    I'm still a noob with Bitwig (I have used FL Studio). I never used Ableton and instead I am very much loving the fact that Bitwig's Grid is similar to Reaktor. I'm probably going to be spending a lot of time in this channel gleaming insights.
    That being said, I was never too enthusiastic about sequencers inside my sequencer. I always felt like the out-of-box DAW sequencer and automation lanes should be able to take care of everything. I felt the same thing about sequencer based Reaktor modules when I first checked them out. However, there is something to be said about a sequencer hardwired to specific articulations -- sort of psychologically helps organize the sound design. Don't get me wrong, I think it is really cool that this can be done, it simply seems redundant outside of Tangerine-Dream-like ostinatos. Am I bonkers, out of touch, or thinking too much in the box?

    • @Centomila
      @Centomila Před 15 dny

      It make sense to me. I think this kind of sequencer are good for starting ideas or live improvisation.
      When I use external sequencer I usually send the midi OUT to another track and record the notes for further adjustments.

    • @brianbergmusic5288
      @brianbergmusic5288 Před 15 dny +1

      @@Centomila I've never used a DAW as a live improv tool outside of MIDI-sandboxing (maybe I'm behind in my terminology and we're thinking the same thing). I suppose it does make sense if you think of sequencers like the TB-303 or similar drummachine workflows.
      However, once I create a repeating pattern in the piano-roll, then I just repeat it x amount of times in the arrangement. Then I feel like I can use automation lanes with broad strokes till my heart's content. If I need to frankenstein a piece of that sequence to another synth, I simply copy-pasta and manage more automation lanes for that different part.
      I still think I might be missing something. I'm simply describing how I have a bizarre instinct to try to herd everything into the existing DAW's piano roll by default. One could say: *"you're going to stupendously repeat that pattern block anyways, so what's the problem?"* But I always find myself afraid that I need a fill ( *what-if* mode, and I often take advantage of a piano roll's flexibility to make a quick fill or variation).

    • @Centomila
      @Centomila Před 15 dny +2

      @@brianbergmusic5288We are on the same page. What I was trying to say is that I occasionally use this kind of tools to generate the first loop. After I use the Daw sequencer like you described.
      In the end, the important thing is having fun and making music. It doesn’t matter if it’s with a piano roll, a plug-in, a tracker or launching a cat on a MIDI keyboard :D

      I understand the sentiment, but let me put it another way: time is money; so is skill. Some folks lack the technical knowledge, and the time to put something together that is an aesthetic afterthought (but functionally performs the same job). Ableton did that for Ableton customers: they created a modular sequencer plug-in that is aesthetically complimentary for their product(s) and can be immediately used by even a braindead guitarist/bassist/drummer (which I can say since I do play guitar,).
      It's even less 'embarrassing' due to how Ableton does not have "The Grid" as Bitwig customers do. However, if they are not willing to switch to Bitwig, Ableton can run VSTs. That leaves these three alternative options (than purchasing DRIV) that immediately spring to my mind (I'm sure there are others):
      1.) Buy Reaktor (and learn how to use it).
      2.) Use VCV Rack (free), which I am not sure how well it can be automated since I have yet to tinker with the Euro-Crack simulation.
      3.) Create your own VST sequencer plug-in (which may require C/C++ skills unless you invest the time to learn a high level tool similar to today's version of SynthEdit).
      Personally, I've made some purchasing decisions that I've later regretted. Sometimes you also buy tools that makes previous tools either obsolete or redundant. On the other hand: there are also some plug-ins that may be functionally redundant on paper, but the creative process yields some results quicker than out-of-the-box thinking with your existing plugs (time is indeed money). One thing is indeed very clear: becoming "powerusers" with your existing tools is far better than buying every tool with limited time to pressure test each one, and OP is correct to defend such a thesis (which is also what this channel is all about).

      @Alckemy Před 15 dny +2

      That’s a little undermining. Polarity can do it in minutes, we can’t. There’s a lot of work and design that goes into these that you get to reap the benefit from thanks to creators.
      And if you are in fact that good at the grid I’d love to see you recreate it from scratch :)
