      Doesn't the flipper require replaced ball bearings in the detent?
      And, if you are attached to a certain spring-assisted, and the spring eventually ends up shot, can you just replace the spring? Gerber stopped servicing with their lifetime warranty.

    I'm super new to knives. I started getting into knives around may when the plague ;) was still at its height and alot of these terms I didn't know and it was never explained. Only recently I find myself understanding these terms just because of seeing the being used so much only recently I kind of figured out what detent was. Thanks for taking care of the noobies

    It took me the longest to get used to opening a CRK. I didn't like anything about manipulating one. I bought and sold 4 before I just made myself carry it and learn it. I kept on buying because I really liked the knives and quality of craftsmanship. Now it's no issue at all. So you really hit that point home when you said you will learn and adapt to what you like.

    Great discussion. I think you covered that pretty well. I have a ZT Hinderer 0561 that has always had a sticky detent, and if I fired it hard it would lock and I would have to use a pry to disengage the frame lock. ZT said they would gladly service or replace the frame, which was cool. But I decided to see if I coud remedy the problem before I sent it off. After trying the Oxi-gard trick which worked for about 5 openings, I decided to tear it down and play with the frame lock tension. After about 4 tries of bending the frame lock, I nailed it perfect. Also while I had the knife apart, I noticed the G10 scale did not perfectly follow the contour of the frame liner and there was almost 1/8" of G10 protruding past the thumb access curve in the frame liner. I carefully dressed the scale down with my Dremel which allowed for much better pressure application to close the knife. Worked great and didn't have to send my piece away.

    My shaman is a little snug, but nicely centered. I don't feel like touching it. It's still fairly easy to deploy (taught myself the 'flick too, thanks to your video). I think I need to practice the thumb push deployment a little more. Pretty easy to wheel out, but not as easy to do it with a fast flick.

    @thomaslanders6244 Před 3 lety

    I like a stiffer detent like on my manual MT Socom Elites. One of the reasons I can’t stand flippers is that the detent makes much more of a difference then a thumbstid knife for example. Too strong or weak makes a bad knife. There’s more to a good detent that makes for good flipping action but the detent plays a big part. Plus, opening a knife with a thumb stud is much more natural to me. I’ve only kept 7-8 really good flippers out of 60ish knives like the ZT 0801 Ti (best ZT IMO), FF WE made Crux, Dao, Buk etc

  • @MS-rx8it
    @MS-rx8it Před 3 lety

    I prefer I lighter detent. I don't really care if I could, in principle, fail a knife after defeating the detent (which is basically all knives). I just need it to open every time I try to open it, and this is easier for me with a "light" detent. The most common way for me to fail when I'm actually trying to open the blade is to dry fire (finger slips off of tab), and this can be kind of painful when the jimping is too aggressive (like slipping off of brand new slopers at the climbing gym).
    For me, WE has the best detents in the business. Reate tends to be a bit stiff out of the box, but break in quite nicely. Realistically, almost all manufacturers have the detent exactly where they want it to be (it's been this way for decades now). It's just a matter of whether or not you agree with their interpretation of "perfect".

    I bought the Tangram Progression when I was new to the hobby😶 Dirk Pinkerton did design a really nice knife there ... but the blade retention and detent are very weak, and then there's that abrasive jimping right underneath the flippertab🤬 So I was rather disappointed to begin with😩 But then I equipped it with a Kwik thumbstud and the knife suddenly turned out to be totally awesome😁 Yes, most of the time you can and will adjust to the knife, but then again, sometimes it's easier to adjust the knife itself😉

      I dont have control over the ads anymore. That's all on YTs end now unfortunately. In some vids you'll get 0 or maybe just 1 midroll, and in others you'll get lots. They recently took the tools away that allowed me and everyone else to alter midroll frequency and position.

    Odd experience. I had a CRKT CEO that was perfect. It is a very slim knife with thumb stud deployment. I lost it. The second one was almost impossible to deploy. I used a few Dremel bits (by hand) to polish the retention hole in the blade to make it work.

    The detent/action on my Socom Elite that I just received in the mail is insanely tough… I’m not sure what to do about it. Will loosening the pivot slightly help? I have a number of their OTFs so I know I don’t have weak thumbs lol my buddy’s Socom opens very easily and I can reverse flick it no problem. Mine is not even close to that.

    I would like to see knives broken down into light and heavy detents. I'm discovering that I prefer a lighter detent and it can be costly to try to figure out which ones have to heavy a detent - like the bareknuckle for example, which hurts my finger.
