- Introductory video to "Book Rants by John Julius Reel". I introduce readers to the content and objectives of my rants, while recommending five of my all-time favorite contemporary and classic memoirs.
Memoirs mentioned:
A False Spring, by Pat Jordan
A Childhood: The Biography of a Place, by Harry Crews
Down These Mean Streets, by Piri Thomas
Confessions of a Failed Southern Lady, by Florence King
And When Did You Last See Your Father? by Blake Morrison
Factory of Light: Life in an Andalucian Village, by Michael Jacobs
Black Boy, by Richard Wright
Out of Africa, by Isak Dinesen (or Karen Blixen)
The Summing Up, by Somerset Maugham

There are several others …Manchild in the promised land … stands out . I agree Down these mean streets was exceptional.
Never heard of MANCHILD IN THE PROMISED LAND. One of the reasons I started this channel was in the hopes of getting recommendations like this, so thanks.
Thanks for the tip of reading memoirs. If I may suggest an old book, but modern, I would suggest “History of my life” by Giacomo Casanova, despite is about life in the eighteenth century, it will be a great lesson and a lot of fun, may be a reduced edition at the beginning
That's a great recommendation! Thanks.
John, the Basketball Diaries by Jim Carroll is highly regarded I haven't read it myself though.
I've been meaning to read that book for years. Thanks for the reminder.
