I wonder how much of this is autobiographical considering Lucas almost died in the exact same way.
In a way yes but he wasn’t racing when he got in the crash, the other car was speeding and hit him while he was pulling into his driveway. He did have a love of hot rods and car racing culture of the time. It was during his recovery that he got into film and the found the love of directing.
The drag race scene is a heart-pumping thrill ride that leaves us on the edge of our seat, and the film's nostalgic soundtrack takes we back to a simpler time. It's no wonder why this movie has stood the test of time and remains a beloved favorite among film enthusiasts.

Fast and Furious glorified dangerous street racing, American Graffitti didn't. In fact the moral was 60's street cruisin was balls out fun but street racing was dangerous and stupid.
