Derecho Approaching Watertown SD - Tornado Siren Ambience - May 12/2022

- I filmed the first two clips before going inside as the derecho approached Watertown, South Dakota. The sirens heard faintly during clip one were sounding for a confirmed quasi-linear convective system (QLCS) tornado south of Watertown moving north. That tornado caused extensive damage in Castlewood.
Clip two was cut short as I had to get inside before the gas station staff closed and secured the doors. The man speaking in the last clip is one of several truck stop customers taking shelter from the storm. It's not me.
Our mobile mesonet truck (seen during clip two under the hotel sign) sampled a peak wind gust of 81 mph with a one-minute average wind speed of 60 mph as the leading edge of the derecho overtook the vehicle.

Exactly!! The last video I tried to get through was a 6 minute video on the SanJose Fire Department’s new hazmat truck. I couldn’t even get through it because of the annoying and distracting background music. Thanks for not adding music to this video.
I'll never forget the one we had in Iowa. It just went on and on. We had a young apricot tree and she endured it. Big and strong now and home to a woodpecker.
young trees tend to survive the winds better than larger mature trees because there isn't as much surface area for the winds to push against. The derecho that went through Iowa on 10 Aug 2020 wasn't as strong as others, but it certainly caused some damage to buildings. If I recall correctly, a grain elevator got demolished in Luther.

The Chicago area had 15 confirmed tornadoes that day. One being a strong EF-1 that hit the northern portion of the city of Chicago
Had a bad one back on 2003. Folks in Memphis called it hurricane Elvis. Lots damage there.
we had 120mph winds in our neighborhood and we lost almost every single one of our trees at my house except the skinny ones.. but they are growing!
You know it's a hell of a storm when day practically turns to night.

A long time ago a supercell was bearing down on us, and I was keeping an eye on it to see if the tornadic component looked like it might get close to us. Turns out the hook was beelining for our house. Since we had a good 15 minutes' head start, I recommended that we drive somewhere else. Turns out it was just a small funnel cloud that never dropped, but the storm itself blocked the sun so completely that it was basically pitch black. If you looked east, the sun was still shining brightly. West, pitch blackness. Never seen anything quite like it before or since.

Derechos do tend to be VERY fast-moving storms! A lot of times, as a derecho approaches, you will hear its winds BEFORE those winds reach you!

Very flat country lets storms move quicker and high altitude makes the clouds look lower. Fun combo for stormy weather.. except in winter. That sucks.

I find all nature crazyness beautiful... Tornadoes, lightning, volcanoes... Just such a pity that it can harm people and their property... If it would only happen out in the wild and somehow we would see it from footage without harm to people, that would be great huh?!

There's nothing like the ambiance that a tornado siren provides, nothing. I bring a dare home and immediately play a recording of our local warning. Really sets the mood!
It's literally like time standing still. When you hear one, seconds feel like an eternity.

This storm was a one-of-a-kind storm, totally crazy phenomenon. You can’t call it a tornado, you can’t call it a hurricane, just one crazy “out-of-this-world” weather phenomenon. It’s almost like a tsunami in the sky. The videos of this thing are amazing.
Straight line winds from 75 mph-107 mph were reported with this storm. A wall of dust was photographed approaching Sioux Falls. Several tractor-trailer combos were blown over along I-29 and one on US-81 north of Salem, SD. I know because I drove by it later that night. Arlington,SD had one of their grain silos collapse into itself and every town from Watertown to Salem was without power. Again I know this because I drove through them trying to get home that night after the storm had passed through Watertown. I took US-81 south out of Watertown and I counted 10 towns without power. Even the small towns local gas stations were without power except Salem, SD. Their Cenex on the south side had a backup generator! That little gas station was making a ton of money that night. Howard,SD city maintenance building had power and the fire station too. That was the only town other than than Cenex in Salem that I saw that had power or at least a backup generator. It was a wicked night. Trees uprooted, branches all over on the ground, fences down, roofs torn apart, RV Campers turned over and a lot of power poles snapped off or laid over on the highway. At of farmers lost silos and machine sheds or roofs from the sheds. I spent the night in Salem, then continued the next morning, I had seen debris on the ground all the way to Columbus, Nebraska!

@LionPride!! Maybe as a small child, but as I aged and educated myself on why not to fear them, I embraced nature’s fury. I love and am fascinated by all natural disasters. Severe thunderstorms usually aren’t classified as such, but more common than a true disaster. Safer, too!

Yeah we had one of these in Toronto, Ontario yesterday. Things got dark quickly, eerily quiet as the darkness set in and out of nowhere winds at around the 160kmh (100mph) mark and tons of uprooted trees, lost power, 6 deaths and property damage all over.
I was in Toronto too. That storm rolled in fast and it caused a lot of damage. Some street lights were still out today.

Peterborough here. That was the most insane storm I have, and ever will see. 4 days later and a good chunk of the city is still without power.
The strongest winds from this storm were reported in Kitchener Ontario, maxing at 131km/h. But all of Ontario from Windsor to Ottawa got hit hard.

We just had something like this in ontario canada yesterday. 130k gusts, sideways rain, hail the size of twoonies, and so far 5 dead from various incidents. Just insane it rolled out of nowhere and you were IN it. 40 minutes later it had passed but it was amazing just how much damage that thing did but the power stayed up here at least.
It originated off lake Huron, went over here not far from there as a moderate storm but certainly got more intense as it headed east.

Derecho's are scary as hell. I remember early Labor Day morning 1998 in Upstate NY, in Syracuse. A derecho no-one saw coming, formed off Lake Ontario then intensified when it reached land and the nonstop lightning, very loud thunder, hurricane force winds, and heavy downpours would not stop. It seem to go on forever and when it finally moved away about 1 hour later we went 4 and half days with no power. Over 200,000 customers without power and some up to 14 days overall. Sadly, there were 2 fatalities at The NY State Fairgrounds.
The labor day storm, .. what a nightmare that was, the thunder and wind shook the whole house, it scared the heck out of me and I thought for sure it was over for all of us, it was thanks to that storm I found a new kind of respect and passion for weather.
They are not as scary as hell.

I can relate 100 percent to this. Cedar Rapids, IA, was hit by 120 mph derecho winds for 25 minutes in 2020. Wiped out 70 percent of our tree canopy and we didn't have power in a city of 150,000 for 2 weeks or more in most places.

I was in that Iowa derecho and it was insane. Explains my question, “why are all of the trees in Iowa shorter than everywhere else in the country”? Now I know why!!
We just got hit with a derecho here in Ontario Canada. Never experienced anything like it in my life, and i probably never will again. Windspeeds up to 130km/hr (80mph). It's been four days and there's still no power in parts of Ontario. Mine came on sunday night (storm was Saturday afternoon). 10 deaths reported so far.
Australian here, have seen my fair share of wild weather, but there is something truly majestic albeit terrifying about an approaching weather front of that magnitude. Fantastic footage. Thanks.
In my city in Michigan, they play the boy who cried wolf with the sirens. Now when you hear them, instead of taking shelter, you go outside to see if there is really anything out there.
Once my family's area got a siren, we all brought stuff to the basement. Nothing happened thankfully, but i do wonder if there was aderecho or a tornado warning

Derechos are scary as hell. I was in the 2011 one that swept through Virginia. The roll cloud after I got off work? Never seen anything like it before or since. I got home, turned on the TV and saw the largest bow echo I've ever seen, then the derecho came through and the power was out for 3 days. My sister was 7 months pregnant at the time with her second child and the temperature was in the 100s with the heat index.

I was there too, we we’re lucky being on a grid with the local hospital only lost power for 2 days rather than a week with other Dominion power residents.
I was in that same storm only I was in WV. I watched it tear the roof off the apartments that were across from me. It’s bizarre to see that happen when you’re home alone. I was pretty lucky to be without power for about 18 hours. I knew people that would be without power for 2 weeks in the heat wave after it. Glad you made it out ok!
I remember that Derecho as well, i was driving home away from the storm yet still the storm was moving towards me despite the fact that i was driving away from it, never seen a storm move that fast before.

Day to night in less than 5 minutes! I was in my truck watching this storm move in. I wasn't brave enough to be outside though!

We had a monster just like this come across the Mississippi River into Southern Illinois yesterday. It destroyed the awning at a gas station (that had just undergone 6 months of renovations) and broke and uprooted hundreds of trees
Wow! I lived through one of these that came through Virginia a few years ago. It was almost hypnotic watching those powerful winds roll in like that.
That may be the same one that destroyed West Virginia. The radar looked like it became a derecho at the Ohio River, and perfectly engulfed the entire state.
Derechos are way scarier than tornadoes to me. At least you can get out of a tornado's way

We had 141 mph winds here in iowa aug 10 2020! My mother was out of power for a month! Over 11 billion in damage to our state! Like a f2 tornado for 45 minutes and covered 725 square miles!

I remember when this Derecho hit in Ontario (GTA).
We got the warning and went out to secure our patio stuff. Wife headed into the house and I happened to look to the west of us and saw it. It was like a wall of water approaching and I'm standing there saying "Wow!". Wife's yelling at me to get in and I finally realized that there's a reason for taking cover. Got inside and closed the door as it swept by. Was just like a curtain of rain. Pretty cool. And fortunately, we didn't get any damage around our house. Just one heck of a show.
Ottawa had this storm on Saturday afternoon. Since then, there's lots of damages especially with downed trees, property damages, downed wired poles, and no power from the F3 tornado

Nice video. Where I am from Memphis we had Hurricane Elvis in 2003. One of the barges clocked the winds at 108mph. Was my first night at FedEx World Hub and when we got off weather went downhill fast, blew me off my feet walking to the car, lol. I live in Miami, FL now and still work for FedEx.
Watching the skies swarm and blacken is utterly primal. It’s one of the only moments where i feel truly filled with awe.
Nature's version of "shock and awe" - scary and fascinating at the same time....

Had one in NE OK right over my house. Huge downdraft with incredible rain and 100 mph winds. It's an amazing sight when a huge storm collapses like that.

Google derecho. It's not a collapsing thing it's a system consisting of wide wide straight line perhaps 100 miles wide that might go for 400 miles more.

It's really enjoyable all up until the point where it levels your house. I catch myself in Ohio saying that I miss the strong storms of Illinois at times, but then I remember all the straight line wind damage I had to deal with all the time.
I remembered being in one these storms back 2012.

I remember visiting Watertown SD for a family Reunion like 10 years ago. This storm later hit my hometown in Shakopee MN and we had 88 MPH Winds.

When deadly storms hit in my area it makes me happy and gives me a rush, dang i feel bad now because I lost several family members in the katrina, but it just amazes me how mother earth pays us back equally due to how great of a job we do in taking care of her.
I've been there. In summer, so close to the Arctic Circle, when weather happens, temperature swings are dramatic.

Back around 2012, I witnessed the derecho in West Virginia. Standing on my back porch, it was windy and just beginning to rain.
Suddenly, I heard what sounded like dozens of shotguns firing every second. A wave of wind was hitting and the trees on the mountain I was facing just began snapping in two.
It sounded like an invisible Jolly Green Giant was jogging through the woods. Most eerie sound I've ever heard.
No clue what it was until after. Power was out everywhere, but this little section of town we'd just moved 2 miles to for over a week.
And the heat that followed for about a solid week was absolutely deadly. They had to bring in generators to the local high school gym and set up cooling stations for the elderly.
If our power had been cut, we'd have certainly had to go. I could barely stand an entire cigarette outside during that heat wave.
Tremendous amount of energy was pushing that derecho.
Never want to see another one.
I dunno why this kind of ambiance calms me down. It’s like everytime a storm comes in and the sirens go off it’s just a nice excuse to stop everything you’re doing and just go outside to watch and wait.
The storm is crazy, but the gas price though. Sadly I long live for the good ol days of 4.19 per gallon.
