"Why did I make a home out of a dumpster? As a challenge to myself. And as a challenge to see if I could make a home that could go undetected in the city. People would just walk by. It would kinda be in this grey zone of legal housing, illegal housing. And to see if you could take such a small space, and make something that is actually livable."

For some, their home is their castle.
But for one Californian artist his home from home in New York is a dumpster.
STORYLINE:
It's hardly an award-winning location.
But for American artist Gregory Kloehn, this dumpster is a home from home.
The standard US trash container was converted into a house as a holiday home for Kloehn while visiting New York from his hometown of Oakland, California.
Kloehn's art is inspired by mixing grandeur with social irony and that's part of what inspired this creation.
"And I saw a dumpster. And I thought 'hey that's a perfect shaped house.' Looks like a little metal tent. Maybe I can convert that into a viable home." says Kloehn.
The dwelling now boasts all the comforts of a modern home.
"Er, I have kitchen complete with toaster oven, a sink and a single burner. A ten-thousand BTU burner. On the outside you can bolt on a barbeque. All that's powered by a five-gallon propane tank. There is a toilet in there. There is storage underneath all the benches. The benches serve as a sofa, and as a bed."
But it's hardly slumming it, as the dumpster comes complete with a working power-supply and even a mini-bar.
