Budget Vs High End Bikepacking Setup - How Much Do You Need To Spend?

  • In this video I was joined by Ross as we set out to see if you can get out and enjoy a bikepacking trip on a limited budget. We first began by acquiring a new bike. After a little searching on Facebook marketplace we found a bike that seemed ideal, a Raleigh Pioneer 120 which we believe dates from the late 90’s or early 00’s. After completing a little basic maintenance on the bike we set off on a one night trip in a nice area local to where we live. I used the new bike with a cheap bikepacking setup, and I set Ross up with all of my nice, high end, bikepacking and lightweight camping equipment that I have acquired over the years, and which make up my current bikepacking setup for long distance tours.
    Over the course of the trip I assess how the cheap setup compares with the more expensive setup that I am used to, and we share our thoughts on what you need to get into bikepacking, and where best to spend your money.

    Just finished watching your GDMBR trip for third time. The most wonderful version on the tube. The way you speak to the camera is different than all others, it's like you are having a conversation with me ( the viewer ) , not all mundane and factoid like. Wonderful editing by Ross as well. You truly make the trip look spectacular. Thank you again for this contribution.

    People are often “over-biked” like they are over-everything-elsed. Last year I bought an old Moulton Stowaway for a song, and had a lot of fun stripping off the old paint and rust, applying a new coat of British Racing Green paint, and upgrading the stem, brake, and saddle. The rest of the bike, including the 2 speed rear hub were left original. I find this bike to be an excellent commuter, and with it’s front and rear racks, would be a good bikepacking rig. I remember a story of Brit who took Stowaway on a round-the-world tour, only to have the bike stolen in Australia. He ended up settling there (I guess he couldn’t get away without his bike), and, as far as I know, is still there today.

      I could easily get into bike restorations. Maybe in the future. Great story about the Brit settling in Australia. It's amazing how fate works. Cheers 👍

    I had a Raleigh Record 10 speed that I bought from working a paper route back in the mid 70's in SE Wisconsin. I loved that bike sooooo much. I did charity runs with it. Rode back and forth to town. It was so nice. Until somebody stole it. That was a heart break! Fine simple machine. Then I bought a Triumph Bonneville and things were better!

    • @matryderadventures
      @matryderadventures  Před 6 dny

      You seem to have a loyalty to British two wheelers. Sad to hear your Raleigh was stolen. Do you still have the Bonneville?

    • @NoFeeArea
      @NoFeeArea Před 4 dny

      @@matryderadventures I sold that a while ago. Back in the 70's we had a Raleigh shop in the next town. It was either a Schwinn, Kent or Raleigh. Easy choice. Then everyone and their brother (and sister) in Wisconsin had Harley's. I have always turned from the crowds. It feels better. Besides the Triumph sounds better (pop, pop, pop downshifting) and is zippy quick.

    Superb stuff!I love old bikes, some of the old Raleigh bikes are a joy if you are prepared to put a bit of work in, I love riding an old Raleigh racer, a blast from the past, minimalist. Lovely video and some super scenery at a leisurely pace, spot on!. I never cease to be amazed at how variable car drivers are towards a bike, you are very exposed on a bike to cars / vans etc. Not exactly a big ask to respect other road users and give a bit of space to a much smaller road user. Thanks for sharing, happy riding!

    Derailleurs on a cheap or expensive bike packing bikes are nightmare as they are Flintstones technology. The best is a Rohloff IHG or Pinion gear box either with Gates belt drive which work perfectly mile after mile.
