Hang N Bake, The Magic Of Campfire Baking.

  • Most of the time baking in the outdoors involves a reflective oven or a dutch oven due to food being prepared by being surrounded by heat and or hot air. Normally, anything hung over a campfire is cooked from the bottom. This is Macs magic method of baking over a campfire!

    Terrific video! Never, and I mean never, call yourself an idiot! If I'm ever stranded on a desert island you are my number one pick. My Uncle Carl made baked beans in a cast-iron dutch oven and he would burry them in the ground surrounded with hardwood coals. When I went through cub scout leadership training I just couldnt believe the things that could be made in a dutch oven. Its endless! Oh, a deserted island would be like a vacation for me. LOL.       Great video I've found that mixing corn meal in an open container helps to incorporate air into the mix. Makes the cornbread "fluffier". Bottle mixed is not only lumpier but denser as well.

      Nothing like Dutch Oven peach cobbler on a fire. Set it in the fire and cover the top with coals ..... awesomeness for sure. I'm with you Ossie....David is a genius.

    I LOVE your channel. Since several years ago, you turned me on to bushcrafting. Never mind that I'm too old to do this stuff, you can't imagine the pleasure I derive from watching all your episodes. As a woman, I scream with laughter at what you guys do in the woods for cooking. So I have to tell you a story. My 91 year old husband was in WWII in Italy. He managed to liberate one egg, which he cooked over a small fire in a horse pasture. The egg got away from him and dropped to the ground. He scooped it up and ate it. Whatever you guys do in the wild, which would kill most normal humans, you can't beat this story. Wives: better you don't know...

My grandfather was in the army during WW2 and he often told stories about how cold it was and he actually kept ice cream in his footlocker!     i struck gold at one of my local thrift stores and found one of those crock pot baking inserts in perfect condition. i thought it was a good size for a general purpose camping pot.

    I have baked muffins and even lasagna over an open fire lol. I have used double pots as well for baking over an open fire, and as well as alcohol stoves as well. It is always fun.     Way cool. I've used a dutch oven with an old trivet and a cake pan but my wife is the real cook, she makes everything from scratch, that's why I'm a fat man now.

    Man o Man, you just open my eyes some more. You can make custards, the famous french Creme Burilee, by just adding water in the outer pot. They call that a water bath when i was in cooking school. The water bath will even out the cooking temp all the way around. Now with this idea I can go about steaming foods. Like alot of dishes. O My My. Thank you Dave

      Dave, the "water bath" is designed to create an even temperature on custards, creme bruliee and liquid desserts. The liquid will firm up into custard evenly. Usually you put dessert mixture in a glass container or porcelain and set it right on the water. When i steam foods you usually keep it off the water, so set it on some sort of holder, I usually use a empty soup can then i set the plate of food on the can and trap the steam from escaping.       One more thing , "water bath" will not work on baking cakes or breads. It will create too much moisture for dry recipies

    Found the exact same Crock Pot Bread n' Cake Bake insert at the Salvation Army yesterday for 50 cents.I wouldn't have known what I was looking at if it wasn't for your video. I replaced the knob with a metal one from a spare lid. I'm going to try it out this weekend. Thanks for the tutorial!

    To avoid lumps, I found that when adding Powdered stuff to water, it's best to warm the water slightly first, works every time.

And I’m glad you leave the some time boo boo’s in because people need to know things ain’t perfect and you are gonna have that some time, so rather than just give up and throw in the towel at the first problem, try to figure out a remedy, how to fix it.     When I was coming up, ya had cornbread&beans for breakfast, for lunch, cornbread with sliced tomatoes & onions, for dinner we had bacon with cornbread, onions, fried tatters, and for dessert, we sliced open cornbread and pored honey or maple syrup on it_____ hay I like cornbread, ok?

    Great explanation as always. Agreed on a backyard fire pit being a great thing. Fire bowls just don't cut it when you're stuck at the house and you want to smell some smoke.
    Baking happens all the time at my house, but I'll be keeping an eye out for campfire baking tools now.

    You made me think. If you could get one cook pot to fit in another and maybe a computer power supply wire screen for the bottom for the spacer. Drill some holes in the lid of the inner pot and pry up with a screw driver and you would have vents. oh yeah. we had cornbread last night so I found it in a plastic baggie in the kitchen and I am eating a big cold square now. I am roughing it with no honey sauce ha ha

    This is a great video David! Refreshing to see an instructional video that uses repurposed items. Seems now a day everyone is doing videos on the latest and greatest new camping products. Videos like this one really encourages me that I can do fun cooking in the woods without paying a fortune.

      +Reallybigmonkey1 David, I managed to find an ice bucket and a crock pot baker. Got to get the ice bucket to come apart. The rubber is hard as a rock and stuck on pretty good. Definitely gonna try this out when the weather improves, probably late spring.

    I use tin cans mostly to do what you've done here...but the nice thing about your set up is the durability of your cook ware and no rust...lol. I was thoroughly entertained with this entire video! And a learned a trick about the surround "sound" fire method...that is a great idea.

      +Man Land (Midnight121) Sounds cool man but yes, rust is an issue. I used to make stuff all the time out of cans but got sick of having to remake rusted sets. That trick with the wood ring is amazing. It heats up the air all around your pot but doesnt super heat the bottom. Thanks for watching Brother

    Those small packages of biscuit, muffin, cornbread mixes are perfect for carrying in a backpack, along with water. I've made this using a small home-made alcohol stove, using two tiny pans, one over the other, and it comes out just like yours, bottom crust slightly browned. Good little meal.

    Here in Chile we do all our baking in a dutch oven inside our wood stove and it works great. I have also done quite a bit over the fire as well. Jim

    Heyyyyy David Pearson,
    I loved your video and also I would like to say thank you for leaving in the things that go wrong. That's facts of life and you show how things really go sometimes and how to overcome some obstacles.
    Now, I realize this video was made a year ago but try again armed with this information.
    The crock pot bread and cake baker, my mom used to have one. This is designed with the vents on top to introduce moisture into whatever you're baking. It's not dry air. The crock pot has water in the bottom.
    So try adding water between the pans next time. The bottom won't burn and it locks in moisture. Just try it and let me know how it works out.

    I have used the lid to my charcoal grill to cover some foods over my fires, to make it like an oven. Keep all that heat from escaping. I have a big old aluminum lid that would maybe work great for this too. Always enjoy watching your videos!

    I just watched this episode after viewing the later one where you demonstrate your own version of a Dutch Oven. Both systems work well and you demonstrate two different fire systems that will work, too. It's good to remember mentors and I enjoyed watching you re-enact what they taught and what you added to it from your own experiences.

    Dave, being a southern boy I love cornbread and pinto beans. I have not used a mix before but it looks good and would be great on the trail. I have baked in a dutch oven but they are really heavy. i have a couple of Al. pots of different sizes i will try. Great to see you back making videos. I missed you.

    In the early 1970’s my grand father took a large coffee can used a church key ( can opener) to punch a few holes around the bottom of the can. On top he made a handle out of a coat hanger and cut a pie pan for a lid. He then made a rebar hanger so the can would hang over the camp fire. He then wrapped potatoes in foil and put them in the can. When the fire was lit and you were waiting for the wood to go to coals for cooking the potatoes were already baking by the time the rest of dinner was done there was always potatoes baked to perfection he really had it down to a science.

    Oh man.. that looked great. I do the same thing with my MSR pot, a wire rack and a small stainless steel bowl when I make bannock over the fire. love making bannock... now I want some cornbread. lol Thanks for the video brother.

    Guess what, I actually found a Rival Cake and Bake exactly like yours today at a antique shop. I can't wait to try it out like your video demonstration shows. I still can't believe I found it. Had I not seen this video, I wouldn't have recognized the value in it. I paid $7.00 for it and it has a little chrome rack inside made by Rival. Thanks again for opening my eyes up to these things. It's Awesome, looks brand new. 👍👍😎🇺🇸

      That's great you found one! Nothing beats them for baking. Part of the secret to how they work is the vented lid. Protect that gold coating and enjoy using it!!

    You were so careful placing all the big logs around the edges, then, throw all the kindling in😄any-old-way! Ha ha. If i can suggest, put a little of the liquid in a small container where you can mix the dry packet in with the little liquid and work out the lumps before adding the rest of the liquid. This is how we do cornstarch when you mix it with juice to make fruit sauce over the heat. Great film! Great explaination of the heat around as you bake. Your cake turned out fantastic!!!

    Backyard baking with Dave!!!!! You knocked it out of the park again. I was thinking a small Dutch Oven could be used as well, using a lid. They are able to surround their contents with heat as well. Cornbread, beans and honey, now you're talken. Crisco would be the ticket for me. Nice job!!!!

      Reallybigmonkey1 , I was thinking more about how to adapt your cornbread cooking style to my hunting trip application. I travel to my place by truck and winter camp close to it in a ground tent. Mountain House meals get a little old so I am thinking about changing things up. I burn a lot of energy during a hunt so something like cornbread might work. Trucking in my Dutch Oven to cook something like that wouldn’t be a problem for my application.
      I watched a guy I follow on YT make, what I call “pigs in a blanket” using Martha White biscuit mix. He used a Trangia 27 cooking kit. Alcohol Trangia burner for heat in what turned out to be frying instead of baking. He mixed the water to the mix in the plastic bag the MW biscuit mix comes in. It wasn’t a fail but he said it wasn’t his best work and will learn from the experience. That is what it’s all about, learning as we go. Thank you for your informative videos.

    Great idea! And if we can't find a vented lid, we could drill holes in it. I think I'd like to let the flames die down before baking, though. Can't wait to try this!

    We use to go to the same site year after year to the same lake for some great fishing. 5Km hike in and paddle across the lake to our cap site. It was all devils club but we cleared it out and created a campsite big enough for 15 people. Devils club kept the bears out. I was the cook every year. We had access to loads of already shattered slate. We created a stone underground oven that could bake 2 loaves at a time. We dug down under the fire pit and built a very solid slate oven. Then built a chimney. Around the chimney one side was a warmer drying area that would direct heat without smoke. one side a BBQ for grilling and another a 4 pot stove top. The front was the fire hearth and stone wall with seating for 10 to keep warm. Behind the benches was a granite bluff that blocked any winds. You just lifted the one square of slate to access the oven under the back of the fireplace. As a cook it was great controlling the heat and not having flames or smoke at your knees or in your face while cooking. As far as I know there is still a group that goes up and uses the camp every year.

    Thanks for new ideas, haven't seen the insert for crockpot in decades. I've subbed a tin can, with tin foil doubled with paper towel around over the top tied on. Take tin foil formed in a ring about 1 inch, set in the bottom of crock pot. Put can in crock pot. Add about one inch water in the bottom. The lid on crockpot should been off set just a little most of the time, depends on type of crock pot .

    I was cruising thru my local Indoor flea market and what did my eyes behold but the exact same crock pot bread n bake pan in new condition with the lid still in the plastic. There in a metal rack in side that stands about 17inch off the bottom.
    can't wait to try it out.
