  • Air to Air Exchanger (HRV or ERV) and Humidifier Summer Setting. In this video I briefly go over what the air to air exchanger and humidifier settings should be during the summer along with some basic maintenance on the air to air exchanger. How to clean the filters inside the exchanger box and the inlet screen outside. I did not mention this in the video but the humidifier also has a water panel in it which is sort of like a filter that needs to be replaced once a year if you use your humidifier often during the winter.

    @3:15 your advise it perfect for the humidifier featured in this video (Aprilaire 700), it should be mentioned though that this model is not a bypass humidifier so simply turning down/off the humidistat is adequate... however... Most humidifiers I encounter are bypass humidifiers. On a bypass humidifier we also want to close the bypass duct during the summer season if you operate AC in addition to turning down the humidistat. Failure to close the bypass duct could contribute to a high temp split and freezing of the evaporator coil. Humidifiers like this one (Aprilaire 700) have a built in fan, humidifiers without a built in fan will likely have a bypass duct that should be closed/blocked during AC usage. Great advise though as usual, thanks!

    Great videos! Curious about this one though. Don’t ERVs exchange some of the moisture w the outgoing exhausted air. Turning them off seems to defeat the point of installing them to pump fresh air into the house. Turning off an HRV makes sense to reduce humidity levels in the home.

    • @WordofAdviceTV
      @WordofAdviceTV  Před 3 lety +1

      Most houses are just fine without it. If a house has a stale musty smell to it, then it may benefit from an air to air exchanger. I talk a little bit more about that in the first few minutes of this videos: czcams.com/video/vLksdXMFY4g/video.html
      The ducts are not always connected or routed to the same place. It varies from house to house but if you search "air to air exchanger ducts" on google images, you will see some nice diagrams where it shows how some of them are routed. It's nice to be able to see it in a cutaway type of view.

    As a hvac tech we fix them alot. Hear the same excuses from homeowners. Yes it has filters you have to change/clean, no its not maintenance free. Also there is NO REASON to touch your humidifer at all during the summer. The way they are wired to the control board of your furance it absolutely can not run during the AC season unless you put your heat on. Only thing you touch is to close off the bypass damper to summer if you have that style. The pads need replaced at min every two years

    Hey Jay!!! My compressor had finally locked up and of course it happened right before the worst heat wave Seattle has ever had. Its 101 right now and tomorrow will be 10-15 higher! Couple questions. Can I install a new 3 ton condenser using a 2.5 ton coil? Also, instead of brazing the copper lines when reinstalling the condenser is it ok to crimp? What do you recommend? Thanks!

    • @jaythompson222
      @jaythompson222 Před 3 lety

      3 ton condenser on a 2.5 ton coil could work as it's usually ok to be +/- 0.5 ton on the coil, does your air handler produce enough cfm for 3 tons though? Airflow is critical and with a smaller coil freezing will be inevitable if airflow is lacking. You need 1200 cfm for 3 tons, don't forget to factor static pressure also... Crimping or brazing are both acceptable is done correctly, depends on your experience/comfort level. also when you say locked up, have you tried a hard start kit/capacitor? for less than $100 they REALLY increase the torque at the rotor during start up, might get another season or two out of it if the hard start cap gets it going again. May be worth trying...

    Edit: Sorry, I have a bad sense of humor.
    I pre-burn those motors out to let the magic smoke out after installation while all the windows are still open. This way the owner who forgets to change filters will never have to worry about them burning out and smoking up the house in winter when everything is closed up.
    The filters stay clean forever without cleaning once the magic smoke has been let out of the motors.
    When will those stupid manufacturers learn to make units without the magic smoke, all bottled up? Pre-releasing it adds an hour to labor bill, homeowners pay the price.

      It sure does seem like we are headed in the opposite direction... Some of these new units are loaded with way too many un-needed trinkets.

    You're wrong. This is terrible advice. You need to air exchanger to run all year to remove CO2. In my office with the window and door closed I go from 500 ppm of CO2 to 900 CO2 in about 15 minutes. At 900 ppm of CO2 I'm tired. I feel like I need a nap. I can't mentally work at the capacity I need to.
