  • Harrison Marshall, 28, lives in a renovated dumpster in London, United Kingdom. He paid $5,000 to build the home, and pays $62 a month to rent the dumpster base from a waste management company (although he hasn't been charged for it yet). The build began in December 2022 and took three weeks to complete. Harrison's goal is to save up enough money to one day purchase a home.
    Unlocked is a home tour series focused on how much people across the globe spend on their housing, what they get for the money and what they had to sacrifice to make it happen.

    Now that I know that the purpose of his dumpster project is to shed light on the housing crisis in London, I am much less bothered by this video. Praying that he is able to accomplish his goal of saving enough to purchase his own home while still being able to increase his net worth.

    I like this project a lot! The only thing that irks me so bad about the society we live in is that when "poverty/sustainability" is explored in the context of the art/architecture world - then there is funding and stipends and allotted land to use for free. But when it's real people not making ends meet, then no one cares. So even though Harrison has a noble goal here - it still remains a luxury project.

    • @stevestruthers6180
      @stevestruthers6180 Před 9 měsíci +4

      "But when it's real people not making ends meet, then no one cares." True, and in fact, if people try to bypass the system, then they are punished for it. If this wasn't an 'art' project, then it's guaranteed that the City of London would have tried to put a stop to it and prevent him from living there. The reason for this, naturally, is that politicians (and their rich backers) don't like it much when there isn't any money in anything that bypasses the system for them.

    Some economists have projected that both the U.S. and parts of Europe could slip into a recession for a portion of 2023. A global recession, defined as a contraction in annual global per capita income, is more rare because China and emerging markets often grow faster than more developed economies. Essentially the world economy is considered to be in recession if economic growth falls behind population growth.

    This requires much more thinking to really work. A great dream - but without a bathroom/kitchen or a real door to enter and exit - it could never work. What if some one had a disability? (which is often the case - when unable to afford rent) Not to mention - he's not even paying rent on the dumpster or for the lot. Great fun for a young dreamer - I guess - if that's your thing. But this solves nothing really. Even the cost for materials is too high. Would be far easier and cheaper to buy a used trailer (caravan as the brits say) and roll it onto the lot. No need for an out house and have a little kitchen as well.

    In the USA regulations prevent people from building tiny houses. Such regulations also make living in a structure without running water, sewage, and electricity illegal. It doesn't matter if you want to live that way.
    Over ten years ago a woman in Florida had her utilities turned off and she lived with candles for her lighting. She used a propane stove for cooking. I don't recall what she did for water. The city threatened to evict her from her own home because of the way she chose to live. I don't know her ultimate outcome.

    posh boy makes an art project to save money. The only way he's able to comfortably live that life is because he was able to spend over 4K setting the whole thing up in the first place and probably went to uni to learn those nice CAD skills too. 4k is something most people don't have. I hate to cry negativity on here but how is this a response to the cost of living crisis? You made yourself a nice little cheap home with the money and skills you gained, how does that help anything?

    Keep in mind, the hose used should be specifically for water, as most are made to remain flexible after years in the sun- and that is because there is a bit of lead in the lining as an ingredient, and it will leach into your drinking water. Super important

    Hilariously deluded 'protest' against the laws of economics, i.e. cities are the history of human struggle, of being close to jobs.
    So the reason for high rents etc is other people, people who can afford to pay more than you. That's why certain cultures instill in their kids the compelling belief they can be and should strive to be financially independent, be a doctor or lawyer or entrepreneur...
    THIS is the lazy whiner approach, by saying .
    Now anyone who works on a laptop can live anywhere. So this is purely a publicity stunt. Not sure who will sympathize tho.
    Honestly if you want to live in a city but don't have the money, just think of earlier generations of migrants who built new lives for their families living in conditions far far worse than this, ghettos, slums. And they didn't complain, they worked hard.
