Everyone deserves to hear this. There is some bleed-over, but this is from the LA Woman album, which was recorded with live takes, so that's just the way it is.
At first their managers at the recording studio didn't think this song had what it took. Their comments were that this was simply "Cocktail Music" that it didn't have what it took. But little did they know that this song would take everyone into different dimensions. Ray Manzarek was very creative in putting the keyboard music together. It was also a creative masterpiece by the "Doors".
No, all of the Members made up The Doors. Not just Jim Morrison or Ray, but also Robbie and John, each member added something which made the band what it still is to this day, and what it will remain as long as there is music.
"You have to be open to the energy. If you can open your heart to the energy, that great love energy, of this entire universe, good things will happen to you. BUT, you've gotta believe. You've gotta believe in the goodness." - Ray Manzarek
I always found the Doors to be very hypnotizing. Don't get me wrong, I love the contributions of every member (Jim's daunting yet seductive voice, John's perfect beat and catchy rhythm, Robby's fantastic flamenco among other great styles)! But, I could listen to Ray's solos for hours. All elements (Drums, Voice, Guitar, Organ/Piano) put together meshed so perfectly, but the Doors would not have had enough magic to ride on without Ray. At least, that's how I feel. Shame about their disputes, too.
Ray was a regular at my Olvera street cafe(Juanita’s). He was the only celebrity of many who have dined there that I asked for an autograph. I actually traded him lunch for it . I told him , you’re a musical legend! He was totally unpretentious!
Thanks Warner Music Group for not pulling the video even though it matched 3rd party content.. very cool of them, everyone deserves to be able to hear it.
There wouldn't have been a rock band called the doors if there hadn't been a man named Ray Manzarek. The doors was his brain child. It took his vision & organization skills Plus Morrison's poetry & persona to come up with all the rest that made the doors legendary.
This mix in .5 speed has saved me 44 years of frustration learning the riffs and the harmonic digression Ray D. Manzarek does in the middle. I now have it as part of me... and its fun to play....
I was 20 when LA Woman was released. I was already a big doors fan. This song changed my outlook on life like no other. Am still haunted by it to this day..
LA Woman is one of the best rock albums ever, between 30 first of them. For me is the number one and is the qquintessential Rock and perfect example of the magic of Music as art. Great songs, incredible singing, beautiful soloing, superb drumming. It is a milestone in Rock music.
I have been a fan of The Doors from ever since their first album came out. "Riders on the Storm" happens to be my favorite piece by The Doors. I have listened to several versions of this song and I find that this version with Ray isolated on the keyboards to be the best. I should mention that back in the 60 while I was still in high school when "Riders..." came out I had a high frequency hearing lost with both ears so I did not realize there were alot of very high notes. Eventually I lost all of my hearing in both ears. Now I have bi-lateral cochlear implants. A few months ago the two external processors were upgraded for the forth time and with each upgrade the sound quality has gotten better. My current processors are bluetooth compatable and I have an audio transmitter that I can plug into a headphone jack. Needless to say the sound quality of this version is unbelievable as I can hear the crisp sounds of all of the lows to the highest highs.
The doors were 1 of my favorite rock bands, I saw them in 1970 at the spectrum in Phila. In my CD collection I have 4 full collections of these bands-The Byrds-The doors- The Monkees-Paul Revere & The Raiders, these collections are from start to finish.7-2022.
ray is god. hes eternal. wanna know the prayer? 528 mhz. oooo eternal one...god of all of eternity. save me. from these rulers of unrighteousness. and RELEASE me. from their clutchesforthwith.. and a crystal ship magically appears. and sparkles. and he takes you away. like calgon kinda.
Ray grew up on the South Side of Chicago and knew many of the sights I did growing up(although he was 17 years older). This makes me feel a connection to the greatest American Rock group of all time(Only surpassed by The Beatles who are not American). Ray's driving keyboards and Jim's haunting voice make the Doors soar above their contemporaries.(and Robbie ain't bad, either.)
Ray Manzarek will always be the greatest keyboard player of all time. He certainly was a wiz on those keyboards. He solved the problem when there wasn't bass player in the group. He did it by using a smaller keyboard that played only bass notes. But he also had his Vox organ. Ray Manzarek was also a great piano player. The man will always live on as a legend. The music of The Doors will always live on.
Yes agreed very much, Just some insight, the small bass keyboard he used was a fender rhodes bass, and I agree, his piano work was also incredible in songs such as Crystal Ship.
Bearz thanks for sharing your info & insight with me. Ray Manzarek was definitely the greatest keyboard player That ever lived. I don't think there will be a another one like him. Thanks again for sharing & you have a wonderful day.
This is just sublime. . . I learned so much from Ray's independent hands technique. Bass lines with the left hand, chords and melodies with the right. . . What an amazing way to accompany yourself, or play 2 parts in a band. . . Freaking genius. . . Muchas gracias amigo. . . Bendiciones. . .
They did till they got it right. Ray even laughed at his mistakes. I would have loved to work with him and I'm into jazz. Talent and humility, Ray is a great example.
I DONT play ray often but when I do I crank it up on my ultralimted and the whole neighborhood plays it too. Long live ray m. What a gift you were a musical genius brilliant and bad ta dah bone and raw tah dah steel Rip
we would only pick up the good F.M. late at night. i would keep the volume down low as to not wake anyone. 13-15 years old. this makes my eyes water. im pushing 50 now.
My fave all time song. Ethereal, menacingly foreboding yet uplifting. A true masterpiece. And then there's the Rhodes. This song should have been sent out on Voyager. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for sharing this. It gives us a true sense of how his genius truly impacted rock n roll music forever. I love the occasional snare drum bleed over too, CHEERS!!!!
Fender Rhodes was made for this song! Great to hear it soloed, but the other thing that hearing this reveals is how fantastic the interplay is between Ray and Robby in the solo, where the guit and rhodes sound like one part, with a very similar tone - when all those subtle little guitar stabs are absent, you notice how much they add.
Ray Manzarek genio de la música .. en mi alma ese teclado 🎹❤ .. esta música y tanto Ray como Jim son místicos y eternos En 🇦🇷 amamos the doors ❤ Saludos from Bs As ( la capital del rockandroll )
I think there was a sense in the studio that this would turn out to be one of their immortal creations..showing off the real musicianship and pushing Jim's vocals into a relaxed but meaningful bond. Timeless!
Possibly the finest piece of pure jazz/rock I've ever heard
"We gotta put some jazz to it, make it dark" - Ray Manzarek

This song is magic, the doors sound as a whole collective are unmatched
Ray Manzarek and Richard Wright - for me, these two draw some of the most smooth, sexy and elegant keyboard lines in the history of rock.
renatodavid1 Amen to that.
Amen. So sad cancer took them early. Ray actually played his nurses and doctors a private concert before he passed.

Garth Hudson and John paul Jones are worthy mentions as well.
The backbone of the Doors right there!

He was the hinge to the doors.

One of my favourite musicians ever. I hope he knew that he wasn't in Jim's shadow and we saw his talents.
Each member had their own special contribution to The Doors ~ all are magnificent and fit so well together!

It takes the song to a climax and then quickly dissolves it into nothingness. I love that part too.
Ray Manzarek 1939-forever
That keyboard was as epic in rock as Jim's voice. What Ray painted on the keyboard was soul catharsis.

Sweet.... The Rhodes is one of the best sounding artifact in the world
Absolutely, I love that instrument.
This is stunning. I'm not ashamed to say it moved me to tears. That solo man, what a trip!
True that
Here a other one moved to tears by this Manzarek solo!
He is so underated as a composer ! Ray Manzarek's sound is what truly gave The Doors their mysterious haunting sound. Yeah.
Absolutely phenomenal. Nothing flashy, just slow, tasteful blues and a memorable solo.
Absolutely love this one of the greatest songs ever made and Rays amazing "rain" on the Rhodes is timeless
Learned this note for note when I was 15-16, I still have a LOT of Ray in my playing. God bless him.
The pinnacle of Ray's greatness. RIP.
I have to agree on its greatness, but disagree about the pinnacle. Yes, The River Knows is Ray's top relatively "unknown" piece of genius.
"Ray the Man......Zarek" Thanks Dude! ....for understanding.
Just simply PURE GENIUS.
I met Ray briefly. What an easy-going, nice person.
Happy Born Day, Ray ! You are my musical hero and inspiration. No one like you.
My groomsmen and I walked down the aisle to this. That's how much of an impact their music has had on me. Best music ever!
That’s the coolest tune to walk with your boys too! Hahaha “girl you’ve gotta love your man”
