 just spoke to me more and sounded better. It also worked with my singing voice better than the 800. I was willing to drop the extra on the more expensive guitar, but it's all about what works for you, a better fit. In this video, the 114 sounded superior in every instance- but of course I'm not in the room.

I had a chance to get a floor model at the end of 2014 for around $1300 out the door and I'm sick I passed up on it. It was in perfect condition too. I've grown to really like the 414 and love the tone of the ovangkol. In the last year my wrists and hands have started really bothering me when playing and pretty much all of my guitars have boat necks, which is what I prefer. I don't have this issue with Taylor's. There have been a couple of occasions where I've spent a couple of hours playing a Taylor and had almost no issues with my wrist/hand. They are so easy and comfortable to play. Anyway, the 414 does indeed have a sweet tone and just works for all styles in my opinion, but truly excels at fingerstyle (again, just my opinion).

114CE - Brighter, less balanced across Lows to High
414CE - Not as bright, more balanced across Lows and Highs
That is exactly why I went with a 324CE versus a 100 Series, both are great but I prefer the balance and warmth of the Mahogany top of the 324ce but you can't go wrong really with Taylor, I have never picked up an acoustic off the rack and it just felt so good and played and sounded so well!

I'm curious, what pick thickness do you each use? Are they the same because that can have such a huge impact on the tone.
I find even just changing from a .60 to a .73 is quite noticable, and if you go .90 and up the tone continues to get darker.

They both sound very good. I've played both. Sound is subjective however the 414CE is better in many ways. The tone is far more controlled and focused (less overtones.) The fit and finish is much nicer. You feel like you are playing something special- because you are. All Taylors feel good to play. I would prefer a 714ce (next model up from the similar 414ce.) I would however only buy one that is a 2017 or older. Many people, and I much prefer the old X bracing (far more bass) vs. the new V bracing in most of the new Taylor guitars, 3xx, 4xx, 7xx, 8xx series.
That said, the 114CE is a great value and it sounds very nice. For a first or second guitar, it will do the job very well. What I found was that after a while (hours) the tone was a little too unfocused so the mids get scooped a bit. You hear a lot of chiming/ringing on the 114. It sounds very good at first, but it lacks the depth of the 414. Over time, the real wood on the 414 will open up and sound even better. On the other hand, the benefit of laminates on the 114 is stability. It's less likely to crack over time. Both are good choices. If you are on a budget, grabbing a slightly used 114CE for

  • @texrex4580

I purchased a 114CE last year, chosen from about a dozen acoustics. Unfortunately the feedback, when used live, into a decent PA system, was uncontrollable. I tried sound hole plugs and even a couple of different PA systems but nothing solved it. Taylor kindly replaced all the electronics but it was the same result. I regret not keeping the guitar because it's acoustic sound was so exceptional. Maybe it was just an overly lively example of the 114CE. I never found anything that came close to the quality of the sound from it.

I gotta say. I have a 114e, and absolutely love it. From watching the video, the 114 (to me at least) sounds better on almost all aspects. The only thing the 414 has going for it is that it's a lot prettier and maybe has a little more nuanced sound, but nothing that would make a huge difference.

DerpyDackles42 idk, I love the simplicity to the 114. With the black trim that matches the volume knobs, it's a very cleaner look. I'm not too keen about the white trim on the 414. It's subjective but my 114 is absolutely beautiful. It's magical in a way because it looks so simple yet plays like HEAVEN.

    Wouldn’t a comparison of the 114 and a 314 be more appropriate?

I have a 114ce I got like 10 years ago and I still prefer and play it more over my more expensive 214-CE K DLX. The 114ce is just so bright and loud - its sounds amazing.
The only downside on the 114ce is its not laminated so I have a ton of dings and scratches on it.

I have a 100 series 6 string and 12 string, both times I went to buy them I had budgeted for a higher grade model, but preferred the 100 series. I suspect the lack of bracing in the back means the soundwaves inside are not inhibited by the braces, and I am absolutely sure that the lack of varnish on the 100 series means that the bodies and especially the tops, are freer to vibrate. I'm not a precision player, if I was I might appreciate a higher series model, but I find the 100 series to sound a lot freer and pleasantly rowdy. I wouldn't trade up.

I just played both of these.... I liked the 114 better as well. I liked the varnish finish and with the ever so slightly narrower nut I did think the neck felt slimmer. I wrote it off as a Mexico vs american made but I did enjoy the slimmer neck. The tone of the 314 sounds better as a stand alone instrument, but I really think the 114 would sound better in a mix.
I'm getting the 114 for a treat yourself b-day present.

The mic positions change what you hear from the guitar. You can take the same guitar, record it a the 12th fret, then at the bridge, and the recordings will sound different from each other, it could even sound like different guitars. For these to have any worth in comparing two different guitars, you need to have consistency in mic placement.

    • @TheBigDean18
      @TheBigDean18 Před 8 lety +1

That's why you hear the true difference when they switch guitars, because you hear the guitars at the same placement.

Of coarse, but I mean you shouldn't compare guitars from different videos, by different CZcams channels. The audio tracks could vary too much. The Acoustic Letter channel did tons of reviews of guitars, all in the same way. Another thing is that CZcams condenses the audio, so what we hear is slightly different than what they heard in the room as they played it.

Wow, in the 5 years since this was recorded the 114 has dropped in price and the 414 has substantially increased in price. Inflation and demand does odd things...

  • @jayman1338

414 sounds fuller for sure but 114 sounds pretty dang good for the price gap. Now days the 100 series Taylor has been discontinued and now they’re just doing all 200 series so the 200 series is very nice. It’s that bolt on neck that’s awesome too with out of the box perfect action. For the price of the 200 series as starting at $1200.00 you can’t beat that.
Another great deal in the guitar world is the Alvarez MASTERWORKS guitars. Starting at only $700.00 you get a really nice guitar with all solid wood construction. Top, back & sides, and like the Taylor, the Alvarez has some pretty good action as well.
But yeah I’d love to have a 200 series Taylor. Great guitars for a great price.
