  • Sometimes you come across something so unique and wonderful that it melts the world around you. HYLICS is a one-in-a-million experience that not only became an instant favorite, but helped me through a terrible time in my life. So let's talk about it, yeah?

    You may notice that a mouse icon is present in many of the clips used for the video. This is actually a subtle nod to the fact that I'm a dumbass and also that I thought it would be really funny to not fix that.

    You know people often hate modern art because they often seek a meaning behind it and they often fail and feel very frustrated by that.
    But a game like Hylics where everything seems to be chaotic and chill and unstable, somehow I think it is a great way to teach people to appreciate modern art : don't think to much just feel and chill
    Great video btw

      People hate modern art because it's not real,you can't just stick a banana onto the wall with scotch tape and call it art,art requires actual skill and talent to produce,hylics is art because it takes literal years to create a game,especially one that involves stop motion with clay figures,anyone can paint a couple single colored lines onto a canvas and call it an art piece,not everyone can create a game like hylics,which is what makes it art...

    • @Mike14264
      @Mike14264 Před rokem +1

      Yeah... Like, folks can try to find a meaning behind some things if they want, but folks can also revel in its randomness and just go with the flow.

    • @vsnake8663
      @vsnake8663 Před rokem

      @@mrslasher1064 To be honest, I sort of disagree. I think something can be counted as art if it invokes discussion, so the banana scotch-taped to the wall counts as art because it makes people talk about whether or not it counts as art. Like a self-fulfilling prophecy, I guess.

    I didn't think it before but a world of colourful blobs and being able to seamlessly swap in and out of two different body types is pretty neat and comforting.

    Funny that you mentioned how Hylics 1 felt more like an art exhibit, actually!
    Years before Hylics 2 came out I visited an art gallery in Savannah, Georgia and it was featured in an exhibit alongside some other games (Beglitched, A documentary game about Henry James Thoreau, and a PSVR game whose name escapes me). It was really awesome to see the potential for games as an artistic medium recognized!

    I remember watching Nitrorad doing a review on this game and the sequel. It reminded me so much of Eastern Mind: Lost Souls of Tong-Nou mixed with The Neverhood. Since playing them, it took me out of reality like those games. The Hylics games are true escapism.

    this video describes the exact feel that i have every time that i play these games in a way i could never articulate. i absolutely ADORE them, and even after im done with it for now, they will hold a very special place in my heart even when im much older. ive played hylics five times now, and im going to start my third playthrough of hylics 2 soon, but these feelings never go away. no matter how familiar i get with these games, they have this way of making me feel so deeply connected to them unlike almost anything else out there.
    also no hylics character is cishet and no one can change my mind lol

    With regards to the meaning behind the term Hylics, it's also notable that the trio you mention, of body/mind/soul, in greek hylic/psychic/pneumatic, have really deep meanings in gnosticism, an ancient christian cult, where hylic beings are fundamentally base, and unable to ascend beyond their pale earthly shell, without interest in tapping into the deeper divine truths of our reality. They spend all their time focussed on the small things of every day life, like food, sleep, or creature comforts. I kinda love the idea of being Hylic, and I think there's something of that present in the game. The lives of people in the society, like the Juice farmers or the Coffee vendor, are small and simple, but beautiful and appreciated. Gibby wants to reshape the world, but Pongorma is accustomed to this tiny planet. Even the post-post-...-post apocalypse vibe reflects this. The world was once grand and special and divine, and now it is brought low. We love it anyways.
    I really appreciate the personal layer to this review, it profoundly illustrates your connection in a way that I think is highly appropriate for this important game.

    Really happy this showed up in my recommended videos; this is a fantastic analysis of what makes Hylics special, and I love the pacing and the storytelling that puts us in your shoes as you played. I think given the atmosphere of the games, it's important context and really makes the video stand apart from other analyses that fixate on the "whoaaaaa it's like,, drugs dude."
    I distinctly remember when I first discovered Hylics in 2018, I was completely captured by the off-kilter yet harmonious colors, the somehow indifferent melancholy of the world, the soothing (except when it isn't) guitar. I'd play the ruins music for hours as I worked long shifts in a darkroom, shrouded in shadow and a dim amber light, stewing in thoughts of mortality and my place in the world and then storing them in my recollection of those physical spaces. I don't know if that makes sense, but it's like I can keep it all there, the thoughts, the questions, any undercurrent of dread played off with chill vibes and the affect of a surfer, all within the archipelago and as matter-of-fact as the growing of insects or trimming of fronds.

    omg! so like I (kinda) saw this video yesterday! I saw the thumbnail (pretty!! colours!!!) and title (cool!) and went "oh this we be good!" and then even before the intro I heard "dorohedoro" and went "OH!! THIS IS GOING TO BE GOOD!!!" so I told myself I could do if while I do my bio hw! Thing is I'm a bad procrastinator so the whole day I was telling myself "come on Hylics time!" (I've never played but I love content about it!) I ended up zoning out listening to a video about parkour and did my hw to that but I'm really glad I ended up saving it!!
    I ended up being able to listen while I do dishes, dance around the kitchen/living room, and play with my dogs at like 12 AM through an old speaker I stole from my parents! I loved it!
    I'm done my dishes now so I'm typing this!
    I have to check out the RPGs you listed! I played yume nikki a while ago but now I want (crave!!!) *more* and I'm looking for inspo because I wanna join next years dream diary game jam but I little coding experience and no RPG maker experience so even playing them helps!!
    I never knew it was 1 guy working on the first one! That's so impressive! and I love the clips of the guys!
    I also really liked how you phased things! It felt really spoken from the heart and pretty cool to be honest!
    And OMG I was trying to get my dog to play with her new toy when I heard you mention it being kind of queer I WHIPPED my head around and stood around like I was bigfoot! I'm mostly closeted nonbinary and I never thought about it like that! I love the designs and style!
    I didn't know about the MoonAge lobectomy EP so I have to check it out thanks for that!
    I also loved!! how you talked about your experience with clay and stop motion! I used to love making little clay charms when I was little and I've been meaning to jump back into it! Thxs for the push!
    I definitely wanna play it even more now!
    I think this is one of my favorite videos ever! It was so well done and I can tell a lot of work and heart went into it! :]
    Its 1:08 am now so i'm probably going to check out more videos tomorrow (today?) or (MOST LIKELY!) pass out to em! Goodnight! I wish the best for you and your art!

    Hylics as a queer text is such a cool take. So many dudes out there making the same drab paint-by-numbers media analysis tryna find the """meaning""" behind art. I think you and Jacob Geller are making really cool shit, combining your personal connection to games with a more curious form of analysis. Seriously, thank you for making this. I wish I could make something this good.

    Y'know, originally, the main character for Hylics 2 would've been a lady Wayne named Decres, but the idea was somewhat scrapped. And yet, she became a fan favorite, and some folks like to theorize about how Decres is Wayne (or at least a Wayne) after they transitioned. It's pretty neat stuff!

    Most of the video was entertaining, But to put it politely the ending where you were interjecting a lot of subjective symbolism into the character designs being Queer was a little offputting.
    Intersectionality is a pretty divisive topic, Something I would withhold from putting in a video about crazy putty people, Regardless you still made a lot of good observations and were very well-spoken about it which I liked.

    I was all on board and thought this was a really well thought out video until 23:55. Please don't bring identity politics into your videos like this if you care at all about growing your channel. This will almost immediately divide your viewing audience and, whether intentionally or not, encourages an echo chamber that will quickly resemble only the worst of a certain shit-hole known as reddit.
    As far as your actual statement regarding the game being "queer" goes, you're seeing what you want to see from a very abstract world. It's no different than describing the shapes of clouds or what a few ink blot slides look like. There are plenty of games new and old that handle character creation or character sex that way, just look at Dark Souls 2 for example. You select your sex during character creation, but you can access a coffin that upon lying in it for long enough will give you a sex change.
    Now, let me try the same rhetoric here that you had used during your video, but using Dark Souls 2 instead of Hylics 2: Let's see, well, FromSoft is a Japanese company so they're already off to a bad start due to not being privy to western politics, there are only 2 genders to select and the only way to change your gender after character creation is to lie down within a coffin for a certain amount of time. Is this particular coffin symbolic for FromSoft's prejudice against transgender people!? By implying that they all belong in a coffin!?
    See just how easy it is? The more abstract the premise, the more easily and believably you can bend and twist things into something that they simply are not.

    • @KyllingThyme
      @KyllingThyme Před 2 lety

      I agree that she was reaching very hard with the "queer" take and that it was pure projection, but you're being way too hysterical about this. Bringing up the LGBTQ+ isn't immediately "identity politics", and if merely mentioning it makes you feel like the audience will be "divided" or alienated, maybe you just need to think about why that is. There's no reason to be so terrified of the big scary gay people. They exist. They will eventually be talked about. People shouldn't censor themselves to appease a wider audience.

    • @kalamies.
      @kalamies. Před rokem +11

      You do realize they're not saying Hylics is itself about being queer? They're saying they found comfort in the universe being so chill about everything being so different. It's not political to say ' I find this piece of media comforting because it reminds me of my identity ' it's a personal thing and you need to shut up and let people feel.
