    Hey Guys, Here's a planting guide for Zones 5-7. These are crops you can plant in August and harvest all fall and some you can even overwinter in a hoop house or cold frame and have something to harvest in your garden all winter long!! My July Video has almost 600,000 views. Let's see if we can do even better with this video!! Happy Gardening!!

      Hi, I'm new to gardening and just started watching your videos. I'm in the central midlands of SC (I think zone 8-A?). I want to plant Brussels Sprouts, spinach and squash...is it to late for me?

    • @StoneyAcresGardening
      @StoneyAcresGardening  Před 5 lety +3

      Brussels Sprouts and Spinach should be fine. In Zone 8 A summer squash would still be okay (zucchini, crookneck, etc). But I'm not sure about winter squashes. Do you have frost and if so when?

      @@StoneyAcresGardening Hi there! We wont have frost until January, hard cold is only 6-8 weeks long.

      Angela Smith ....give it a try....that's how you learn in your zone...
      Might be too hot overall tho..look up bolting in your gardening references....bugs too will be hard as well...
      But just try everything you want...be mindfully of plant needs and spacing.....
      Keep Growing....

    Down here in zone 8-9 I plant my fall garden at the start of sept. I plant mostly greens, mustards, collards, kale, turnips, beets, cabbage, chard. If I don't plant them early enough they won't grow during the winter but larger plants continue to grow and be harvest able all winter long.It's kind of a dance. Plant to early and they go to seed before winter. Too late and they won't grow in the cold weather. I also plant broccoli and cauliflower although the cauliflower takes up a lot of space for small harvest but the leaves are also edible. Lettuce does well as the temperatures fall later in the year. I've never had much success with spinach but I've found that new Zealand spinach does well in the greenhouse year round. Fortunately I can grow tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers through the winter in the green house due to the mild winters here with a little extra heat added. When I have the seed I always grow pimento peppers as they are sweet, grow quickly and make lots of fruit. Unfortunately it takes some work to locate the seed and most seed companies put pimento on the labels of almost all varieties of peppers leading to getting seeds for all sorts of peppers that aren't pimentos. For those not familiar pimento are small bell pepper like fruit(often golf ball sized or slightly larger) but single or double lobbed unlike bells that are often three or four lobbed fruit.

      If you use a cold frame, some of these might grow right through the winter.
      Root crops can be mulched inside the cold frame, and dug up as needed.

    You nissed Japanese 'Komatsuna' from your list - a leafy vegetable much like spinach, but super easy to grow. It is closely related to Oil seed rape - looking identical except the leaves are lighter in colour and also edible ! Same flower as rape, same thin seed pods and it likes cooler climates, but will grow year round.

    • @coolwater55
      @coolwater55 Před 5 lety +1

      There are hundreds of gardening books from paper back to beautiful hard covers..in library, bookstores and on internet as well as CZcams.
      Most all round gArdening books will show a map with zones in addition to crop rotations and times. It is nice to have old fashioned book on hand as quick reference.
      One thing most master gardeners will share..not all zones are equal at times..sun shade walls city country..funny weather, valleys Rockies, soil all make a diffetrence.
      What this video and the gardening books share that is most helpful is the success rate is better if planting at certain times of the year according to zones.
      And experimenting is good..but sometimes loss of plants happen anyway.
      Good luck!

    • @StoneyAcresGardening
      @StoneyAcresGardening  Před 5 lety +1

      It really depends on the year. But I often don't water at all from around the first of December until the middle of February. You are really just storing them in a cold frame or hoop house for the winter, and as long as the soil was moist before the really cold weather settles in then you really don't need to water. Before November I'm watering at least once a week, unless it rains or snows, then I might leave the lids off the cold frame and let nature take care of it.

      It's really tough to diagnose from a distance. But my initial thoughts would be maybe not enough water, or they may have been planted too late in the year and it got too hot? Carrots, Turnips and Radishes are all cool season crops that would prefer to grow in temperatures under 80 degrees.

    I am in zone 4b according to the USDA website (southern MN). Do you think trying some of these plants now in August might be worth a try? Our really cold temps usually don’t hit until the end of December or into January, but we can be in the teens for temps as early as the end of October, just depends on the year.

    • @Just-Nikki
      @Just-Nikki Před 5 lety +2

      Karen Hiebert find out your first frost date and count backwards from there. Check days to maturity for whatever you’re wanting to plant and see if they are frost tolerant, frost hardy or not frost tolerant. You may have to buy starts for some things if you don’t have time to grow from seed ( broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts won’t have time from seed ) but leafy greens are fine and bok choy matures quickly, also spinach and lettuce,Swiss chard, kale, bok choy, sugar snap peas, etc. you have time to plant. Good luck!

    • @StoneyAcresGardening

      Sooner rather than later in my opinion. The sooner you get them thinned out the less damage you will do to the remaining plants.

    • @Just-Nikki
      @Just-Nikki Před 5 lety +1

      Cindy Smotherman cut them to thin so you don’t disrupt the roots. This is when you plant Brussels sprouts ( start them inside) diatomaceous earth is good for worms or you can use row covers. You can crush egg shells and put around the base of your greens, soft bodied pests can’t crawl through them without getting cut and dehydrated. Good luck!
