My family visited Kalapana in the early 1970's. I remember a small bay with the famous black sand beach, and how the palm trees grew right down onto the beach. The bay had a reef offshore, and one evening my brothers and I surfed the waves there (which were gentle and easy to ride). Next morning the waves were smaller and inconsistent, and I remember one guy out surfing at the far end of the bay, close to shore. He was wearing a mask and snorkel on his head. In between the rare few waves, he would slip off his board and snorkel around in the bay. Then when a small wave finally came, he'd get back onto his board and ride the wave.
I remember going to Kalapana with my grandparents (Grandma was born there), my parents, and my siblings and have a blast!! Such wonderful childhood memories. I was so sad to see Kalapana disappear😪
I'm from Ireland. Like many thousands with the interest watched Kilauea in 2018 live on CZcams. But I came to understand the unique losses brought by lava to local people who are affected. As many of you say here in your coping and understanding . Earth gives, and takes away. But I am still trying to wrap my head around it. I suppose it haunts me on a common human level. But I guess as long as the people live with the memories the places live on.
Thank you for this. I grew up in Kalapana area and this brings back such memory's. This has rare footage of the Kalapana drainpipe too. I miss those days. I even seen my uncles old work truck.
I had to revisit this I just love the music. The music is just what you could listen to all day. I can’t understand the words but I don’t have to. I can feel the passion in the voices. Thank you
I grew up in Honolulu but I always had a fond and heartfelt love for the area of Kalapana, why, I don't know, who cares.!?!?! All I know is that when the lava flow came down those many years ago, and as I watched on the news each night, my heart broke for the beautiful area, the beautiful people, and for the beautiful district of Puna...Till this very day my heart is filled with love for this gem of the pacific...!!! Aloha
